Although I've not ordered keyless on my R, Out of interest has anyone had or know of anyone with a keyless or otherwise Golf stolen in recent years? I know Audi have issues. especially with S3's. And brought to light again following that terrible event in Manchester recently. I don't know if his was keyless or not? I'm panicking a little, enough to get the old Krook-lock out of the loft!
Also any additional immobilising devices available? Shame these don't have a rotor arm anymore!
-
Every car of mine has the Disklok on them when not in use, from the humble 306 cabriolet to the very steal able Ford Focus RS 500.

I'm the same concerning using a disklok, especially when parked up at night.
My wife is considering ordering a clubsport and she won't faff about with a disklok, so maybe best to give keyless a miss :undecided:

I've looked at either a immobiliser that even with the key it wont start or a tracker. I'm going to go for the tracker as if they break in for the keys i don't want to piss them off when it wont start even thought they have the keys!
-
Yes that was terrible what happened to that guy in Chorlton.I think they broke in to get the keys.
His S3 was a 66 plate, reg in Jan 17.So i guess he'd bought it new.Even the Detective in charge of the case said although the advice is always to do nothing and call the Police. He said 'i would have confronted them as well'.It's only human nature to protect your property.
My GTD is keyless and they can steal it if they want.I think the S3 is much higher on the theft rate table than the R.
I was reading on What Car the other day, another method of stopping the crooks intercepting the signal from your keyless fob- is simply to use your key to lock and unlock it.
-
If reading about these thefts of modern cars has made me realise one thing, it's that these people are usually ruthless and will stop at nothing. They also rarely turn up unprepared.
It's human nature to defend your property, and I certainly don't believe in giving it to them on a plate. I prefer a range of visual deterrents, burglar alarm (real one not dummy box), security lights, crook lock or disk lock. However, if they ignore all this and decide to help themselves anyway, then they really mean business and probably won't think twice about clobbering you if you get in their way.
I've also read if they suspect the vehicle has a tracker they aren't averse to tearing it apart to find the receiver. If they did that, would you want the car back? I'm not sure I would.

One of the many reasons I have against keyless nice in thought not in practice in this day and age with the many opportunitists immobiliser alarm is standard but obviously not when they have the keys I got mine fitted with a 24hr monitoring tracker system within a couple of weeks of getting my car.
The car is monitored on via the app I can see exactly where it is
It's not going to stop it from happening but it's a help

Over on VWROC (the R specific forum) every member car that have been stolen (and there's been a good few), has been a case of thieves breaking into the house for the keys, not by any kind of keyless theft. .
If thieving scum want a car, they'll take it, and if keyless means they can take it without breaking into the house and a potential confrontation (with potentially terrible consequences as in the recent tragic case) then better that. Nobody wants to have their hard earned possessions stolen but a car sure isn't worth losing your life over.

Doesn't matter if it's keyless or not if they want it bad enough nothing will stop them

Sorry, I have never hear of this, what is it?

Basically it puts the car into hibernation and nothing will work. It is meant to stop the battery running down while parked up for a long time or being say transported to like America where it will spend weeks on a boat.

Transport mode is a new one on me how and where are the settings for it as I would assume a few peeps on here would be interested

I Googled Transport Mode.I think you need access to someone with VCDS (Vag-Com) to switch it on and off.
Sounds like a pretty handy thing to have.

Yes it needs VCDS or OBDeleven, I've been using it for over 10 years.

I have the Autowatch Ghost fitted to mine and its worked flawlessly. Irrespective of whether thieves bypass the OBD or have the keys, without the code which is inputted by a series of self selected/programmed button presses, the car won't start.
Mind you, still didn't stop someone from having a crack at breaking into my house for the keys recently.
Also use a disklok following that when parked overnight or for any length of time.
-
Has anyone had a tracker fitted? I noticed the VW configurator allows you to include the Vodafone Protect and Connect 6. The website mentions 25% discount on insurance with this fitted, so slightly tempted as I work away some weeks. So any recommendations would be much appreciated.

The 25% discount looks as if it only applies to motor home and caravans fitted with Vodafone Protect and Connect 5 or 6 that are insured with Caravan Guard Insurance.

Oops, I must have saw the 25% and did not read the rest correctly. Still tempted as it will help give me some piece of mind when I am away with work. Need to research the options more though.

I have had a quick look at the website and a local company install the products so interested. How has it been installed in your car, the site mentions it integrates with existing components within the car cabin.

From the Ross tech website:
The [Transport Mode] function found in the Applications Screen is used in some vehicles using CAN for diagnostics, to Activate or De-activate a special Transport Mode that is used by the factory to put the cars into a "sleep" mode to conserve battery charge during long periods of inactivity.
[Activate Transport Mode]
Clicking this button will put applicable vehicles into Transport Mode, shutting down most systems.
[De-Activate Transport Mode]
Clicking this button will "wake up" applicable vehicles from Transport Mode, powering up most system.
These functions are only available when using professional-grade interfaces.
On some early CAN-based cars, Transport Mode cannot be re-enabled once the car has more than 150km on the odometer.

The install is covert, basically integrates into the can bus wiring and my installer didn't show me where he fitted it. You use existing components to de-activate the immobiliser. For example you set a passcode based upon key presses. Can be steering wheel button presses, such as volume up/down/left/right/OK, etc. You can also use certain other switches like, window up/down, etc. Once set, you then press the Start button leaving you foot off the brake, punch in the series of key/button presses which is effectively your PIN and then your hazard indicators flash, you press the brake and start button again. Sounds a faff, but you soon get into the swing of things. There is a valet mode overwrite as well for when the car goes into service.
I have the early product without iPhone integration. But the iPhone version looks easier to operate but restricts you to one device so not practical if you have multiple drivers.

I was going to go with the autowatch ghost but thought if they broke in for the keys i didn't fancy waking up and being forced to hand over the PIN.
I'm going for a self install rechargeable tracker http://www.trackersecurity.co.uk/automatrics-mtrack.html let the take the car but know where it is i don't need one for insurance BUT id like to get one over the C#~t that nicks it.
They have youtube channel where they log some of their finds https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWRXwGwCL8VqRaDSqmCnxaw (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWRXwGwCL8VqRaDSqmCnxaw)

I bet it is, Nasty experience all round. And in many ways can spoil the enjoyment of ownershiip. What annoys me is today's gloating over crime figures. Out of date, cars are back on the hit list, just cyber crime. What can you do but do your best to not let em win!
Felel for you mate, maybe a BIG dog is best solution?

Just spotted this very latest form of keyless theft.Through the walls of your house!.Video here:

I didn't think the transponder signal would be that strong to pick up this way!.

Sorry to go a little off topic....
Does anyone know why a new Golf R 7.5 in 5 door can be specced with keyless but the 3 door version can't?
-
I mat be wrong but I'm not sure if any 3 door came with keyless Gti or R

A very simple way to protect against this, if you are concerned, is to wrap the key loosely in a piece of aluminium foil, so that there are 3, or so, layers all around the key. I think it's called a Faraday Cage. The foil prevents the key from operating the keyless system, even when right next to the car, so no signal for the bad guys to pick up and amplify. :nerd:

Yeah i've heard about that one.I think it is like the foil lined bags that shoplifters use, to stop the tags activating as they leave the shop.
Also read that if you leave your fob in the fridge or microwave it blocks the signal.I wouldn't put tit in the oven mind....
