Title: Touch up paint - best place to get it from?
Post by: greencode on 30 April 2017, 22:33
So, after a frankly hopeless match from Paints4U and pretty appalling customer service I need to get some paint that actually matches the LC9A Pure White paint on my R as the first stone chip has appeared on the roof in the centre just near the windscreen.

Sounds obvious but would the touch up paint direct from VW be the best best? If so, I notice they come in a pen and lacquer combo - can you unscrew those containers so you can use a cocktail stick and possibly mix a bit of paint with lacquer?

If your local to the dealer you bought the car from pop in and ask the salesman for a touch up kit I'm surprised your car never came with it in glovebox

You don't get any free touch up kits these days. I've got the pure white paint from chipex sitting in the garage, only used once but it was a perfect match.

I always order a bottle of touch-up paint at my first service. it's inevitable that you'll get a stone chip at some point and I like to keep it handy.

Is it in a bottle that you can get into or is it a pen that you can't?

I would try a kit from Chipex before trying a VW kit.

I've got a Chipex kit for my deep black pearl gti and the colour match is spot on, very easy to apply with the tools supplied and even some thinners to remove the paint if you mess up.

Wife has a light blue touran and the genuine VW touch up kit we got from the dealer is definitely a lighter shade and a nightmare to apply with the naff little brush inside the lid.

I wonder if the kit has got better recently. I could never get on with it and found when you filled the chip and used the glove, supplied, it would then remove half of the paint you applied! Also, seems pricy for what it is.

I find the Chipex paint is a really good colour match, and if you take your time, you can get good results. I find the best technique is not to dab or smear the paint across the chipped area with the supplied glove but to build up the paint in the chip in layers using a cocktail stick until it's raised slightly above the surrounding original paintwork and once the paint is dry, use the blending solution to remove the surplus paint.

Chipex now supply a small dense foam block for use in the blending process. This wasn't included in a Chipex kit I had with a previous car a few years ago. By wrapping the supplied paint removal cloth around the foam block, applying a small amount of the blending solution to the cloth and then very gently rubbing this back and forth across the filled paint chip without applying pressure will remove the surplus paint and leave the chip repair filled with paint. It can then be polished and waxed and job done!

I've found the key is to take your time and not rush. I've not had any really large paint chips to repair, but those I have repaired, the Chipex kit has worked well.

It comes in a little bottle with a brush attached to the lid like nail varnish bottle. There's also a bottle of lacquer as well.

So if you want to use a cocktail stick yes you can poke it in and get to the paint.

Funny you should ask. Just got delivered this morning. Did a little test on a bit of white plastic, before I go ahead and put it on the car and it's a terrible match - almost grey and not "Pure white". I'm now wondering whether anybody has correctly matched the Pure White LC9A paint that the Golf has because I've now ordered from Paints4U and Chipex and they are both horrible matches. I did a test alongside each other today and they are very similar matches i.e. almost grey.

I'll let it dry, apply another coat and see what the outcome is but I can't see it miraculously changing to pure white.

I'm totally lost as to why I can't get a colour match!

Here are the two paints for Pure White (LC9A)

As you can see, definitely not white

Have you not tried the dealers for the official VW stuff? I've even seen it on eBay - https://www.ebay.ie/itm/161939268879

The brush that comes with it is too heavy for a small chip but you can use your own brush or a cocktail stick. I wouldn't bother with the lacquer either.

Chipex is comically over priced and it's claims re usage / miracle cures are dubious to say the least.

I have, yes, but 1. everybody always raves about how good the match is and how easy it is to use and 2. I didn't want to have to go down the wet and dry sanding route by hand.

I would complain to Chipex that the colour match is terrible if I was you, you'll probably  get another bottle of paint or a refund, in my experience they have excellent customer service.

Yep, will do. They do offer a colour match guarantee so I'll see what they have to say. Just seems a little odd that both the Paints4U and Chipex colours are almost the same but both completely wrong.

I used to be a parts manager and the amount of times people came back saying it was a poor match.

Shake the bottle for ages and try again!

There's only so much shaking you can do it's not going to miraculously turn a grey looking paint into pure white.

