Hi all
First of all apologies if this is in the wrong area/ mods feel free to move.
I am looking for some advice, I normally read and dont post that often however I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction or offer advice.
I started to notice what can only be described as scores/lines on my brake discs (rear only) after the car had done around 5kmiles, when the car was in getting its first service around 9k miles I voiced my concern to the dealer and asked them to check check the discs, the adviced I recieved was "nothin to note or worry about" with the dealer describing these lines/scores as normal. My car has now completed 12.5k miles and the back discs look like they are about to disintegrate.
IMO I think I need new discs, however surely the life expectancy of rear discs should exeed 12k miles, in particular as the car has had an easy life (normally driven with the kids in the back).
Has anyone else had issues with rear brakes, any and all opinions will be taken onboard, I plan to visit my dealer in the next few days.
Meanwhile I will try and attach some pictures of the early stages and current stages as mentioned above.
Opinions and recommendations would be much appreciated.

Photos would certainly help for people to give advice, if they are really that bad your quote 'about to disintegrate' I'd be knocking at the dealer's door now and wouldn't risk driving about with kids in the back.
I may have been lucky over the years but have never ever had to have discs replaced and as you say 12k miles is nothing.

Hi bushido :smiley: Rear disc wear at low miles has been mentioned on here quite a few times, recently too, so it might be worth doing a search for previous posts on the subject. Ultimately though you have it so if it were me I'd seek a second opinion from another dealer however I think from the sound of it you may be getting some new discs and pads soon.
Also, don't be shy, nothing better than a few details of your model with the odd picture. Only enthusiasts on here :laugh:

On a quiet road take it up to around 60mph (cough) and stand on the brakes a few times to clear the crap off them. The rear brakes are hardly used under normal driving as the front ones are so good, so needs to be done as and when they start looking rough.

Or take it to a quiet road/large car park and go from 20-0 a few times using just the electronic handbrake. I'm not sure how safe this is but it should clear them up.

As a previous poster has said this has been discussed on here recently. The rear discs and pads have already been replaced on my 2014 GTD (40000 miles) Strangely the front discs and pads are fine. Previous cars I have had the fronts have always been replaced before the rear. Didn't even try a complaint to the dealer as the service you get is shocking. You certainly have a case IMO as your mileage is a lot lower than mine.

Rear brakes get used much more than you'd expect during normal driving due to the ESP interfering. I used to get a lot of brake dust on the rear wheels on my old Passat, even on long motorway trips. As an experiment, I did one 250 mile trip with the ESP turned off. The rear wheels were still spotlessly clean after that journey.

Live with them, VW won't do anything about it.
When they are done change them yourself to aftermarket ones which are much less prone to these problems!

Went to my local dealer today, after some deliberation its been agreed they will change them gratis, happy days for me.

Don't do this, the result with doing that will be instant rear wheel lock up. It is instant on at 20mph, believe me I have tried.

Thats because its an emergency braking function if the foot brake fails..

Mines are also gone at 26k the problem with rear brakes is they don't get used enough so they corrode then when the brakes are used the rust ends up scoring the discs.
Hard use of the brakes often is best.

Nope, it will not lock them up at 20mph, at that speed it uses the hydraulic brakes (all 4). Only at very low speeds will it engage the EPB (as in apply rear parking brake).
