Title: Calling Mk 7.5 Golf R owners, wherever you may be.
Post by: CHB100 on 13 July 2017, 22:49
There seems to be an incredible lack of us on this forum, I don't remember seeing any other posters since I got mine in mid May.
Done 1600 miles and am looking for any excuse to drive it,especially on long runs. Achieved 32mpg on Cornwall trip that included some very high speeds.
The most satisfying car to own. Without the in your face look at me compromises of a super car.

Saw my first 7.5 R this week, suppose there aren't that many around yet. Well not near me anyway. All the 7.5's i've seen so far have been either GTD's or boggo SE's and GT's.

You should have dropped in on the way down to Kernow, I've yet to see a FL R in the flesh.

There are quite a few popping up over on VWROC now. Probably a few on golfmk7.com too, but I've not dropped in on that forum for a very long time. Most of the FL R's on here are still awaiting production (or ordering!) it seems.
VWROC seems a much more buoyant place to discuss all things R related. The rest of us Front Drivers are too busy scrabbling for traction with our inferior cars to be very buoyant.  :lipsrsealed:

Odd that, there are many non GTI only posters on here, it started as such but has evolved to include all.

The title as such is merely a pointer to all the Marks of Golf based on the original GTI, l / We have owned during their production lifetimes GTI,s  Mk's 1, 2, 4,5, 6, 7 and now both 7 and 7.5 R

Answer applies also to Jim's glib comment above

As a new user, if I wouldn't join this forum if I was buying or owned an R. The title actual says Golf GTI Forum. So maybe the name needs to change to Performance Golfs? Just a thought.

Wow! small world...you have some lovely roads to choose from, north towards Bibury and Stow and south towards Bath...love that area.
I lived in London for many years and one of my favourite journeys when coming 'home' to Ciren was to leave the m4 at Theale then take the a329 / a417, lovely drive...now Im reminiscing
Enjoy your R, you lucky fella.

I think the point being made is that you are more likely to find other R owners on an R specific forum. Like it or not, this is a GTI site and as such is going to attract fewer R owners. Why not just interact on both and get the best from both worlds? Clearly all are welcome here and great to see and hear about experiences with other Golf models, not just performance ones and even other marques but your original complaint is hardly a valid one.

Don't recall it being a complaint 'friend', odd that you should take it as one? Just an observation based on the fact there are owners of 7 R's on this forum. I'm well aware of other forums, I joined the 'R" Mk6 forum in 2010 when I had a GTI. Point being I would have expected to see more on here than basically my own. That's all.

Title: Re: Calling Mk 7.5 Golf R owners, wherever you may be.
Post by: Booth11 on 14 July 2017, 16:23
Some time ago, in the earlier days of the mk7 R (the original and best), there were a fair few R owners on this forum, who had made the jump from GTI/GTDs and so were already members of this forum, some long-termers.  At one stage there was more mk7  R talk than there was GTI talk, and, imo, at that point the balance had tipped too far towards the R and needed, for the greater good of this forum, to swing back in favour of the GTI/GTD.  I can't speak for others but that was the primary reason I decided to participate in VW Rock! even though I didnt like that forum very much at that time.  That and the fact that there is a great deal of R specific information and chat to be had on the R specific forum.  I expect some others moved over for similar reasons. In short GTI owners were getting bored and pissed off with all the R talk, and they had a point, and now the GTI is the main talk of this forum, as it should be.    As this forum is now back weighted towards GTI/GTD owners I expect many mk7 FL buyers/owners make their way directly to the logical place for R talk - VWROC, some have never owned a GTI or GTD so no reason to stop here.  Some of us who came from a GTI background are still here because we love the place and the GTI still.

As I recall VWROC was created as a Scirocco R forum mainly (but not only). and specially around 2010 as alternative to the iconic R forum for

mainly (but not only) Golfs, which sold in far greater numbers.

I stand to be corrected.

Had a MK7 GTI PP originally but changed to a Mk7 R. I dip my toes in both forums as both have generic and model specific  posts which interest/inform me  and help to pass the time as a Golf owner.

VWROC in its current form came into being 2013 when it changed from the original R forum which was for both Golf R and Scirocco R owners.  Although VWROC still caters for both types of R it was never conceived as primarily a Scirocco forum, the Golf R has the much greater share. Scirocco Central is where you'll find many Scirocco R owners.  If you are interested in some of VWROC's history, read the article in this link.

You know mate when I was hard up I bought a lovely 1100 Golf mk1 from an elderly lady and loved wringing it's neck out, so satisfying having to anticipate the lack of power and keep up with xr2/3s.

In short GTI owners were getting bored and pissed off with all the R talk...
I missed all that. When I joined this forum in 2010, the GTI drivers seemed pissed off with all the GTD talk. Some forum members were real dicks. So I lost interest. That all seems to have settled down now.

I'm guessing that some GTI drivers didn't like the fact that the Golf R was the top dog.

Over on an Audi A3/S3 forum talk seems to be dominated by S3 drivers. So it is good that there is another forum for Golf R drivers.

 Funny how one accepts the consumption when it gives so much pleasure. Although not in the 22

club, reckon 28 long term. Averaged 32 Cornwall and back. Well pleased with that considering blowing away almost everything Except a GT-R !!

Look forward to your thoughts on the 7speed 310 CraigW, and don't worry about the fuel needle, it's barely visible, I now know why

Could be worse. As our other car is an Audi A3 I enjoy going onto an Audi forum and poking the Audi S3 bears. Some of those guys really do have a God complex.

I actually find Golf R drivers are fairly reasonable. S3 drivers believe dogmatically that they are driving the best car. While Golf R driver just know they actually are driving the best car :smug:

Averaged 32 Cornwall and back.
I said last week on an Audi forum that the S3 would average 30mpg + or - 3. One S3 driver was very adamant that his trip computer said his S3 was averaging 40mpg. I pointed out that most S3/R drivers were lucky to get 400 miles per tank = 33mpg. And that the trip computer sometimes greatly overestimates the actual fuel consumption. He didn't sound like a happy bunny

Nothing personal but I have and many others I suspect, have-an aversion to Audi drivers and therefore the brand. Shame as they are quality motors.
When we purchased a Mk 4 GTI we test drove a 1.8T and were told by the salesman who can only be described as flash, red braces , italien shoes so you could here him coming from space, his name escapes us but was suitable and he still makes us smile.
Anyway the final nail in the Audi coffin was him pointing at the grill and stating "The VW is fine but it doesn't have the 4 rings"
This was at Listers Worcester if anybody else had the pleasure of his salesmanship.

At that time I hankered after an S3, so definitely not prejudiced then, no it was the shear arrogance of the set up, the like of which was reserved for BMW at that time c1999.

I have relatives/friends with Audi's, but in my experience it's more image on the estate than a passion for driving. As with a lot of car ownership to be fair, but have witnessed some incredibly arrogent driving/ tailgaiting / flashing lights etc especially on M ways with Audi drivers.
No, I love the subtlety of the VW/owners that delivers the goods without the horns  Respect

I can assure you that was not us in our A3 1.6L TDI.

I guess Audi, BMW and Mercedes attract a certain type of driver who think they own the road. Though it is not fair to think all Audi drivers behave this way.

My wife's friend's husband hates VW Golfs for some strange reason. :undecided:

I really fancied an S1, but ... I know it's a generalisation and not associated with run of the mill models.

I thought it was a commonly held view, it certainly is around these parts.
