Title: GAP Insurance
Post by: Boulton on 29 June 2017, 06:32
I'm picking up my new GTI today and will take out GAP insurance. The prices the dealer have quoted me when I ordered the car are unsurprisingly dearer than the quotes I have had online.

Has anyone used companies such as shortfall and total loss gap before?

VW GAP insurance is very expensive; I suspect this is due to them applying a large profit mark up to the net prices their supplying insurer have provided them with. Most of the forum members who have GAP cover are unlikely to have bought VW's GAP product, because of it's high cost - some may have it if they've managed to negotiate it a a 'freebee' when they bought their car.

I used ALA for my GAP cover. Other GAP insurers that get mentioned quite regularly are GAP Insurance 123 and Direct GAP. You can usually find discount codes for GAP insurers' products if you do an internet search. ALA have a long standing discount code VP10, which will give you a 10% discount, but I see they are currently giving a discount of 11% using code VCLOUDALA11.

Some of the GAP insurers will also offer a price promise guarantee and will undercut competitor prices, so worth doing a bit of research and you'll find a price that significantly undercuts VW's price for the cover.

I have Vehicle Replacement Plus also through ALA and it's valid for four years and it cost me around £220.

ALA are very good and anyone else I have heard of using them was also ver pleased with there service.

Don't use VW's offerings unless you like throwing money away.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to call ALA now they do a price match where they'll beat a like for like quite from a competitor by 20% of the difference.

I was quoted £599 for VW's GAP Insurance. I asked them to remove it off the invoice when I made the deal. I had made enquiries with ALA and a few other companies and the price was working out about £250.

The day I collected my car, they salesman asked if I'd taken out GAP insurance. I said I could source it for around £250 and was going to purchase it today. I jokingly said that if you can do the VW GAP insurance for the same price, I'd take it and guess what? They did! So now I've got the VW 4 years back to invoice GAP insurance for £250. Well happy

If the dealer can slash the VW price of GAP from £599 to £250 it just goes to show how much commission mark up they're loading onto their supplying insurer's net price. Worryingly, some customers will pay these inflated VW prices.

Personally, I'd always go for new car replacement GAP cover, so if the worst does happen, you can get a new replacement car with the claim money from your motor insurance and GAP insurance at the time of loss, rather than just get what you paid for it.

Yes - I would agree - always go for 'New care Replacement' policy as otherwise you are constrained by what you paid for the car and wont be able to get something better in the event of a total loss. In fact, if prices have risen you will not even be able to replace the old car so would need your basic insurance, Gap Insurance plus cash on the top!

Try PISTON12 discount code for ALA.  Money10 usually works too.

I have ALA Vehicle Replacement Plus policy for reasons mentioned above.

I too went with Ala last year when I bought the GTI, went for Vehicle Replacement Plus policy for the same reasons already described above. Ala price matched Gap123 and gave a further 12% off with code PISTON12.

When the stealer asked how much it was, he laughed and didn't pester me any more.

Has anyone gone for the tyre replacement for accidental damage to up to five tyres over the 3 years?

Another one I just found is via a cashback site - free to register using my link https://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/phope (https://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/phope)

https://www.topcashback.co.uk/gap-cover-insurance/

They've just quoted £188 for the same cover as my Audi A4 quotes, but with a further £25.75 cashback to me as well making it a net £163

It's too late for my car but I may well have a new car on the way so I will read up a bit more about it.

I went with ALA who beat the cheapest quote. £192 for 4 years cover instead of £350 for 3 years cover which is what VW was trying to sell me. Don't let VW put you off. The salesmen was trying to tell me that you can't get 4 year GAP insurance and he's seen instances where these companies don't pay out.

Anyway, I absolutely love the car. Just brilliant. Well worth the wait!

I wonder if the salesman would've been able to substantiate his statement regarding non-payment of claim by other GAP insurers? Highly unlikely, and undoubtably the standard sales tactic to try and get the customer to buy the expensive VW GAP product.

Congratulations on the new car; hope you'll put some pictures up

Gap 123 also refunded me the balance of the premium when I sold my car before it expired - top service!

Will get the pictures up soon just waiting for some sun! Can't wait to see what the white silver looks like when the weathers a bit better.

Anyone debating at whether to get the velour trim. Get it! Everyone who's got in it so far first thing they comment on are the seats.

Got charged £650 for 3 years cover as part of the overall package, I couldn't be bothered to tell them that that's a joke, it was a way of them thinking they got one up on me because I constantly haggled down the overall price.

Cancelled the cover as soon as I got home and went with my previous provider Gap123 for better cover, half the price and 5 yrs worth of cover.

We went with DirectGap this time, as others have said less than half the price quoted by dealer for a far better cover imho

The dealers make more money from the add ons than the cars. Finance, GAP, paint protection, service packs etc.
