Title: Drinking Pertol
Post by: bsides on 12 February 2017, 13:14
I've a 2010 Golf GTi, and about 57000 miles its suddenly started drinking petrol.
I've had the alignment done and it has 4 new tyres. I'm thinking it maybe the coolant sensor but i really  don't have a clue.
I was getting about 42 mpg and now i'm luck of its over 35mpg and was going to take it to VW but thought it maybe something simple that goes at this type of millage.
If anyone could help i'd be really grateful.
Thanks!

I'd take it to dealer/garage and get it checked for fault codes.

Of course it will, simply because the engine takes more time to reach it's optimal operating temp.

Try this...

Instead of coming outside to the car...starting  up and driving away as soon as the motor starts.....

.....start the motor, have a walk around, check the tires, clean all your windows, including the headlight, indicator and rear light lenses...in other words, let the motor warm up...it will make a difference.

Before I get bounced on by those who think they know better...I live in a country where the winter temps can, and often do fall below minus 20 degrees. Summer temps are often up around 40 degree

My Mk 4 Golf tdi gives me an average of 4.5 litres per every 100 kms, for the whole year...and I drive it like I stole it!

Just warm it it up, before you drive it.

^^^^^^^^ Cobblers.

Doing that will mean that you have a warmer, more efficient engine when you start driving, but you will have used more fuel getting it warm in the first place. An engine will warm up faster under load, so get in it and drive straight away.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I've been to my local VW dealer and they say its misfiring and there're keeping it for more tests?
Does this mean it could be big trouble?
thanks

To be honest it could be absolutely anything. Taking it to the dealers was the best decision. Once it has been plugged in the fault(s) can be read and the problem sorted.

My gut feeling would be that your fault is nothing major

Keep us informed

Its down to driving type and driving style. Ive averaged 33mpg over the past 7 years and always got 10% less when ever ive drove a DSG so unless you see a drop in your own personal average I would say nothing to worry about.

Probably just a spark plug or coil pack.

Okay... it turns out it needed a new injector, which they have fitted for me @ £380.00 with the original diagnostic charge been waived.

It seems like they've looked after me??

If the car is working fine and you're happy then that's all that matters.

Dealer prices will always be higher but if it's all sorted then alls good in the world.

Straight back to the dealer it goes!

They believe by replacing the initial injector this may have forced another one to pop which subsequently will now need replacing.

So I could potentially be £700 down and my car still drinking as much petrol as it did when I first brought it in??
Help ME !!!!!

I can't grasp the logic to that. Alternatively, the injector they replaced wasn't faulty and has been done for no reason.

Sounds like a mis-diagnosis to me

It's very rare that one would go pop straight after another.  Did they even road test the car as going by your description it sounds like the light came back on about 30 seconds after you picked it up!
