 could anyone tell me if they have had a head gasket blow on them, my 2.0 1999 gti started to give me sh!te mpg (9-14) round town and i noticed a strong oily smell when the car was running and stationary, then i noticed blacky smoke with water coming out of the exhaust, i looked in the oil cap and the white gunk was there! how common is this problem as the bloke down the dealer sounded suprised, could there be an underlying problem? or is it just one of those things?
how much does it usually cost from an independant garage not the main dealer and i do not own chealsea fc or microsoft!!!
please help

alot of the mk4 range suffer from a severe case of condensation in the oil cap area due to the nature of all the plastic engine covers, try checkin it after a 20mile run and see what it is like then, or remove the platic covers and etra filler neck and replace your oil cap directly onto the head, then have a run and see what its like?? ive had this on mine, 1st time i saw it i thought ohh fook, then read up it was a common prob, removed me plastics and put cap straight on head and all was well.
if your usig alot of oil/water or they are mixing that is a good indication of head gasket probs... tis hard to try and diagnose without having a look/test in the flesh!!

if it was condensation would the exhaust be pissing water and the mpg be sh!te?
