Sorry if this topic has been covered before, but I've been considering getting a dash cam.
From what I've seen they seem to be divided into two main camps. Those without a LCD screen (such as Black-Vue) and those with (nearly everyone else).
Whilst the ability to look at the footage immediately does appeal, I think I would like a more stealth approach so the smaller the better. My car has the camera for auto high beam (not lane assist) mounted behind the rear view mirror, so would appreciate anyone's thoughts on brands etc. but more importantly if anyone has any photos of their camera installed (both inside the car and outside preferably), so I can see what they look like.
If I did go for one with a screen (for instance the Nextbase ones from Curry's), it must have the ability to shut the screen off during driving as I'd image that would be a big distraction (especially at night). Also I would want GPS built in (not via a dongle), audio is optional (not sure I would have this on anyway), and obviously good quality night and day video quality. Oh, lastly the ability to hard-wire (I hate have wires dangling everywhere).
Thanks in advance.

I think Booth11 has a fairly nice and somewhat unobtrusive system front and rear.
-
I had a Nextbase Duo with front and rear. I liked it and it provided good field of view for front and had a zoom lens for the rear so you weren't focussing on the rear passengers. The biggest problem I had with it was that I got lots of "card errors" and that made it unreliable. Nextbase did say it was a firmware update and this was 6 months ago so may be fine again now.
I haven't replaced it since but would definitely consider one again in the future.
-
I have a Blackview front and rear for several years, very unobtrusive but very good quality. Easy to fit, no large sucker mount to get in the way just a sticky pad.
These are separate units not the twin ones that you can buy now but they require a cable connection between front and rear which is a pain. Separate units are easy to fit, front can be wired into the fuse box - or see link below - rear just plugs into the power socket in the boot.
Quality units and highly recommended.

Ive fitted a transcend unit which I stuck on with velcro to the front facing side of my rear view mirror. Its totally unobtrusive as I didn't want anything stuck to the window. The cable is run behind the window trim down behind the rubber door trim into the car to pick a supply up.

I'm sure I posted this previously but anyway this is what I did.The only advise is use proper Velcro from Halfords, the cheap stuff from Tesco is naff.

I have been using a Finevue CR500HD for nearly 10 years and the Wife has a Blackvue for the same time. Hate driving without the added security now. Neither have screens, bothe have permanent sticky pad mounts not the theif attracting sucker cup. Both have parking mode so they are basically on permanently.

Sootchucker, in short - get one.
I got one for Xmas (Nextbase 512G) - 6 weeks ago some little scroat basically veered into my TTS as I overtook him on a dual carriage way, causing 5 grand's worth of damage. I've only just got my car back. As the two little (unts got out of the car they started to have a go and the passenger started saying "my neck hurts" - I told them to stop right there, you're on dashcam, so you can stop with the bullsh!t as I've got the whole thing on camera, and it's all your fault.
Long story short, after he refused to contact the insurance company and ignored all their calls & letters, they settled in my favour as it was 100% his fault as he was driving like a proper c0ck, and they had it all on video. If it wasn't for the dashcam, it would have been my word against his, and we all know how those situations pan out. It's the best £150 I've spent in years, and has already paid for itself in this one situation proving my innocence and his guilt. Get one asap.
If you want to see the quality of mine, go onto my instagram (matchboy1976) as I posted it on there. Really, they're a life saver.
-
Just viewed your footage matchboy, Its good quality and a very good advert for a dash cam - you've all got me thinking now.....

I'm no techy, but I assume that the quality is downgraded when you upload to instagram - and it still looks great. Honestly, after what happened to me I will never be without a dashcam ever again.
-
The Nextbase 512g are £137.95 on Amazon.

I have a Blackvue DR650S 2 Channel dashcam (front and rear) fitted and am very pleased with it. Whilst the resolution on the rear could be a bit better it is fine. I like the ability to view via Wifi or the Blackvue Cloud. No regrets at all. I had it fitted by Blackview.
Part of the reason I chose this system was it small size and discreet appearance. From the driver's seat you can't see the front dashcam at all. The front cam had to be located to one side of the rear view mirror housing to avoid obscuring the High Beam Assist Camera, and avoiding the dotted area which needs to be kept clear, but it's a good spot for it.
Here's a few pics.

