Title: Went for a drive in a Mark 7 Golf R Estate today!
Post by: sam67GTD on 20 March 2017, 17:27
It's time to change the GTD for something with a bit more performance, so I figured a Golf R Estate would be ideal.....hmmm definitely no to an estate, but the Golf R, now there's an idea!

The estate is brilliant in R guise for the owner who needs such capacity. As for me, well, I'm a 3 door man all the way! First time in an R and a DSG virgin, so you can imagine I was a bit excited and apprehensive as to how the drive was going to go. In short, the R is awesome, as you guys who own them know. The GTD is a great drive, but this beast is on another level altogether

OK, so I done the deal for a new facelift 3 door DSG Golf R in Lapiz blue, black Pretorias, Dynaudio, DCC and reversing camera. Hopefully I can expect delivery in June, until then the wait is going to be

Congrats on the order! If you don't mind, what deal did you manage to get on the FL R?

Nice! I test drove a GTD 3 years ago and ended up buying a R without even seeing one. Now on my second, they R fantastic cars. The DSG is very versatile, takes time to realise what it can do. If not already aware, visit VWROC, plenty of R nuts on there.

Golf R - Check
3dr - Check
DSG - Check

Great spec and glad you enjoyed your test drive, we have had ours since last June and I have to admit its the best car I have owned in 25 years of driving due to it being so versatile.

Thanks guys. I was really nervous with the DSG, after 30 years of having a clutch, it's a bit of a comfort blanket! There's so many modes in the DSG box, I'm really going to have to do some homework over the next few months to learn what's what

I am stumping up the £75 to have the mirrors in gloss black, not really a fan of the silver mirror caps. I will probably get the mirrors carbon wrapped and even toying with the idea of having the roof wrapped in gloss black a bit like the performance R!

Good choice.  Had my R 17 months now and it just gets better and better.  Like Raffe, best car I've ever had. As for DSG, you have made the right choice.  Can be a learning curve but you will adapt your driving and once you know how to work with it, you'll get the best out of the box, and experience the R at its best, and the DSG works sublimely with the new tech, autohold etc.  Perfect.

Thank you Booth  I've listened to many YouTube videos and nearly all of them recommended the DSG as it compliments the R. It is a bit scary moving slow and reversing and really confusing when you come to a stop or a junction. Similar to the auto handbrake was when I got the GTD, but it's second nature now and I suspect the DSG will be the same

First of all Congratulations on your purchase Sam, very nice spec...

@ Raffe - Out of interest (if you don't mind me asking) how much is the wrap costing you...?

I got a quote but I only need half of the roof wrapped due to the Panroof which was £140.

I'm getting my mirrors carbon dipped, should look good against the night blue.

I've never seen that before, but reading their stuff its basically a decal sheet applied to the item and then lacquered over the top to seal it.

Not sure thats any better or worse than just "old fashioned" wrapping.

I did like their options list - the sandstone finish was quite nice or maybe a nice polished granite...

BTW I did find this thread that talks about wrapping vs "dipping" and some of the problems...
