Title: Downside of pre-registered car?
Post by: greencode on 27 March 2017, 17:15
Is there any downside of buying a pre-registered car? Just been offered a standard R for £25k that was pre-registered today annoyingly.

You'll be the second registered keeper....

Warranty is transferable, but already ticking, you might miss out on a few days of the 3 years.

Might not be able to reject it if it has any factory defects?

You won't be able to get VW Finance new car PCP deals (probably?). VW second hand car finance is more expensive (interest) and you don't get a deposit contribution.

Thanks for this. I think £25k is a really good deal so I'm not too fussed about being the 2nd owner as I'll be able to prove when I sell it that the garage only owned it for a few days. Factory defects: I'm going to view the car prior to purchase so will make sure to have a good look around and I'll be buying outright so no need for finance.

Is this the White Manual MK7 Golf R? If it is, it's nice that you got another grand knocked off it.

Just been looking into pre-registered cars a little more and the other thing is most insurance companies will give you a brand new car if it's written off or stolen (not found) within the first year.

Sure is a great deal. Was this car being advertised online? Would be nice to know what tactics you used to lower the price.

I used to work in the insurance industry and yes, most insurers will provide a replacement brand new car if your car is the subject of a total loss claim or is damaged beyond economic repair within the first 12 months of it's first registration. However, this is subject to you having bought or leased the car from new and you are the first registered keeper. If you are the second (or any subsequent) owner / registered keeper within the first 12 months from date of first registration as in the case of buying a pre-registered car and the car is written off or stolen and not recovered, then the normal market practice of insurers would be to settle any total loss claim on the basis of market value at the time of loss and not give you a brand new car.

VW insurance adopts this approach, and so does my current insurer. Link to VW's insurance policy below. The relevant 'small print' is in Section C ; 'How we will settle your claim under sections A or C' - 'Replacement Vehicle' section of text (right hand side of page).

No, not advertised online as far as I know. I just sent an email to around 15 local-ish dealers and some got back to me, some didn't. I was initially asking for a used one for around 20k and this dealer got back to me and said there was a new unregistered R in their stock for £29,365. I then asked whether that was the best price they could do and they got back to me with £25,995 figure. I then said my ideal budget was £25k and they said yes, this was after getting in touch with their dealership elsewhere and finding out that the car had literally, today, just been registered as they wanted to get it done by the end of the month i.e. Friday.

Yeah, I had a look at my Privilege insurance policy and pretty much the same thing. Chance I'll have to take TBH. I would have been looking at a year old used model at pretty much the same price as I'm getting it for new so wouldn't have had this available anyway.

If you shop around, you could get gap insurance to make up the difference?

Nice car, nice deal!

Yeah, I did think about GAP insurance. Seems pretty cheap, unless I'm really missing something! Around about £150 for 3 year cover. Need to have a look into a little more.

What about production date. Is that something I should ask about/be concerned about?

In what respect? The only things to change are/were the adoption of MIB2 (ages ago now) and then the Mk7.5, which it definitely isn't.

For gap insurance, it just needs to be less than 10 years old and have less then 80k on the clock (thats using the ALA/Pistonheads policy for replacement vehicle (https://www.pistonheadsgap.co.uk/)

Not sure TBH! Just me being cautious. I found out anyway. Production date was 01/08/16.

GAP: Thanks for this. Will have a look around this evening.