I got the Thinkware F770 front and back system for both the missus' car and mine. Front unit is pretty discrete - it has a slightly bigger footprint on the windscreen than the Blackvue650, but is still very subtle as it sits on the tinted area of the screen that shades the rear view mirror, and can be placed so as not to be seen from the driver's side.
It has Sony Exmor hardware and is full 1080P front and back, has built in car battery protection shut off modes (no need for a magic box) for when you're using parking monitoring.
I had the Blackvue 650 - it overheated in about a week's use (apparently a known issue), and the Thinkware's low light night footage quality is marginally better. Once you add a magic box, the BV650 is about £100 more than the Thinkware F770 (F770 RRP is £250 for the 2CH variant with hardwiring leads).

Absolutely no overheating issues with mine (been in since last Oct) or others I know that have bought them in last few months so maybe this issue has been resolved.

Have you been through a Summer with it yet? That'll be the true test although I think mine fried around Easter time, when it wasn't yet hot. SD brand card choices maybe to fault, or perhaps firmware version. Either way, right now it is a pricey proposition, seems the price of it has shot up since Brexit from lows of £230 when I bought my BV650.
For someone looking to buy now, the BV650 is not worth the extra £100 over the F770 for a slightly more subtle front cam and a lower res rear cam IMO.
Cheapest I can see the F770 for right now is £239 from http://www.cameracentreuk.com/thinkware/thinkware-f770-full-hd-dash-cam-front-rear-hardwire-32gb-kit-4637-646-6514.php (http://www.cameracentreuk.com/thinkware/thinkware-f770-full-hd-dash-cam-front-rear-hardwire-32gb-kit-4637-646-6514.php). I got mine on Black Friday for £209.
Cheapest I can see BV650 without a magic box (to allow parking monitoring is £259 from https://www.eglobalcentral.co.uk/blackvue-dr650s-2ch-2-channel-gps-wi-f-car-video-recorder.html#in_the_box (https://www.eglobalcentral.co.uk/blackvue-dr650s-2ch-2-channel-gps-wi-f-car-video-recorder.html#in_the_box), but you will need a magic box and possibly a hardwire kit - description unclear (cheaper than I thought I would find it , these were around £329 a few weeks ago). Potentially only £50 in it to get both battery monitoring.

I'm not disputing that yours had an overheating issue, but as yet I've not had any problems. As said in my earlier post I got it in Oct so fairly obvious that it hasn't been through a summer yet, but I can vaguely recall a few sunny warm days here and there and the unit did not heat up at all. It has been shown that some sd cards can cause it to run hotter but the one I'm using is not one of these. Will see what summer brings and if it overheats, you'll be the first to know, lol.
There is quite a lot of choice in dashcams and the Blackvue is certainly on the pricier end of the spectrum no doubt, but it's worth consideration. When I purchased mine it was via a Blackvue group buy I had set up elsewhere so there was discount and in fact I'm running a second one st the moment.
Another unit at least comparable to the Blackvue DR650S is the QVIA AR790, which has a better resolution rear cam than the Blackvue and no need for the Power Magic Pro box for hardwiring in and Parking mode recording as it is in-built. This had not been released when I was buying but it's another one to throw into the hat.
https://lukashd.co.uk/product/qvia-ar790-wd-2ch-dash-camera/
I have no doubts the Thinkware F770 is a good unit and it was originally on my shortlist but I didn't like the profile of the front camera, preferring the sleeker barrel unit of the Blackvue, but that's just personal preference.
Anyway I'm sure Sootchucker has lots of food for thought and will make his own mind up. One thing is for sure I wouldn't be without one, and I know of 2 people who have recently been involved in accidents who have dashcams and the footage has helped no end with their insurance claims.

I came across the Viofo A119 dash camera that looks pretty discreet.

