Title: Manual gear selection problem
Post by: MKVIIDP66 on 18 May 2017, 11:00
My wife took delivery of her 2nd mk7 gti and from day 1 both of us experienced an intermitent problem selecting reverse and 1st gear. Last week the dealer had the car for a day but could not replicate the problem. They adjusted the gearbox in line with a VW problem notification for reverse gear jumping out(which is not a problem we have). Since then over the last few days we still experience the reverse selection problem but only from cold starts. Previous Mk7 gti (2014 model) gearbox was as sweet as a nut. Any others with the same problem?

If you google "difficulty selecting 1st and reverse" you'll see its a common mechanical problem with all sorts of cars.

People try all sorts of things to resolve it. Looks like on older golfs the answer might be replacing the DMF.

Thanks for taking the time Fred to reply. The car is only 3 months old and has done only 1200 miles and we noticed the problem from day 1- surely the DMF is not worn out.

There are loads of suggestions as to why it might be behaving like this, but you are right - 1200 miles shouldn't be seeing low oil levels, worn clutch, worn linkage, knackered DMF etc

I could be wrong though, but I thought I'd read of some DMF problems from new somewhere.... but not recently, back when the Mk7 was new maybe?

The only other thing I can remember from owning old cars might be clutch cable adjustment? First and reverse have the highest tendancy to need full clutch actuation, the others you can almost change up with no clutch at all!

Thanks again Fred. Let's see what happens when it goes back to the dealer having monitored it for a week or so.

Surprises me that you've not had more help here... I thought there were a lot of quite mechanically minded folks here and not just an old duffer like me to help...
