Title: Active Info Display MPH to KMH conversion
Post by: Fabio Bignose on 25 March 2017, 08:23
Hi All,

Does anyone know or could hazard a guess as to whether the AID can be converted to KMH from MPH via a software change or is it an actual hardware swap?

I am hoping to get the go ahead to order a GTD Estate into Ireland as this model, among others not available here...  :sad:

I assume the swap on the display can be swapped to show kph through the settings on the head unit obviously your dials will have the mpg on the outer and kph on the inside  :whistle:

Surely VW were smart enough to code the display to show either kph or mph and not show both together? Although when you look at some of their ways of doing things like no keyless on a 3 door I may well be wrong.

You see the unit of speed measurement in the MIB setup page just like you do on a Mk7 to show KMH between the clocks.

I don't think you can have a graphic for MPH and KMH at the same time though

Active info display in the brochure for the mk7.5 Golf shows mph only in the speedometer, not both mph and kph;

Non-UK models show kph only;

You would think producing just one set of dials and adapting to each market via software is a massive cost and manufacturing time saving..?

Whats frustrating is being able to see the perfect car for my current circumstances but being denied the ownership experience.

I even considered a Passat Estate in my desperation but 190hp variant not offered in Ireland...!!

I cannot go backwards in power so no logical progression from GTD Hatchback currently

There appears to be more doors closing on my VW relationship than opening currently...!!

Hopefully VW Ireland come good and go that extra mile for me..

I'd say it's a simple setting in the menus or via VCDS. I highly doubt there's any hardware difference.
Easy way to find out, call into a dealers that has a car with it fitted (even a Passat or Tiguan) and have a root through the radio settings. I bet there's a setting for mph/kph.

Good advice Joe.

I shall check this out if VW agree to import.

Thanks all.  :smiley:

It used to be called alternative speed display or something like that on ore mqb cars. You should be able to toggle on the MFD between the two for when you drive abroad.

I'll bet you just change the units of measurement in the car setup menu. As I said, it does it already...

I would be very surprised if this is not the case, after all, you can swap the headlight dipping for driving on the right. With the advertised choices of display, why would mph/kph not be one of them?

Do all uk cars not have to be able to show kph in the main display and not just in the centre DIS

Thanks for comments guys and ur right, alternative readout can be selected via MFD but my situation is more about 'type approval' and the ability to have the principal readout in the 'local currency' ie KMH here in Ireland.
I have been led to believe that to import a brand new car here from the UK, traditionally the dials wud need to be swapped out. However, now its a digital display i wud hope the AID can simply be reprogrammed to display the native readout, ie KMH and not MPH.

It has to be able to. European car don't have to show mph but uk car do have to be able to show kph on the main speed display hence why our car her in the uk(and cars from a few years back in Ireland) have such cluttered up displays.

Even the old UR Quattro's with the digital displays were able to be changed from mph to kph I think.

The new digital dashes would be simply a matter of changing something with VCDS as for cost sake they would all be the same world wide with different programming.

I'm pretty sure that changing the unit of measurement will toggle the virtual dials as well as the "MFD" readout (which is virtualised as well now).

Wouldn't make any sense for it to be any different
