Hi everyone. First thread after lurking for a while. I ordered a new GTI last week and have found a lot of answers to my questions already answered on this board so thanks for that!
My car will have the standard Discover Navigation head unit (couldn't really justify the jump to the pro). I was having a good play about with it in the showroom and plugged my phone in to test out the Apple CarPlay. Seems a nice addition and something I'll definitely use, but I was wondering if I'll end up fed up of plugging my phone in everytime I get in the car, especially for short journeys.
Wireless CarPlay is on the horizon with iOS already supporting it and I've read that VW have also developed the technology.
As the new Discover nav has Bluetooth and wireless connectivity already, do you think this is something that could be added in future via a software update?

This is whet you want http://www.d-docks.com

That looks interesting thanks. Will certainly help with my OCD lol.

VW have already demonstrated Wireless CarPlay at one of the European car shows recently, however apparently Apple have not yet approved the introduction of Wireless CarPlay. The D-Dock is a great idea and substitute for wireless connection at the moment but what use does one have for it if Apple introduce Wireless Carplay with the upcoming new iPhones. With wireless connection for both Android and IOS you have a least a USB port free.

It can't be that far a away because if I go into the CarPlay settings on my iPhone there is a wireless connection option already there with what looks like guidance on how to pair wirelessly using the voice activation button on the steering wheel.
Like you, I had read VW were ready to demonstrate it which it why I hope it will be something that can be added with a software update further down the line. If the discover unit has Bluetooth and wifi surely it has the hardware already. Be annoying if 6 months down the line they bring another updated head unit out.
I just think it would be so much easier and better to get in your car, start the ignition and then the screen be already paired without have to plug/unplug anything. Exactly like the way Bluetooth phones currently connect.

I think it also depends on what you want Carplay for. Before I checked out the standard Discover I thought Carplay would be a good addition for music and calls but the standard unit is excellent for both. I'd like to see what the Apple Maps navigation looks like but apart from that I can't see what I would use it for, at least in it's current wired state. Maybe if it was wireless it might be a little more tempting.

Yeah I see your point. It doesn't offer a massive upgrade over the standard system other than a different interface.
I think I'd use it most for music streaming services (Spotify, Deezer etc) which could be good over wireless if done correctly I'd imagine.

The main problem with wireless CarPlay is the amount of battery it uses on the phone because all it does is project the screen of your when using the apps so it will also need wireless charging. Hopefully Apple will join the 21st century later this year.

I think there is zero chance of vw offering wireless as an upgrade (even at cost). The feature will be in the mib4 for new cars probably my19.

Probably a more likely scenario.
I'm used to getting free software updates on my phone, iPad etc. Would be nice if you got them on your car infotainment too. I know they do updates but in my experience they're only ever bug fixes.
CarPlay is still relatively new so will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next couple of years.

Yes car manufacturers are rubbish at this stuff.
They believe that you buy a new Xbox to get a new game.

The latest iOS update does appear to accommodate the wireless function but it doesn't work for me (using the voice activation) and I can't see it working with my existing set up.
That said although CarPlay is a bit limited they are paying attention to it as each iOS update lately does seem to add something. The "up next" in the music app was a recent add which works well.
I'm hopeful more apps will be added soon.

I presume the discover screen is just acting as an additional display really. So future updates will be handled by the iOS on the phone, meaning new features etc will work regardless of how old the car is.
Be nice if you could physically see messages on the display if the car is stationary rather than having Siri read them. They could possibly use the phones movement sensors to determine that and add it in an update.

On my Galaxy S7 using Android Auto, it not only shows you the message in text form (as your driving), but can read it to you as well. Not sure that's good for safety though

Funny thing is that my old RNS510 would read out my text messages and let me digtate the reply without touching the phone when I had a Nokia 1520 Windows phone.
