Title: Bits on your new 7.5?
Post by: Mk1Macca on 30 June 2017, 21:55
Silly questions for anyone else that's got a new 7.5...

The rear seat isofix points, did you get plastic covers for them? My last GTD had covers, as did the 1.6 TDi that we had. The new GTi doesn't.

Did you get a plastic boot liner and safety kit (2 x high vis, first aid kit, triangle), or, as I suspect, we just got lucky and the dealer put them in by accident?

I had same questions after picking up mine a couple of months ago.

There is no isofix plastic covers on the rear seats in the 7.5, at least on UK version. They have painted the bars red in the GTI though. (Nice touch).

I found the accessories pack was depending on what dealer I used. My last 2 golfs haven't had them.

That's odd!
The plastic covers on the isofix points are definitely there on any MK7 I've been in.
I sat into a couple of 7.5's in showrooms and the first thing I noticed when opening the drivers door were the large and obvious exposed metal bolts on the inner door frame that hold on the door mirror. Those bolts are also covered by a black plastic cover on the MK7.
Sounds like it's yet more cheeky cost shaving by VW.

Wasn't there something else they had previously chopped on latter Mk7's?

Some other sort of plastic cover... was it rear seat hinges or something?

Anyway it was something which I thought "must remember to remove those from my Mk7 when it goes back to reuse".... and then forgot.

Yeah a bit of plastic to cover the rear seat mount point.

Might have been me. It's the first thing I noticed when I picked up my May 2016 GTD in comparison to the outgoing September 2013 GTD. Deffo cost cutting by VW following the Dieselgate debacle.

That's the missing cover I mentioned above! I thought it looked crap when I sat into a new MK7.5, so it sounds like they dropped that cover quite a while ago? My August 2015 R has that cover over those bolts so it must have been deleted in 2016 at some point... You'd wonder what the hell they save by deleting little things like that. Pennies per car surely? I guess it all adds up if you're shifting thousands of them.

Exactly that, when you're producing 7 digit volume of cars and can cost cut things like that it adds up real fast, allows the money to be spent elsewhere, it just depends on what they decide that elsewhere to be.

they could at least color code the screws. or use black ones as the silver just makes it look cheap...

Looks like ye olde touch up stick to me, remove one each side at a time, paint/lacquer leaving centre to be re-tightened paint/lacquer centres. Just done 2

Could well be that some VW employee came up with the idea to remove the covers to save the company money. Most car companies run suggestion schemes for their employees and depending on how much money the company saves the person that came up with the idea may well get a free car out of it.

Quite common though for as time progresses with a design of car, things change - usually to do with cutting costs and nothing to do with making things better.

I remember having two identical cars consecutively in the past and the second one having some serious cost cuttings - things like rear aircon vents, the rear armrest and rear electric windows deleted....

I take it that there was a plastic cover over it?

Won't be long now before vw offer just the primered car and you have to paint it yourself.  Maybe with the mk8?

I helped a friend build an S3 Lotus 7, as available without taxes in kit form. Now there's an idea VW, Ikea have done it for years!
The VW Mk 8 IKEA with very few instructions, that most blokes will ignore anyway.

When we collected the car, the dealer also gave us a VW branded box, which had a presentation tray inside with the spare key, a nice VW keyring (not a crummy dealer type), and underneath a VW travel cup. I was pretty chuffed to get this as the last time I bought new, I had to fight to get a cuppa at hand over!

I got something similar but it had various money off vouchers things, a business card holder, a battery pack charger, place for the spare key, a key ring and a pen. It was about 6"x10" in size and I thought it was chocolates until I opened it weeks afterwards.

I got coment on this video on my Mk 7.5, that is not like the Mk7..

""Thanks for filming this!  It seems that VW has removed (verschlimmbessert) some covers underneath the wheel arch. As compared to VFL Mk7 GTI there are clear differences. Typical VW cost cutting policy that should be forbidden by law....""

Can someone confirm? :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9nN7LymAzQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9nN7LymAzQ)

And on this video i got a coment..

""Thanks for filming. You can clearly see that the Mk7.5 GTI has a particle filter whereas the Mk7.0 GTI did not....  Clearly visible from 55s to 58s in the video.""

Assume the covers being referred to would be the wheel arch liner? Can't really comment on the differences (if any) between the wheel arch liner on the mk7 and mk7.5 Golf as I don't have either. However, your video clearly shows the mk7.5 does have a wheel arch liner that will protect the underside of the wing / fender from general road dirt and winter salt spray, so it should do the job it's intended to do.

As for the comment made by the person watching your video that cost cutting should be forbidden by law; pretty much all companies will have an objective of ongoing cost management and profit maximisation. If VW can reduce costs without materially adversely affecting the quality, safety or performance of the end product, why wouldn't they? They won't be the only company that does this.
