Hi all,
I used to post on here alot prior to buying my GTD 3-4 years ago, (I love it by the way!)
Now things have changed and its time to get a bigger car, I have a little boy and my wifes car needs changing (a golf mk5 tdi). I am going to keep my GTD as its brilliant on fuel economy and I dont see any reason to change it.
The question is do I go for a sensible car maybe a GTD estate or go for something that is a bit nippy.
My commute is 10 miles so its hardly anything, I am put off getting another diesel as there is so much talk about the government going after it.
I guess what I am asking, is what do people who own the Golf R estate think of the car, have they been happy with it?
I have to be honest I was not a fan of how it looks over the hatchback but I need extra bootspace, and i didnt want some slow SUV, so I thought the R estate would be perfect!
Are there any options that are must have, and is there much difference between the facelift and 7, aside from the looks?

How about a used Passat .:R36? Yes it's old and might cost a bit more to run, but it's rare, understated and will hardly depreciate. It will come with far more kudos than anything new that most people will assume is rented.

If your commute is only 10 miles and you would like heating in the winter months then get the R plus during that 10 mile commute the fuel economy will probably work out the same.
Another option would be a Skoda Octavia vRS, same engine as the GTi and looks better than an R estate at the rear but the new front is horrible but you can always park it nose in so you don't have to see it. Friend has the pre facelift model with a Milltek exhaust no apart from the dsg fart it sounds great.

I think that one is too much money, but given the mileage it is worth a slight premium. It's just the first example I found to remind people what a great looking car it still is.

Seen one in black southbound on the M1 J30 at 11:30 this morning. Looked nice and a real sleeper.

I enquired about a few and the dealers have been after me non stop I get the sense there are deals to be had, I think im going to hold off till March as people tend to change car around then anyway.

I didn't mean headed seats, I meant that the diesels take quite a while to warm up hence the reason they are bad on fuel if doing only short journeys and in turn the cars heating is slow to heat up.
I'm not a fan of the new front on the Skoda Octavia but I don't have anything against Skoda as a brand, times have changed.

Diesels take 10 - 12 miles to warm up fully in the current weather, and while they're arriving at a destination less than 10 miles away, you might be lucky to crack 40mpg. I could get 30-32mpg in my R over the same journey. Petrol mpg isn't critical to oil/engine temp - there is a benefit, but the difference between a hot and cold petrol for mpg is much smaller than for a diesel.

I was in the exact same position as you, and bought a used approved BMW 330D M Sport Touring. One of the best cars I've ever owned.
Ooooodles of space, great fun to drive, faster than my old golf, efficient, and looks awesome (in white) on the 19s. I don't normally like estates, but this to me, doesn't really look like one :)

I have heard good things about them to be honest, I was dead set on an SUV but recently I have been looking at estates. I',m the same I dont normally like estates but it maybe the best all round solution for what I need.
Just need to work out what I want!

I think you did the sensible thing.
If I needed an estate, VW would be the last place I looked as they are all ugly as hell!
The 3 series is about the best of the bunch in the looks department

the new 2017 seat leon estate come in 300 bhp 4 wheel drive . better looking than the golf estate :whistle:

I've been impressed with the R wagon, I was not fussed about the rear lights or fake exhausts as it purpose is the daily work horse, given mine is a rental it only has winter pack and apple connect
From behind the wheel I actually find it more fun than the hatch, its a little firmer than the hatch and does respond better with a bit of weight in the back and it has come in handy for flat pack and trips to the tip
The new Leon Cupra 300 is out but personally it is a car I would rent
I do have a hankering for a 3 series touring

I like that....no badge snobbery from me. I've had quite a few Fords in the past and with the exception of one of them being a Friday afternoon car, they were good.

What is your budget?? Are you looking at new or 2nd??
For the mileage you do I'd be looking at 2nd hand S4's....... the older model had a 3.0 supercharged V6. A cheeky remap takes that from 333bhp to 400bhp :evil:
Equally get something like me A6 3.0TDI Quattro or a 330d or if you can find a good one a 335d :smiley:

Agree with all of that.
I looked at an A4 but in reality it offered very little extra interior space so for a few quid more I ended up in A6 with a lot more toys, better engine etc etc even though it was a year or so older.
For the price of a new Golf R estate there are a lot more interesting and practical cars available as long as you are willing to look at the 2nd hand market :smiley:

One of the big problems with something like the 9 year old Passat is the £500 pa road tax and potential out of warranty running costs.
Although I run older cars and am now out of warranty on the Golf, the Passat is a good reason to buy newer!

As I said in my earlier post, the minimal depreciation takes cars of all that. Man maths will show that buying/financing/renting a new car over 2/3 years will cost less than an older, less efficient older car. However the reality is, if you choose the right used car, older can be cheaper as well as a lot more fun. We are supposed to be car enthusiasts after all, but so many take the easy option.

He'll get a lot more from his diesel than he will from the petrol. My commute is 11 miles and I could see 50+mpg in the GTD if driven correctly. With the R and driven the same I'm lucky if I hit 30.

Swings and roundabouts isn't it, either they look a you driving a brand new R and think you're renting it, or they look at you driving a 12 year old car and think you're skint. Neither assumption would bother me, nor do I really want to believe people go around occupying their minds with such daft thoughts.

Sure, I have a similar view, the only part we differ on is I don't see the over priced, over taxed Passat estate as the "right" car to back that view.

My budget is around £25-£30k, because i dont do many miles I wasnt thinking about diesel this time round. I have a GTD and its brilliant been very happy with it, that will still be kept we will be getting rid of my wifes car so I was thinking I didnt need a diesel. However from the looks of things there are good diesels out there.
For the s4 what age are we talking?
I guess the reason I was thinking the golf r estate was I could have one that is practically new so would have warranty etc, its more piece of mind if anything.

What I like about the R estate is in some ways its only true competition is the Leon Cupra, VW have never made a GTI Estate and whilst its not the biggest estate on the planet what I love is it still drives like a hot hatches nimble and fun and it does catch people out as it is more under the radar, for me in many ways it makes more sense than the hatch as in reality I would now go for the GTI or something a bit more driver focused
Do I care if people know its rented, not really as i would never buy a R again given the poor residuals, I am a lot happier with renting the R and the money from the sale of the 3 door sat in the bank
The 3 series touring is not huge but I have to admit its a nice place to be in
P!ssrat R36 has quite a cult following but for me you are just buying an engine

Having re-read it, I guess it is a strange statement, and it doesn't matter a bugger how someone pays for a car, but surely a car enthusiast, whether it be the owner or onlooker, would appreciate a more interesting car as opposed to another 'white good'.

Most traders wouldn't want a car like that in stock as it has a very niche market, hence the low book value. I am a member on a couple of Passat forums and when these cars do come up for sale, nice cars will sell for prices north of £10k. More often than not, private sales too.
I'm not saying that the Passat should be the car for the OP, but it is an example of what else is out there.

My wife had a Passat estate from the same year as the one being mentioned and it had one of the poorest quality interiors I've ever seen on a VW.
You would, as mentioned earlier, be buying a 9 year old engine ( albeit a good one ) with a sh!t body attached :smiley:

Not bad I would in all honesty want something newer, when I look at the s4 estate I just think of the rs4 instead
