Title: Car failed to start. Sorted but now some other problems
Post by: I wanted a GTi on 02 March 2017, 21:18
Went to start the car tonight and it started but then immediately stopped with a message saying start car manually. I know I read about this on here a few weeks ago but I'll be ****** if I can find it now. I searched and even went back 10 pages but couldn't fine it.

Anyway I pressed the starter button(I don't know how to start manually in a keyless car) again and it took about 3-5 seconds before it fired up.

The car had been stopped for little over an hour and the temperature gauge was at 9 o'clock if that makes sense. Any help with this, second day of ownership and it could be better.

On a positive side, night blue looks bloody fantastic at night too. Love the colour and surprisingly I love the 18" wheels, the bridgestones on the other hand is a different matter.

Was this the discussion topic you were thinking of? (I did a search on 'start manually' in the mk7 section of the forum). Sorry, can't help you with your problem though!

Agree on the wheels; it's been said on the forum before that the 18" Nogaro wheels on the GTD are the nicest standard wheels on the warm/hot mk7 Golfs.

Thanks for the link but that wasn't the thread I was trying to find. Mine failed to start from opening the car, getting in and trying to start the car.

I don't think its anything to worry about. Have you keyless? I'm certain I've seen that message crop up at least a couple of times before myself when the car got itself into a tizzy, one example I can think of is taking off my seatbelt while start/stop was active (moving the car in a driveway), it would not auto restart again and I got that message. There's probably a bunch of events that can trigger it.

Don't think its a big deal. Drive on.

It happened to me last week, I took the key out of my pocket and pressed it against the dash , that worked for me I then just switched the pocket I had the key in and had no further problems.

I had my key in my right pocket with no change and my phone in my shirt pocket. I do have a door key and a barrier fob. I'll see if it happens again and then try separating the car key on its own. The keys were together the same when I had the loaner GTD and it never happened.

I'll have to wait and see.

Don't be concerned about this, it is just something that happens when the car gets it's nickers in a twist. I don't think it's even really a key related thing. When I've had it come up, it's been when I've stalled the car. (I know - it happens!) 9/10 times, the car just starts itself, but, occasionally, it will lose it's way and show the start manually message.

Obviously, if it becomes frequent, you will need to get it looked at, but, until then, don't worry about it!

Done it 4 times today and the last time it didn't even turn over but came up with a notice saying, 'could not detect key, place key by(I think steering column)' but the message was only up for like 2 seconds. I didn't take the key out of my pocket and I pressed the starter button again and it turned the ignition off and then pressed it again and the car started no problem.

Did battery maybe? I will use my wife's key from now until I go into the dealer's on Tuesday.

I think I have narrowed this problem down to the key/battery. I've been using the key I gave to my wife since last weekend and no problems. I have a few other problems with the car now.

1st problem is really annoying and it is with my phone. 40% of the time I make or receive a call it is distorted to the point both sides are inaudible. I have an iPhone 7 plus on iOS 10.2 and I've tried making both car and phone forget each other and and then set it up again. I've tried with my iPhone 7 which is also on iOS 10.2 and I've tried it on my android and windows phones with the same problems. Also when playing music over Bluetooth it often mutes for a second or so and then is fine until the next time. If I rewind the song and play the same point again it doesn't mute. All the music is downloaded so it's not a coverage problem.

2nd problem is rattles, one is somewhere behind my right ear on the B pillar an the other the passengers seat back. I've had someone in the back when I'm driving and holding the B pillar in different places and it still makes the noise although he can't hear it but I put that down to him spending years racing motorbikes. Had him sit in the passenger seat and move it about and it still rattles. We've checked the mounting points and all are tight.

I also have a question about the soundakotor in the car, how much of the noise I hear in the car is down to that in a car with the sound and sport pack? I've driven a GTD without sound and sport and I could literally feel the vibration from it in that car and it was horrible.

Not had the sound and sport pack, so I don't know how much specific adjustment you have with that, but the soundaktor can be almost silenced by putting onto the eco setting in the "Individual" driver mode. You can also disconnect it altogether, but I don't think that's necessary with it set to eco.

Which rattle, the one on the B pillar? I would never have thought it could be that. I will remove it tomorrow and try and see if it works. Thanks

Yup. But mechanic at Lookers Middlesbrough knew immediately what it was as a well know fault

Sorted out the rattle noise I had, it turned out to be the rear door cards at the top by the B pillar. Not sure if it is just my car but they seem to be badly designed because I can, on both sides push the door card in and they move serveral mm

If I push both in they stay quite until the rear doors are shut again. I'm going to put a little bit of packing in the gaps to see if that helps. The front seat rattle is a little harder to get to the bottom of.

I'm going to have to get the car booked in for the problem with the phone calls as it is getting to the point now where I can't trust it. Has anyone else had the problem with phone calls? It would really help if I had some info before going to the dealers.

Can you describe the phone call problem.

Also, what Phone (and IOS/Android version running on it), do you have a MIB1 or MIB2 unit in your Mk7 and can you show me the software version it is running? (the MIB unit)

I will just copy and past from the first page to recap.

Any help would be brilliant.

MIB1 or MIB2 head unit in the car? (if you don't know, if you have AppConnect (or the option for it) then its MIB2)

Go into the settings screen and grab the software version of the MIB unit too.

I suspect that your MIB needs a software update...

It's MIB2, it's a brand new car.

Ok, MIB2... but what software version is it showing?

Perfectly possible that you have a software version that has a bug... either that or the unit is faulty and needs replacing.

There were both problems with MIB1's early on...