I'm in the Blackvue camp, a DR600...apart from one firmware issue that arose near the end of the 1 year warranty that meant the camera had to be sent back to manufacturer for fixing, it's been a really good dash cam
Mine is forward facing only, and is pretty discrete tucked up high in the windscreen - hard to see it from the outside, and video quality is very good at full HD, 30 frames per second. I also bought a slip-on polariser to prevent glare on video when recording in bright and/or low sun conditions

Big thread on piston heads about dash cam recommendations, ive had one for a couple of years that was being recommended there and have wired it in to the fuse box and works great

Is anyone using a Nextbase 512g?? I can get one brand new for £130 which I think is a decent price, just slightly worried about the size of it and where to place it as I don't think it would fit behind the rear view mirror dude to the auto light sensors and high beam assist sensors

I have one in my TT. I have it suckered just behind the rear view mirror to the left, so I can see the screen but not too much of the sucker, and after a day or two you don't even notice it. It also has the anti-glare tech in that one so its crystal clear which is one of the reasons I bought it as there's no glare from the sun/oncoming traffic. It's not as big as you think, even with it attached to the sucker it's pretty discreet.
I don't have it hard wired however as I read that it can't be done that way on this particular model (could be b0llocks, but as it's my first dashcam I wanted to try it first before I hard wired, so that suited me) so I have it powered by the fag lighter socket.
Very happy with it and already has been well worth the money (see the other dashcam thread).

I've been watching this thread with much interest from the start and wondering if I should comment. Prior to getting my Mk4, I've always used my GoPro as a dashcam and whilst the results were always really good, it was a PITA to setup and remove for every trip, so I looked elsewhere.
I have been using a Papago set up in the VW for the last year or so and couldn't be happier...the camera is actually intergrated into the rear view mirror and is virtually invisible from the outside of the car...no need to take it with you when leaving the car unattended. The unit clips over the existing mirror and is actually a mirror within itself...I thought it looked a bit bulky and removed my existing mirrror glass (and surrounding trim) and it now looks quite neat and tidy. The mirror provides a slightly wider rear view than the standard Mk4 version which I find very handy. The viewfinder display is in the mirror itself and can be timed to be visible (or not) as you drive. It is GPS enabled and has all the goodies that one expects with a decent unit...it detects and reads standard speed limit signs and will shout at you if you're speeding...at the traffic lights, it will beep when the car in front moves off without you noticing. I use a 32gig card in mine, on continuous loop recording and retrieval of footage is a breeze..either on the mirror display, or later on the computer. Mine is hardwired, so only the card needs to be removed for permanent history.
I'll try and provide some links below...

And now some footage from mine...

Does that not interfere with the operation of the night time auto dimming?

No, it didn't - well my Mk4 GTI didn't, anyway.

Thinking about taking the plunge and am looking at the BlackVue DR-430 or DR-650S - 1 or maybe 2 channel options.
Think pretty much have understood the operation and feel comfortable with all the on road benefits and on the installation also,
But do have a few questions that hope can be answered that can maybe help me choose which one? or even push me to another brand
1. Parking Mode (Will have it wired with the magic box option)
Understand they will maybe capture bumps if its in either front or rear view.
But if someone smashes window and is captured, then what is there to stop them just ripping the camera off and actually selling it on?!
DR-650S has wi-fi and cloud capability but that would mean purchasing mi-fi for when out of the car, and not even sure it sends video straight to cloud in such circumstances, it just sends you a notification.
Imagine you tether to mobile phone when in car and that when cloud services have some use.
Obviously there is chance parking mode puts someone off (maybe put a cloud enabled sticker in window) or you actually do capture them as they leave the camera in their hurry, but is it really just a better than nothing option than complete security of at least catching the toe rag.
Basically, what is everyone experience with the cloud aspect on the Blackvue? Or are most of you really just interested in the on road benefits and anything beyond is just not as important?
2. GPS data, - is anyone concerned the data could actually be used against them, as there is an option to purchase the cheaper BlackVue DR 430 with no GPS, how essential is it? as surely visuals be enough and maybe you could be hurting own case by having the GPS data, maybe momentarily doing 33 in a 30 for example as had the bump?
3. Quality of the DR-430 compared to the DR-650S?
4. thoughts on rear view cameras, nice to have, not needed? or essential?
5 Other options, The nextbase duo is bulky and 720 and the nextbase 512g is 1080 but does seem quite bulky and could get a front and rear camera on Blackvue DR-430 for not much more in price
Leaning towards the DR-430 as like the styling and small footprint, to give me the on road capability but without GPS and basic parking mode capability and if can be convinced the image quality 1280×720@30fps is sufficient over the DR-650S 1920x1080@30fps
I can always add the GPS later on the DR-430 if felt missing on something
Its a bit of a minefield really, and my thoughts are from no practical experience at all, so any comments appreciated from those who have used are much appreciated.

