Let the fuel go down to almost zero and filled up with the Shell expensive stuff, feel the difference almost straight away, still running mine in 523 miles on the clock and give it some beans now and then, so many Golf GTI /R on the road and nobody knows that mines a special one, bit frustrating as i dont get a flash of appreciation unlike driving the Focus RS 500, and Escort Cossie, but thats exactly why i bought it for my daily driver.

Another thumbs up for V-Power/Optimax/Whatever they are calling it this week.
Only fuel we will use in the road car and race car.
Its a shame you dont get the recognition for the CS-S. The good folk of Cheshire love our CS.
-
I have only run V-Power in our R from brand new, never had anything else.
Why buy a performance orientated model and then not give it quality fuel.
-
I tend to put Tesco's 99ron momentum in my GTI. Have also used vpower and cannot tell a difference. I imagine the additives in the Shell one are better though.

Is it worth it in the GTI though as it's tuned to run on 95 RON? Have you noticed any difference against standard unleaded?
-
Every time vw driver do a road test on a gti or a turbo'd model they always say to use the higher octane fuel. It's probably worth it even just for the additional additives and keeping the fuel system cleaner.
-
V Power from new here too (GTI PP). Just over 8000 miles and never a tank of anything else!

You won't generate any more power, engine may run a little cooler, additional additives may help...

I have had two identical Civic Type-R's one ran on standard 95 RON Unleaded the other Momentum 99 RON Unleaded. I could tell the difference in the sound of the engine after 3 months ownership on both since new. The Standard unleaded engine sound a lot more raspier and tinny after 3 months. The Power delivery only felt like it sparked a little quicker on the car running momentum 99 so slightly more poke but only minor difference between them on this point. The main difference is the engine stays sounding cleaner and running better for longer during ownership and this was enough for me to continue using Super Unleaded fuel.
-
Stuck to V power since ownership of the PP. I mixed up with the edition 30, V power, Esso 97 and Momentum 99. That will end When I go to Cornwall this June.At some point bound to end up with the local stuff.

It'll generate more power, as evidenced by hundreds of dyno graphs on Golfs and otherwise. Perhaps you're thinking of the effect of premium diesel?

How much more power, do you have any links to these dyno graphs? I seem to recall Fifth Gear did a piece on this a few moons ago using a MK6 GTI as their guinea pig and the differences weren't much. Not being awkward, just interested

I saw the same episode very recently. I'll stick to the cheaper stuff, petrol is expensive enough as it is.
I'm sure plenty of people would disagree and would sooner use the expensive option but I'm not overly convinced of the added benefits.

That's what I think, nothing wrong in having the choice and perhaps the expensive stuff does keep the engine a bit cleaner but will it make any difference during the years of my ownership? Unlikely.

The problem with the 5th gear test was that they didn't run the car for a few tank fills. All they did was drain the system and put other fuel in and run it on the dyno again.

One here that was just one the first links on Google:
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/159631-95-vs-99-octane-dyno-graph.html (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/159631-95-vs-99-octane-dyno-graph.html)
APR have multiple dyno graphs on their website showing all sorts of stages of tune vs different octane ratings.

Ahh the old fuel debate....have a look in the owners manual. I would imagine it's the same as the R, if you don't use 97RON or higher the car will dial back the ignition so you won't make the published power output. Use 97 or higher and you will.
Tuned cars are a different kettle of fish entirely as they can have the limits pushed right out if you use VPower or Tesco 99 for example. It gets harder to use normal unleaded if you get stuck then though.

I currently own a Corsa VXR and have ran super in it since day 1. I believe that it is better for the engine and any performance or mpg increases are a bonus.
This is VW's opinion:
"For most vehicles standard unleaded is fine (95RON) but for GTI and 'R we recommend super unleaded (98RON)"

Thanks for posting that, maybe I'll give it some thought then but if I do I'll probably try the Tesco Momentum.
-
I personally think it's worth it for the higher octane level alone. The engines are designed to run on 97+ as stated by VW, so why wouldn't you use that? If they say put 30psi in the tyres you wouldn't put 27psi in would you.

V Power or Momentum for me and if I cannot get either and need a splash and dash BP Ultimate (which Revo once recommended if I could not get full fat 98)
Both of ours are stock these days so I am not as obsessive as I used to be when running modified cars

Dito on the modified bit lol I must admit iv used Tesco momentum 99 Ron since day 1 in my 16 Gti not able to compare with anything else but iv had no issues and Tbh that's what il continue to use even though it's slightly more expensive can't see the point having a performance car and running cheapest fuel but that's just me

In reality it is Momentum for me 80% of the time as that is my local brew

Yeah same here but Tesco's local to work bout 1/4 mile away so it's a no brainer as the other alternative to home is Morrisons lol
-
Please please please don't use morrisons fuel, I see standard cars pulling up to 9 degrees of timing on that, which equates to around 15bhp. Maybe its just our local one but who knows.

Is that the one in Burntwood?
-
Does Sainsbury's have a super unleaded 97 of 98 Ron fuel. Sure i read somewhere they did.
-
I have always used either Shell V Power ( Optimax as it was once known) or Tesco Momentum in my previous cars and now in the GTI P/P. Did put some 'new' V Power Nitro in the other day and to be honest, didn't feel any different to Momentum, and it was 6p a ltr dearer. But the people in the know say you have to fill the tank a couple of times for the ECU to adjust. Whether this is true I am yet to be convinced.

Thanks for that. I didn't understand what you meant about the timing so I looked it up. I think I'll switch to my local BP from now.

Sainsburys have proper 97 Ron, not additive boosted but not sure if all stations have it.

Thought I'd give this a go then so yesterday filled up with 48 litres of Tesco's finest. I'll continue to do so for the next few fills and see if I can notice the difference. Hope so as the additional cost could've been a bottle of beer and a bag of crisps, or two bags of pork scratchings
