Hi all, this has been bothering me for a good while now so thought I'd ask the collective. When cleaning both of our cars this weekend, I noticed that the scuttle panel trim (the full width plastic trim under the wipers at the bottom of the windscreen) on my Golf collected water on the passenger side as there's only a drain hole on the drivers side.
When doing the wife's Polo, there is a drain hole either side. As our driveway has a camber on it, it always leans slightly to the passenger side and hence the water. I'm not sure if on LHD models the drain is shifted to that side, so my question is, would it be safe to drill a small hole on the passenger side to allow the water to escape or is there something under there that should be protected ?

Guess the theory is that any water in there will eventually be sent to the drain as the car is driven. Don't know what's under the passenger side, but the drain on the driver's side might have a tube to take water somewhere it won't cause corossion, like the ones from sunroof gutters.

That's what I am thinking. I certainly wouldn't be drilling a hole to let water run down and possible gather in someplace it could cause rust.

There is actually a drain pipe under the trim but not sure why VW thought it's a good idea not to provide a draining hole in the trim. I have cut a small rectangular hole with a stanley knife on mine to match the one on the drivers side.

The 3 clips hold them in place at the front, but the wiper spindles old them at the back. They can not be removed easily without taking the wiper arms off. Never had a problem with the one drain hole, the water soon drains when the car is level again. You even get a nice Ice Dagger in the winter down there to defend yourself. :grin:

Just use your pressure washer to drive the water to the existing drain hole. My driveway has a camber which means water collects on passenger side of the channel during the wash simply use the jet washer to drive it to the drain hole and it disappears. As well as the drain hole, the scuttle panel trim lip is also lower on the driver's side so more places to disperse the water.
