I've doubly doubly doubly checked, but can people please confirm I've done the timing right.....
92 Mk1 GTI Cabriolet, previously converted to KR16v on motorbike carbs. ran fine but engine was well worn when I bought it so bought replacement.
Now Timing how I have it is -
Bottom crank pulley, marks lined up at top TDC
Cam pulley lined up at top TDC
Piston one is at TDC
Flywheel is on TDC (not the 6 BTDC)
The distributer hasn't got a notch, but where all above is at TDC the rotor arm should point to lead no. 1... Yes???
Rotor arm turns forwards (anticlockwise when looking from distributer side)
Lead 1 where rotor is at TDC, then lead 3, 4 and 2
Please please confirm I have all this correct as it just won't fire on no. 3 and 4..!
Thanks
Wilson

The flywheel is a good place to check TDC as it's circumference is larger than the crank pulley.
So far it sounds as though you're doing it right.
Did you use a DTI to check for TDC? As that's another sure way of doing it.

If it wont fire on 3 and 4 its not a timing belt issue.
How have you checked its firing and not firing.
Sound more like ignition side to me.

Thanks guys, I thought I wasn't going mad had checked and double checked it all, but I'm the kind of guy that spends days trying to figure out what's wrong when the most obvious thing is staring me in the face!
Turns out this was a problem with two of the carbs! Thanks for your comments
