Title: New performance packs for Golf R and Golf R Estate
Post by: evo1986 on 31 March 2017, 13:37
New performance packs for Golf R and Golf R Estate

We are introducing two exciting new option packs for the new Golf R and Golf R Estate models.

R performance pack
The recommended retail price (RRP) is £2,300 and the pack includes:

• R performance braking system
• derestricted top speed allows Hatch models to reach 166mph (267km/h) and Estate models to hit 168mph (270 km/h)
• new rear spoiler which gives 20kg more downforce (Hatch models only)
• 65 per cent tinted windows (this is already standard in UK)
• 19-inch Spielberg alloys

R performance Akrapovič titanium exhaust
This lightweight titanium performance exhaust with a honeycomb design made by Akrapovič will cost £2,975 RRP.

The R performance exhaust has round instead of oval pipes and will have valve control which customers can manage through the Driver Profile Selection. It’s 7kg lighter than the standard exhaust system, high temperature resistant and has optimal rust protection.

This performance exhaust system was fitted to the new Golf R at the Geneva Motor show last week, so has featured on some social media sites.

Wow, expensive stuff. Particularly when you add in the new road tax 40k list price penalty.

Funny also that the estate is faster than the hatch :-)

Probably better aero - longer shape and no drag inducing add on rear spoiler.

If were spending that money you would want Pretoria and would the larger brakes, tweaked spoiler and an increased speed limit that will never use be worth the difference from cost of taking the Pretoria as an option.

As for the exhaust, really like the tips, so it would be for the aesthetics opposed to anything the exhaust gives functionally.

Sometimes you are tempted by certain options, but not these at them prices, think a panoramic roof would be far better value for example if want to up your spend, though that £40k ceiling does loom large.

Of course there will be some where money is not a consideration and they can just select away, so I am talking from a perspective where you have to have a little think on what gives most bang for the extra buck.

That's because the engine is trying to get away from the box on rear end

For that sort of money an extra cylinder and 360ps would be nice.

New RS3 with 400ps won't be too far off that price.

That's what I was thinking.  5 cyl and 360ps would be just right at this price point.  I assume the 5 cyl motor should just slot in to the MQB platform.

Any pics of the spoiler? Is it from the Clubsport?

Very interesting post.  Those packs, albeit expensive, are certainly tempting.  I'd like to see a few more vids of the sound of the exhaust though, hopefully they'll come over the next month or so, and some pops and crackles would be welcome.

Fashion is a funny thing.
A few years ago it was all about whooshy dump valve noises and now every "petrol head" craves a few backfires from the exhaust.
Admittedly it can sound quite amusing in the right conditions but it makes me wonder what the next big ''must have" noise will be when we're all driving electric semi-autonimous cars.

Motor whine maybe?

That Nissan thing on Top Gear last night demonstrated it, but I've never heard it on any current electric milkfloats cars

I was initially thinking of something like motor-whine but then went on to excess tyre roar maybe?
Those Bridgestones could become trendy after all

Wasn't the old GTD Sport and Sound technology actually developed for electric vehicles?

That would be my thinking, the higher the power, the torque the more intense the motor whine,

To be honest, noises are nice, but it would still be the overall package of power, drive, comfort and looks and when you see what BMW have done with the i8 then the future of performance hybrid lower down food chain does look bright.

The extended future will be solar powered cars with the roof being one thin super efficient solar panel that powers super light batteries that in turn drives high powered engines.

I'll be one of those annoying old bastards that drives down the road in a solar panelled mobility scooter by then!

I guess the desired sound will be the same as the sound made by truly high performance cars... I watched some formula E the other day, so maybe some sound like that...

So tick these boxes and you are well into the £40K territory.

Assuming brakes are the CCS disc and pad upgrade rather than new callipers etc

Akra will be superb but at the end of the day it is only a 4 cylinder turbo in terms of noise and will mean you make friends with the neighbours

People in Scotland are going to be screwed 50 weeks of the year in that case

Seriously, if I bought an R with that I'd want someone to give me a good slap. It sounds sh!t, but that could be down to the sound quality of the makers of the video.

It sounds very much like the Sountdaktor from the in car shots, obviously the mic is picking that hideous noise up rather than the exhaust due to where they've located the mic to hear the guy's voice clearly.

I meant it sounds bad from the outside.

Yeah like I wanted a GTi said, they had video shots from the outside. It doesn't sound much different to the stock Golf R exhaust from what I've seen.

I thought it sounded ok for a 4 cyl hatch with road legal exhaust.
Maybe not staggeringly better than the standard exhaust with the flaps open but I'm not really the target market for a £3k exhaust.

I've literally just walked past an A45 AMG at the lights and that sounded great. That's a 4 cylinder engine too and from what I saw it didn't look like it had any exhaust mods.

I liked the sound of it.  Ok, it's not an audi RS noise, but certainly sounded louder.  When he was hammering it and we had the inside noise it definitely sounded louder than my TTS (which has effectively the same engine, power etc) - and yes I know its all fake noise but I still think its decent!  I really like the interior too with the new infotainment screen and virtual dials.  Unfortunately, with both the performance pack and exhaust pack I'd be looking at a £45k car from the spec I'd want - which is a hell of a lot of money!  But, Tornado Red with black mirror caps and black press....

Has anyone heard from their dealer if either of these two packs are available to order yet?  Just spoke to my local dealer and the chap I spoke to had never heard either performance pack.  I'm guessing you can't spec it yet?  Thanks in advance

Nice find Craig, especially as the VW site still hasn't got it on there  Specced mine up!

It's worth noting that carwow includes the first year tax of £500 in their quote, which if you're around the magic £40k mark it's worth keeping in mind!

Well if I could find a dealer to offer me a half decent part ex value for my car I would!

Really like the facelift R, and I always do this - disappear from the Golf fold for a year or two then come back again - a bit like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III, I keep getting pulled back in again!
