Title: FL GTI VS R comparison video
Post by: gazmondo35 on 15 April 2017, 17:03
I can't believe we are at a point where a stock golf r can hit 60 in 4.2 seconds.

The swirl marks on both cars  were they supplied by VW Solihull by any chance

Aren't they quoted 4.8 to 100kph? Cup 2 tyres will have made a big difference as well. Was it down hill? Still shows what a wonderful car the R is.

Maybe the GTi wheels aren't as bad as I originally thought. Would need to see them in real life but look better in that video than pics I have seen.

I'm pretty sure I've seen pre-facelift DSG Golf R's hit 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds so 4.2 isn't far off.

The very first frame of the GTI alloys - on the tyres it says... dun, dun, da... Bridgestone  There was a bit of wheel spin on the GTI Performance launch. No surprise on those tyres.

That was not the standard Golf R. Cup 2 tyres, 4WD and 65 horses make all the difference.

... and yet he said the GTI was more responsive and all the car you are going to need in the real world

I don't think the Cup 2 tyres are what's made the difference.  My TTS has the same engine, horsepower etc as the facelift R, and that's been timed at 4.1 0-60 (book says 4.6), so I'd expect the R to be able to do the same on normal daily tyres.

Far better in the flesh. They are quite chunky and angular compared to the Austins

Gotta say, that video has me doubting my decision to get a GTI. Or maybe it is just the beer

Sticking to my original reasons -

- never had a GTI before.
- GTI should be a noticeable improvement in performance for me (especially when fitted with better tyres!)
- lower insurance, can run on ordinary petrol, more economical, more responsive, better interior (?)
- can fit tow bar for kayak trailer.
- all things considered: the better real world car for me.
- and, did I mention, I have never had a GTI before = decision made!

That R is seriously quick .  However I didn't realise how dull the interior was and also the GTi without tartan seats doesn't look so good.  Both are excellent cars but are they worth £10-15 K + trade-in on my '64 plate Mk7 GTi PP with less than 20k miles?  The answer is "no".  I'll hang on for the Mk8.

Yep, you wait until MK8 with equally 'dull' interior(which is fine for me). They only do practical, that's why we love them.

I often think at the moment why did I order the GTI, compared to rivals from a performance perspective it's really low in the pecking order.

However I also think how often did I hoon around in the S3 Mk2 I had and make use of its full performance, it wasn't that often. So I understand where Matts coming from, the GTI will be more than you need for everyday stuff.

I wonder has anyone ever bought a Golf R and wondered if they should have bought a GTI? ... though there may have been much 'man math' involved.

There have been a few stories of people buying the GTD/GTI and changing their mind.

I was driving along the local prom today saying to my wife, "I spy with my little eye something beginning  with R!"

There was a nice shiny red GTD too.

I can't say I've regretted my choice in buying a GTI rather than an R for one second.
If the R was badged GTI-R, I may have considered it : )

I wonder has anyone ever bought a Golf R

Nope.

Depends what you want.  If you want a very capable fun golf, get a GTI, if you want a VERY capable exhilarating golf, get an R.

I was just watching that video again. Have they simplified the launch control procedure? No more faffing about with the traction control. The car also says when it's ready to launch

How much does all that launch control/drag race stuff really matter to anyone, other than for YT/forums/pub bragging? And who honestly buys a car based on 0-60 times? It probably is the most irrelevant indication about a car's actual full-range performance for 99,9% of the buyers (ie. not drag-racers). Not only the time is heavily influenced by the type of drive and makes awd seem faster than it actually is in every other acceleration scenario other than a standstill start but maybe more importantly, performance cars today are so much more than a simple sprint to 60mph like they were 30 years ago.

A 60-120 or even 40-100mph run (which are actually a far more likely scenario if we were all a bit more honest) is a way better indication of a modern car's performance without the type of drive, tyres and inertia (for heavier cars) influencing half as much as in 0-60 races.

Where does the clubsport 40 go in that equation? Its actually quite similar in price to the R, so which one would you go for?

Tried my GTD today with the CRD3+ on program 2 and pedal box on program 1+1 and the 50-70mph in 4th gear and it was between 3.8 and 4 seconds, not bad I suppose.