Greencode, maybe a silly question, but have you actually tried the paint on your car in the stonechip to see what it looks like? An area of paint applied to what looks like a white plastic lid in your photo isn't necessarily the best test. If you'd applied it to a black lid, it would've looked much 'whiter'.

With the Chipex kit, if the colour match isn't good on the car, the paint you've applied can be gently removed with the blending solution.

Hi. No, but the Paints4U is a similar poor match and this is what that looked like on the car

Interesting that the touched in area on your sill (Paints4U paint) doesn't look at all grey like the paint on the test patch on the plastic lid, even though it's not a perfect colour match (looks a slightly yellow-ish white compared to the original Pure White paint).

To my eye, on your plastic lid test the Paints4U paint looks to be a shade darker than the Chipex paint. I don't think you'll know how good a colour match the Chipex paint is until you use it on your car. If it is a shade lighter than the Paints4U paint, it might actually be a good match.

TBH, it's very tricky to take a photo of white unless you have the correct white balance on the camera. All I know is looking at it against the car and on the white lid, it's completely different. What I might do is put a bit on an inconspicuous area of the car and see what it looks like.

Okay, thought I'd follow your advice and paint a little patch with the Chipex. Here's the outcome. Actually looks too white!! Now, obviously, this was just applied to non-stonechipped area of the paintwork and so it's raised on the original paint. It does look more matte than the original paint but I'm assuming that once you've used the blending solution and polish that this will blend in to the original paintwork a little better?

IMO it looks better than the Paints4U for colour match. The thickness of the test patch (thicker than the original paint) probably also adds to the extra 'whiteness' that you're seeing.

If it was me, I'd apply it to the stone chip(s) you need to touch in, use the blending solution and polish so the repaired area is level with the surrounding original paint and then make a judgement on what it looks like.

Yeah, I think you're right. It's the only way of properly testing it and if it looks terrible I can always use the blending solution to gently remove the paint. TBH, the stonechip in question is on the roof just where the windscreen meets the roof near the middle so wouldn't be noticeable anyway. I'm probably just overthinking it and after the Paints4U match I just want it to be better. Saying that, can't be any worse! Terrible match and terrible customer service.

Thanks for your help and advice with this. Will post an update when the chip is filled :-)

Okay, not the greatest of pics but here's a before and after using Chipex. The match is actually really good but what I just could not do is get the paint level. I tried everything. Only used the tiniest amount of paint, and did this a few times to build up the layers but as soon as you use the blending solution along with the block it just removes the paint!

I had a chip on the front of my bonnet like that. It took about 4 applications over a month to get the paint level. Just keep adding to it after you wash the car for the next few weeks.

Thanks for the advice. Will do. TBH, it's in such a position that you would have to know it's there in order to see it but I'd like to get it near on perfect so when other chips surface in the future, I'll know what to do.

I've got the chipex pure white kit and the colour match is perfect. You need the paint to sit proud above the surrounding area and then when it's dry you've got excess paint to rub down with the other solution. Same with clear coat.

Maybe I didn't leave it long enough (20 minutes) and so when I used the solution to get level to the top surface it just removed the paint in the chip as well. Just a bit worried that if I left it too long that it would dry too much and would be tricky to level up.

20 minutes should've been long enough to wait in warm-ish weather. This is the method I use to remove the excess paint which seems to work OK and doesn't remove too much paint;
1. Ensure the paint applied to the repair stands proud of the surrounding area.
2. Make sure you use the small grey foam rubbing block supplied with the kit when using the blending solution.
3. Wrap the blue blending cloth around the foam block in the same way that you'd wrap sandpaper around a sanding block when sanding woodwork in your home ready for painting.
4. Apply a small amount of blending solution to the part of the blending cloth wrapped around the foam block; not too much blending solution, otherwise the cloth will be too wet and you may remove too much of the paint you've applied to the repaired area.
5. Rub the cloth-wrapped foam block gently across the painted area (but don't press too hard!) until the Chipex paint is level with the surrounding area.
6. Polish the repaired area.

Thanks for this. Will give it another go if it ever stops raining!!! I did follow all of those steps. May have applied too much blending solution.

From memory you only need a tiny amount of solution and I left my paint chip for an hour or two before doing mine.
