Title: MK7.5 infotainment - Traffic button
Post by: Excession_OCP on 09 July 2017, 20:01
Hi all,

So, after three weeks of owning my lovely new GTD and just having got stuck on the A1 I noticed that there is no 'Traffic' button on the infotainment screen any more! This I found quite annoying as I couldn't see how long the jam was. Does anyone know if there is a way to replicate the old traffic report functionality?

Just found this on the Discover navigation spec:

"It comes with 3-years’ Car Net ‘Guide and Inform’, providing online access to such information as traffic, fuel pricing, parking space availability, weather and news feeds; and includes online navigation software updates, enabling you to download the latest map data."

Does this have to be activated?

You have to get a code online (using your vin), once activated it requires a data connection via your phone (or 4G dongle thingy if you have one). You set the phone up as a wireless hotspot and the car connects to it for live data reports.

Two different types of traffic data.. Either tmc or carnet.  Tmc comes over fm radio and is free and works on every golf mk7...carnet is subscription based, mib2 onwards and needs a WiFi hot-spot for the car to access the Vw data system.

Tmc is not very good in the UK. Carnet is provided to Vw by Tom Tom.

Ah yes makes sense now. Need to get it registered and will use my work iPhone as the hotspot.

Have you considered using Android Auto, if you're an Android user of course.

I've signed up for the Waze beta, so can now run Waze through Android Auto and hence on the infotainment screen.

If you didn't know, Waze is owned by Google and uses community based reporting to generate a lot of it's data.

It provides up to date traffic information, including traffic speed and estimated time in traffic.

It'll also alert you to temporary and permanent speed cameras, as well as other incidents, like obstacles in the road etc. As long as you're on a fairly major road the alerts are very timely.
