Title: rear brake discs need replacing on 2 year old GTI!!!!
Post by: wendys on 20 February 2017, 22:27
Hi,

have 2 year old GTI which has done just over 8,000 miles. Has been for its annual service and have been told it needs rear brake discs and pads replacing due to heavy corrosion which is not covered in the warranty and will cost £325.34.  Have contacted VW who says can't do anything about it and neither will the dealership.  Surely this is a safely issue with the car with so little mileage and its age.  I would appreciate any advice/suggestions.

Take the car to a non VW dealership garage that you trust, don't tell them what VW have said and just say that you want the brakes checking, see what they say. Looking at your forum name I'm guessing you are female?
If so some garages are notorious for ripping ladies off telling them that work is required when it isn't.
Also if you have bought the car on finance, you can seek redress via the finance company as 2yrs and 8K miles shows that the goods are not of reasonable quality. Good luck. P.S. citizens advice may also be of help.

IF they do need replacing, VW quote £265 for discs and pads

If the sub standard parts cannot be replaced under warranty, then they are not under warranty.

Get a garage to check them. If they do need replacing, consult your finance company about the cost of replacing. If they don't budge, take it to a local trusted mechanic. As long as the garage uses OEM parts then it won't affect your warranty. Getting any type of work done at a dealers is extremely expensive. Not only do they ask you to pay the price for the car, they want to charge you the earth for just maintaining it. If the car is still under warranty though, focus on getting the parts replaced under warranty. It's rather the dealers are trying to con you or the parts aren't fit for purpose.
