Title: Rear Brake Disc Wear
Post by: GtiDad on 02 May 2017, 17:08
Just put my 2 year old Gti DSG in for its second service and been told the rear pads and discs are 90% worn! It's only done 11,844 miles since new. I'm not a heavy braker and no warning light is on. Anyone else had this issue with low mileage?

If I'm honest the fronts always go first on all my previous cars? The rears normally need replacing as they seem to get scored/corroded....

My wife's R had a similar issue with her R after 15k and less than two years old with fronts fine, ironically my R had less wear and had been tracked and done more miles

Rear brakes are used by ACC (it only uses the rears) and I believe its also used for ESP...

The discs shouldn't be worn though, the only time they get seriously damaged is if the pads are down to the metal...

ACC has been used about twice on my wife's as she does not know how to use it

Just FYI I've not knackered my rear brakes in 60k and I use acc all the time

Sounds a bit fishy IMO.

I'd get the dealer to show you the wear in person or at least see it on the service video most of them send out. After 25k I've one rear that's a bit scored but otherwise they are barely worn.

This. Usually one goes through at least two sets of front pads before changing the rears.

The ACC uses all brakes not just rear. I have noticed the rear rotors on MK7s get scored quicker than in other cars. Not sure if the ebrake has anything to do with it or the stability control which uses the brakes on the rear to keep the car under control when going fast in a corner.

I recon they are saying that because your rear brake hubs are corroded and they think you will fall for the 'look sir your brakes are worn, you can see how they look' line. If they were 90% worn then surely you would be able to see it. Plus there might not be ware connectors on rear pads, mainly because the fronts always go first and that warning will make you check them or go to a garage to have them checked.

If you aren't confident enough to check for yourself then take it elsewhere for a second opinion. I'd be highly dubious though for reasons given already and if right would be concerned that the brakes were binding. My previous car which a friend now owns is now on 110k miles and has had nothing changed on the rear brakes and is only just on its second set of front pads but original discs. And it was not a motorway mile cruncher, mostly local town driving plus it's an auto so should be heavier on brake wear...

Highly doubt the brakes are worn - probably the usual sh!t that VW put on the rear brakes.

My GTD has done 18k miles now and they look f**ked. Spirited braking has not helped, they are grooved so badly. Complained to VW about it. Even my previous mk7 estate which had sh!t rear brakes (same PR code) was not as bad.

Just checked mine, at 11K miles, and the rear discs are a little scored, but the wear ridge on the edge of the disc is tiny, so not much wear. The fronts are nice and flat with an even smaller wear ridge, so the rears do seem to be wearing more than the fronts, although nothing like as bad as the OPs.
I'd put it down to the ebrake, auto-hold and cornering stability control.

1 Lots of ESP

2. Get proper reading (this is for a BMW but you get the idea)

I've just had my rear discs and pads changed at my 40000 service. They were badly scored and corroded but my front discs and pads are fine. In previous cars the fronts have always gone first. I have to admit to being lazy and using the ACC at every opportunity so I put it down to this but from previous replies maybe not. My wife's Polos front discs went after about 15000 miles and when I complained to VW dealer they said that living in the NE of Scotland it was probably being near the coast and the often gritted roads! Never got any further with that one.

I seem to remember someone saying once that actually less use was worse for disc brakes than more... ie they corrode more just sitting around for long periods than being driven some distance every day

Problem is the rear brakes on modern cars do very little braking, (just more for stability), so do tend to corrode more.

I'll be checking mine at lunchtime ahead of my first service in a few weeks (currently at 14k miles), and see what they look like.

The rears do nothing compared to the fronts, mine were looking terrible and after a few heavy braking sessions from 70 to stop they cleaned themselves up. With the electric handbrake you cant pull it on while driving to clean them up.

You can, just pull and hold. You might spin out though so be careful.
