Title: Postcode entry on basic nav.
Post by: Don76 on 14 June 2017, 08:38
I've just taken delivery of my 7.5 GTD.
Loving it so far, but one thing is annoying me.

How do I enter a full length postcode on the nav?

On the keyboard page you get when entering a new destination, you tap the PTCD button to switch to postcode entry. There's also a search icon in the top right that switches between POI entry, Address entry or Online.

Surprised the salesman didn't show explain this when you picked it up - mine did.

Probably wouldn't have mattered anyway, I collected mine from the dealer and they didn't show me anything.

Does this work on the Nav Pro version because I can't find a postcode option on my 16 Gti

Try this ....

Get to the screen where you enter a new destination
Select Town
At the Town entry screen, you should see a PTCD button

Then depending on the age of the unit you need to select letters input (as opposed to numbers) - key in first one or two letters, then select numeric input and add the numbers, then back to letters to add the space, then back to  numbers to add them and finally select letters to complete the full UK postcode.... simple eh?

NOT!

In Germany the postcodes are numbers so that's why you have to change to letters first.

And that's why I leave it to my co-pilot to do!

Yes but I'm in UK and this is a UK spec car - so just another irritation...

It's been like it for the whole life of the Mk7, if they were going to change it, they would have by now.

I suspect that different language packs for the text is easy, changing input logic per country whilst possible is too fussy.

If you look at this link, you will see that the UK is one of only a *tiny* handful of places that uses non-numeric postal codes:

Do you honestly think that VW are the only ones who do this? It's a German car not a British car so they aren't going to bespoke software just for one market.

You get used to it very quickly, I get the whole UK spec bit but it is no different that the volume knob on the wrong side of the unit.

At least you don't have to worry about a manual handbrake lever being in the wrong place.

The number of cars where on a RHD model its virtually inaccessible these days is mental.

Really, I've never had that, which cars?

I don't know about inaccessible, but the handbrake on my vRS is quite close to the passenger seat. My brother has fat legs and he grumbles every time I reach for the handbrake when he's sat in the front.

I've hardly used the VW Satnav, just use the Android Auto and Google maps.

With googles voice activation its so ridiculously easy especially as Googles voice recognition is so good.

I've had my car for nearly 2 years now and today for the first time ever we 100% relied upon the sat nav. Managed to enter the postcode after a bit of bother, followed the directions to the letter until it exclaimed "you have reached your destination". Had we f**k. So sat nav, where is the pub? Asked a local pedestrian who 1 fortunately knew the place and 2 said "you're a long way off". Thankfully my OH's iphone knew what it was talking about and we got there okay in the end.....

Sounds like more of an issue with the post code of the pub rather than the navigation. Have you ever updated the map data base?

Post code was correct but the landlord did say others have had the same problem so I don't think it is to do with not having updated the system. Just annoying that the first time I've relaxed and let the tech do the work and it got it wrong  Must say the system on the iphone is excellent and has got us out of trouble on a number of occasions most notably when we had to negotiate our way through Lille.

Postcodes... yes they aren't precise, especially in rural areas they can be quite a large area, but you have nothing else to go for unless you are using google nav, which in turn can be inaccurate because pubs and businesses are self added, sometimes in totally the wrong place!

As for handbrakes, I can't remember, I had a series of random hire cars of different makes a while back and most of them had the bizarre handbrake issue. Citreon? Kia? I can't remember now.

I have no idea what other marques do as I have only owned VW's. If they can build it with the steering wheel, controls and instruments on the other side a small software tweak would not seem to be too much to ask...
