Title: Drive the deal?
Post by: Mk1Macca on 19 April 2017, 17:58
Ok, after a few test drives today, we want to buy a 7.5 GTi DSG.

Nothing too exciting, just 90% tints and keyless.

Tried a couple of dealers and the best we could get was about 4%, which took the price to about 30k.

Car wow has come back so far with £27,442 (with the deposit contribution), but the DtD price is £25,696. Quite the difference.

Has anyone actually ever used drive the deal? Do you actually get that price? Where does the order get placed? Basically, are they legit?

Does anyone know of any dealers that will actually match the price, or eve get close to it? I prefer to do things face to face, but not if it means paying considerably more!

Yes they are legit. The price on the screen is the price you pay, or at least it was when I bought my Mk5 through them in 2004.

You may not get a local dealer though, so if this bothers you also try Carwow or Orangewheels. They will also offer large discounts but perhaps not quite as competitive as Drive The Deal.

I used them for my wife's Mazda last year. They are fully legit and she was full of their praise for the process. In that case, the car came from a dealer in Norwich and as it was on finance we had to go and pick it up so that the paperwork could be signed, but they paid for the train ticket.
Their cars come from UK dealers and if you don't need or want to go and pick it up, it can be delivered to your door (with a few exceptions).

I took my DtD price to my local dealer when ordering the Golf I'm due to take delivery of and they matched it. I was about to pay the deposit to DtD so if they'd have said no I would have walked away and done so.

Drive the Deal have a really good reputation around the car forums and are just a car broker who put you in touch with a dealership for a guaranteed price. I was very close to ordering through them for my 7.5 GTI but I went with my local dealership in the end.

The dealership that DTD put you in touch with for VW's is JCB in Kent and it would have been a 500 mile round trip for me. I managed to get a deal with my local (Crewe) for under £500 difference which was worth it for me to purchase locally and would be a lot easier to deal with any problems.

Take your quote to the local dealers and tell them you sign for the car today if the match the quote. They will usually  get near to it , especially if they need to meet their targets for the month! nearer the end of the month the better so wait to next week. Its always worked for me. They won't do the deal over the phone but in person they will be up for it and fools if they are not as they have lost your business if other dealers are giving that discount they can.

Out of interest, which dealers managed to get close to the price? If I could get within £500, I would place the order directly with a dealer, but the two I tried in person today, couldn't (wouldn't) even get close.

I've had two offers from car wow so far, neither are as good as the DtD price.

If there are any dealers on the forum that can get close, feel free to contact me.

You can sometimes negotiate with the dealers on Carwow. I managed to get one of my local dealers to drop their price to within £300 of DTD by doing this.

Failing this, try ringing DTD and ask them where the closest dealer is that they deal with. They sometimes have other dealers besides the one offering the onscreen price.

PM Lee, known as "evo1986" on the forum - he's a manager at Inchcape Cheltenham and will do his best to get you a good deal.

I bought my R through DTD and really great all round experience with both them and the dealership JCB Medway (DTD's southern dealer).  They have a very good reputation and know of many people who have used them and recommend them.  They were cheaper than carwow by some way, and just cheaper than Orangewheels.  Local dealer could not come close to broker price.

As said yeah but in my case the dealers were quite happy to discuss deals over the phone especially if your doing a self new build on the configurater  once you get the short code for what options you want speak to the relivant dealers email them the short code tell them what your happy to pay.
My 16 Gti came close to 36k ish I told them I'd pay 28k and they agreed and that's what I paid.
That bein said it was 2 days to the month end so as mentioned waiting till month end can pay dividends saving you money

DTD always beat carwow in my experience. Very reputable company.

I would like to vouch for DTD too, ordered my current GTI through them in 2014 and due to pick my new R up on Friday through DTD again. Always found DTD really helpful and the dealers have been good too, the dealers have been different each time but they seem to have someone just dealing with DTD orders.
I suppose the downside is the location might involve some travel for you if you want to pick the car up. Orange Wheels are good too and they will part ex, saying that the quote I had from their Audi dealer for partex was poor.
The VW is taking my GTI this time though and offered a fair price so sorted.

How does it work if you want to go the PCP route? Who do you crunch the numbers with, DtD, or the actual dealer it would get placed with?

If you want to take the VW finance option DTD will take some details off you regarding deposit and how much you want to pay monthly etc and will supply you with the details. You can change the amounts as you want and if you wish to go ahead the dealer will contact you and can be changed further.

I played off a number of fairly local dealers against the best quotes that I had from DtD and CarWow, there was a relatively small but not insignificant gap between DtD and CarWow in favour of DtD.  Managed to get my local dealer to a price between DtD and CarWow that I was happy with, so bought locally.  It's definitely worth canvassing all of the dealerships in a relatively sensible driving distance.  I had much better luck with dealers when saying "X dealer has offered me this at £xxxxx" rather than "DtD/CarWow have offered this at £xxxxx".

Remember your local dealer will try to tell you that dtd is going to be grey imports and not from a vw dealer and all sorts. It's none of those things and everything they can offer (finance, service packages etc) is available.

They also might say they can't match the price and that could well be true. Dealerships get discounts probably calculated by committed sales quota targets...

Apart from maybe having to travel some distance to pick it up, there are no gotchas.

Have spoken to a few dealers and none of them will even get close to the DtD price.

Remember £1000 of the DTD discount is conditional upon signing up for finance (which you can settle within a few days of collecting your car). Have your local dealers offered you the finance contribution as part of their discount?

It may be worth ringing DTD and asking them if they have a dealer anywhere close to you. Failing that there are other brokers around such as Carfile, UK Car Broker and Orangewheels that are only a few hundred more expensive than DTD and they may be closer to you.

The dealer DTD seem to be using at the moment are based in the Home Counties. The name is mentioned in a thread in the vwroc.com forum. I had to travel to Liverpool last time from South Wales but the saving was well worth the travel in my mind plus you get the chance to have a good drive in your new car. Alternatively the cost includes having the car driven to your home address. Personally I did not fancy this option. Due to pick up my new car tomorrow and have found the dealer very good so would recommend them.

When my parents bought their Mini Cooper through DTD they paid about £500 extra for it to be delivered to their house on a transporter.

It still worked out less expensive than using the local dealer.