Works brilliantly and is really small.
If I decide to just go for the basic functionality of decent quality images this could tempt me as not too much of a risk at circa £80 and reviews and quality are all pretty positive.
Do you just use the USB as power?
-
I have to apologise to you folk...the YT video I linked is really crappy! The RAW footage straight off the card is heaps better than what you watched.
Also, the muppet explaining the unit had no idea of how it really works...the cam is much more than just a unit to record traffic events...if you're on a road trip and see something interesting, landmark etc. and don't have time to pull over, or whatever...a click of a button and it will take great still pics (1080) as well. The GPS unit on mine needed a software upgrade when I first got it (about 5 mins on the laptop) and is surprisingly accurate...position, speed and altitude, as well as the normal date/time stamp can be imprinted on both video and still pics, if you so desire.
the camera can be set to 'auto' or if you're fussy, you can set it up anyway you like.
Sorry about that.... :embarrassed:

No I have a power supply that I've hard wired in. There is no cables visible apart from the very end which connects to the camera base.
-
As the others have said...no auto dimming on mine either.
My MK5, Mk6 and (soon) Mk7 all have dimming mirrors. So I doubt if that mirror/dash cam would be a good choice. Though fine if you have a Mk4 I guess.
That Viofo A119 looks interesting for the money.

Many thanks for your reply but I've decided not to get the 512g, we've just got rid of the laptops in our house and only have iPads now so wouldn't be able to put the memory card into anything to download footage.

That was exactly the issue I had too, as my mac doesn't have a sd card slot. You can still connect the 512g through the usb however, and view it via the Nextbase software. Note, it comes with a cd for this (is is the 90's?!) but you can get the software off their website. Hope you like it!

There is a new version for 2017 -A119S. People are saying it gives even better night time recording.
What are peoples' thoughts on GPS versions? Is it a good idea to have the speed recorded on video evidence?
-
I have the GPS viofo but only because the mount allows the camera to be plugged in at a better angle. I don't have the gps function running as I don't want to be tracked on where I've been.
I've also only got a small memory card so that it doesn't have days and days of footage of where I've been.

I've got one of these http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2016/11/2/dashcam-review-viofo-a119-simple-capable-capacitor-camera.html
Works brilliantly and is really small.
Have you got any pics of it in situ?
-
I have the GPS viofo but only because the mount allows the camera to be plugged in at a better angle. I don't have the gps function running as I don't want to be tracked on where I've been.
I've also only got a small memory card so that it doesn't have days and days of footage of where I've been.
You have a phone don't you? If they want to know where you've been they can tell can go back years.
-
I'm not bothered by that. I can remote wipe my phone if necessary. If someone takes off in my car it's impossible to hide where I've been and how long it took to get there.
I will sort some pictures of my installation.

Right, I get you now. I thought you meant you didn't want the police to know if they stopped you or something.

Ha I'm far from an international man of mystery, but some of my work locations are sensitive so I'd rather keep that private if I can.
Anyway photos:
I have the climate screen so it's quite reflective, the camera is not easy to see.

The lane assist box is quite large so I really wanted to get a small camera, I'm really pleased with the viofo.

Should you be recording visiting them via dashcam then?

I won't say anything if you won't.

