Hi all,
I have always liked the chrome mirrors on Audi S cars, so when I bought my GTI I was interested to see if this could be done. Having seen chrome mirrors on the Golf R, I knew it could look good but was slightly concerned that it may stick out as the car doesn't have any other chrome accents like the R does.
I contacted my main dealer to get a quote for the OEM Golf R mirror caps. I was quoted £173 supply and fit (£137 supply only). I looked online and found the same part at:
www.vwmotorparts.com
for £120. Free delivery was very fast (2 days).
The part itself is ABS plastic but the paint gives it a metallic look (matt aluminium colour). I fit the mirror caps myself (without removing the mirror glass) using the following tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvuVEuUclwI.
It took around 10-15 minutes but was very straight forward.
I have included several photos below of the part itself and before / after photos. Apologies for the quantity but I couldn't find many photos before deciding to purchase so hopefully it will help someone in the future..!

Interesting.
It actually looks quite good and works well with that colour of car.
Most R owners hate the brushed metal effect mirror caps and a lot either wrap them or swap them out for black or carbon.
I'm always surprised there hasn't been a bit of a swap shop for mirror caps set up on a forum!
The brushed metal caps are very colour dependant on what they work with best. They look their worst on a red or Limestone car IMO but can look quite good on darker metallic cars or white.
Good effort on a ) doing the mod and b ) providing a good write up with decent photos.

I've always thought those were the worst thing about the R....the very expensive optional carbon ones are much nicer... Or just wrap the ones you have.

My thoughts exactly

Looks good to me. Top job fella!

It was one feature I wasn't keen on when ordering the R so went for gloss black which I think looks much nicer

The black mirror caps look perfect on the FL R, with the absence of the brushed metal trim on the lower front bumper the extra gloss black adds to the car's appearance. Again, this can be colour sensitive.
The one thing I will say is that whenever I clipped the garage door frame in my R (very tight fit, 1.5cm either side) the brushed metal caps didn't mark unlike painted ones. :lipsrsealed:
Time to update the sig pic Craig

Yeah I can't remember how I did the sig pic  . Will look into changing 👍

Mirrors, what mirror covers? I'm can't see anything other than the most non labour intensive lawn I have ever seen.
-
d1time, I think the chrome mirror caps look good on your Carbon Grey GTI.
I bought my Motorsport alloys for my Polo GTI from VWMotorparts. I found their customer service was excellent; they responded to my e-mail queries by return and wheels were delivered two days after I placed the order.
-
I wouldn't have done it. Not a fan of cars pretending to be something they aren't. I'd have gone gloss black - ala the Clubsport - if really wanting to keep it OEM+ looking.
-
I like it, its subtle but personalizes your car.
-
It is a good job we are all different, gloss black for me on a GTI i'm afraid

I'm in the same boat if I was going to change.
-
Well I like it. Nice contrast against the dark grey paint, which wouldn't be as obvious with black caps.
Black caps for lighter/brighter colours, chrome caps for any colour apart from silver. IMHO.

Sorry, not for me. I may wrap them down the line but am OK with contrast for now. I actually fancy I may even spray them lapis. Car fads go full circle, like fashion.
-
Sorry they don't do it for me, originals look much better IMHO.
-
I still have my hydro dipped carbon fiber look mirror covers in the boot of mine. They have been there for a few months now keeping my wheel spacers company. I must get around to fitting them some day

You could've fitted one in the time taken to type that!

I walk slowly and type fast

I was not keen ont he chrome ones myself either. So I swapped the chrome mirror caps on my Golf R for the optional Carbon mirror caps when I ordered it. The carbon mirror caps are awesome, especially when the catch the sunlight.
-
Expensive to retrofit those carbon mirror caps.

-
I think they are something like 400 quid if you order them from the configurator with the car... Do look lovely though.
-
Would be cheaper to just get the originals wrapped.
-
I had mine cf wrapped for £60 and was very pleased with them. Having seen a genuine set of VW ones on an R though, the real ones were much better but not worth around £550 to retrofit. I think I'll fit a set of gloss black ones soon, a dealer on ebay will supply a pair of oem ones painted in the colour of my choice for £72 + p&p which seems reasonable and I'd also still have my red ones should I want to go back to standard.
As for the point of this thread, I like what the OP has done, they look really good in combination with the colour of the car.
-
My carbon mirror caps were part of a deal I had haggled on my Golf R. So I guess mine were cheaper.
-
Been meaning to get mine done in Red to match the badges, not sure it will look right though.
Anyone done something similar? :undecided:

I would look like one of those beats up! imo
What colour is your (GTI PP I presume?) gloss black is always a good OEM look.

O yeah

I have a White GTI with Performance Pack (red badges), not keen on Gloss black to be honest, I was going to get them wrapped in matt silver/matt chrome.

So Golf R caps then. Good idea to hawk around R owners that dislike them. Me I'm happy with mine. They identify the car against 'run of the mill golfs'
-
Personally, absolutely love mine on my white R. I always liked the look of the brushed chrome caps when they first came out on the AUDI RS.

I actually don't mind them on white Rs, they also make sense on the estate given they match the roof rails

Possibly the most tacky and pointless mod, but each to their own, whatever makes you happy!
