Hi all,
I've had my GTI for a couple of weeks now and I'm loving it but now is the time for a bit of modding, I want to lower the car and add spacers, can anyone give me some advice on what springs to go for? I was thinking of a 35mm drop but is this a bit too much? It is a daily driver and I used to drop the kids off at nursery so don't want it to be too gangsta :) I was also thinking about spacers maybe 15mm on rear and 10mm on front? I had a set of H&R on my old S3 and they did the trick nicely so I was thinking about the same again?
Any advice is appreciated.

There a post on spacers with pics. Personally i think 35mm would sit right but you best seing if someone will come along with pictures because it might be to gangster for you
-
I'd agree that 35mm would give a great stance and H&R offer a set of springs with that drop. If you didn't want to go so low ST offer a 20mm and 30mm set and then Eibach also do 25mm/15mm springs as well.
For spacers I'd say 10mm front and 15mm rear but this is also something down to personal choice and how you want it to look.

I fitted 15 and 10mm spacers and wished I'd got 20 and 15mm ... but sold the 10mm ones no problem and now waiting for the 20s to arrive

I fitted a set of Eibach sportlines and whilst they are quite firm, I'd say they are ok for a daily driver (mine is). I like the sportlines as they give a slight bit of rake - you can get a bit of a look of 'reverse rake' if you lower the same front and rear but it's all personal preference.
Don't know if DPM stock them but due to some daft licencing deal (at the time), I could only find Sportlines for the Mk7 Golf at Larkspeed.

I fitted 25mm eibach springs on a previous car they were spot on all round weather solo or a full car no rub on arches
As for spacers loads of pics in various post's mine included I fitted 20mm and 15mm they sit nice and flush.
If your thinking doing both don't forget the lower and wider you go could result in wheel arch rub...
-
I hope the H&Rs on the GTI are better in terms of ride than they were on the R, for me Eibachs as whilst I never but them on first (except for the BMW as learnt my lesson) I have ended up with them
Never a fan of spacer only thing on a lowered car with spacers is if you drive it hard or go over speed humps you may well catch the front arch liner screws

You're right - whilst not done with spacers, I've fitted aftermarket wheels (19 x 8.5 ET 46) with 235/35 R 19 tyres and had to do the wheelarch screw mod on the front.

Yeah was just a thought for the guy iv got the standard 19 santis on with the spacers and tdh they do fill the arch well without lowering.
As I said iv been dun the lowering route before and it's not for me on the gti constant worries with grounding etc etc
-
35mm on the rear  is that not too low?? someone told me dont go more then 30mm on the rear as u will have some issues going over speed humps etc etc, so cause i was in two minds iv delayed getting my lowered to as I'm not sure what to go with my self lol :undecided:

You've answered your own question ' don't go lower than 30mm' your thinking 35mm!!
I would get your desired spacers fitted fully load your car with 5 mates see how low it sits and how close to arches the tyres are then decide how low you can go....
-
uh huh i see
well to be fair iv neve really had 5 mates in the car at once, maybe 2-3 max, plus they've got there own cars so yea, but yea 30mm sounds fair, but even that i was told u still have to be careful going over speed humps
thanks for the advice though matey

Looks decent !! is this with a 25mm drop??you will have to let us know how you get on with the bumps ect. I was going to drop mine 15mm to avoid any rubbing scraps ect.. but I really like the look of yours

The springs were a 30mm drop, heres a few more:

Spacers make a massive difference to the look :)
I haven't had any problems with rubbing but I'll report back when I've had them on a while. The ride is a bit firmer but overall I'm very happy :)

Looks good that does...

20mm on the rear and 15mm front and it's rubbing on the rear with passengers or even on a dip with a bit of speed
Need to take a wheel off to try to see where exactly it's rubbing ... anyone else got this ? Can I adjust the arches or will it be back to 15mm but I don't want that ...

You've gone too big. Mine are 16mm on the rear and no issues at all.
For an extra 4mm it's not worth the hassle.

The best thing with 20mm spacers is that you can use bolt-on type so you can still use the original bolts and covers.

Iv found a mate with a big enough lathe and we will adjust them down to17mm one day this week ....
A few people on here stated they were using 20mm with no issues .. but it's not working for me

I think 17mm will be just about perfect. Hope it works out for you

Here's a link to "willtheyfit.com" comparing my BBS wheels and your Santiagos with 17mm spacers. From a wheel point of view it's very close (0.7mm difference) but the extra bulge on the tyre might increase the chances of rubbing on the outer edge of the rears. Fronts should be fine too.
I'm lowered on Eibach sportlines so (at worst) you might need to change spacers again if you encountered rubbing once lowered.