You don't happen to do things to Samsung TVs do you

Thanks for that :afro:
It really is nice and small isn't it

If I decide to just go for the basic functionality of decent quality images this could tempt me as not too much of a risk at circa £80 and reviews and quality are all pretty positive.
Do you just use the USB as power?
No I have a power supply that I've hard wired in. There is no cables visible apart from the very end which connects to the camera base.
These threads are really useful as they buy you some time to think through what trying to achieve as well as what tech would fulfill that need.
Think what want to achieve is to just add some protection to the idiot moment while driving along, much like described in this thread.
GPS: Think the GPS is more of an intrusion than benefit as can readily describe, screenshot from map etc. location which would be ratified by any video captured. - agree?
Rear View Camera: Rear collisions are pretty clear cut so rear camera is more nice to have than essential - agree?
Parking Mode: Biggest dilemma, as can see the benefit for parking knocks, but view is limited.
Also in catching the toe rag who may want to break in but who will likely steal the camera! - Think nice to have but not essential. - agree?
Tech: The A119 does seem to tick what trying to achieve, a good quality image and a low profile, non intrusive camera (as images support)
couple of questions:
Do you use the motion detection at all?
What was the hardwired kit you used? seems a lot out there of suspect quality, so be nice to have a recommendation as do think this camera be best hardwired to ignition.
-
In response to your points -
GPS: I agree, it doesn't really add much anything that I want from my dashcam
Rear View Camera: I am thinking of getting a second camera to monitor the rear but I don't see the need to have it connected to the front. It's a lot of extra cabling for little gain. These cameras are pretty cheap and easy to wire in if you aren't afraid of taking your car apart a little bit.
Parking Mode: I've not got this, can see the benefit but it's not something I really wanted but it would be nice to have.
Do you use the motion detection at all? My camera is only live when the ignition is on. It has lane assist but as my car is fitted with that I turned it off.
What was the hardwired kit you used? I bought this kit from this seller http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIOFO-2K-HD-1440P-Car-Dash-DVR-Camera-Video-Recorder-Cam-GPS-5V-Park-Hard-Wire-/131924515268?hash=item1eb75059c4:g:HpMAAOSwCfdXo~CV It's been in for a number of months and I've not had any issues with it so far.
I hope these help you out

Stupid question alert...do you leave dashcam in your car overnight or not..just had one fitted today and don't know whether to put it in parked mode and leave in or take out.
-
Mine stays in the car permanently - for me the whole point of choosing a camera that has Parking mode and is hard wired in to facilitate such a feature - is to record incidents occurring whilst it's parked. I've had 3 lots of damage (all fixed) to my car whilst it's been parked up and one of he reasons I got both front and rear dashcams.
I think a rear cam is a must. The hit and run incident was to the rear of the car, as was a parking scuff and if I'd had a rear dashcam both would have been recorded.
The Blackvue DR650S 2CH I have had GPS cam but have disabled the speed recording. It has motion detection (for Parking mode) but I have that turned to a very low setting otherwise it picks up every tiny movement. Instead I have the G-shock sensor setting set high which is the sensor that detects an impact and records it.
I use a high capacity 128mb high speed micro SD card but mostly use the Blackvue app or cloud to view the recordings but nice to know I can download the contents of the SD card should I want to.
All in all very glad I got a dashcam and IMO an essential piece of kit in today's driving world.

The truth, sadly

Thanks for the reply Booth11, I didn't get a rear camera. The whole thing was a sort of impulse purchase when I realised the garage were taking off the pillar trim to try and cure my rattle. Thought I might as well get hard wired camera fitted at the same time by the garage to save the possibility of another rattle appearing if I had that done by someone else later.
I've taken it out tonight but I do feel I probably won't bother in future as I already have to fuss a little more due to the extra security measures I use now, don't want another car disappearing into the night....but then also don't want someone smashing the window to nick dashcam....dilemma.

Mine has been sitting in my cars screen permanently, but it has a permanent mount and not a cheap cop out sucker mount as they are thief magnets due to them looking like GPS mounts. Not sure why they still sell those terrible mounts, they look like a cheap afterthought IMO.
