Title: Extended test drive / Hire car for the day (GTI PP / R)?
Post by: brown.jamesa on 11 February 2017, 14:55
Hi,

As the title says, has anyone had any luck with getting an extended test drive of either a GTI or R from a VW dealer?

I am finding it hard to make my final decision and think having each car for 24 hrs so I can use it as I would my own car help me nail down which one is really for me.

If no one has had any luck with getting an extended test from from VW, does any know of a company I can hire each car from for the day?  Dont mind paying to hire, as I don't want to spend 30k + on car I am not 100% sure on.

Cheers
James

I looked into hiring an R before I bought mine as like you I wanted to have it for a a longer period and drive it like I would normally. I couldn't find any anywhere.

I got a few suggestions on a thread in here but unfortunately they didn't lead to anywhere.

The closest I could get was an Audi S3 from Avis~Prestige. It was more the DSG side I wanted to try out.

I bought both my Rs without even seeing them, never mind test driving. Haven't looked back

It probably depends what they have as demonstrators, staff cars or second-hand stock. Though they will probably want to keep second-hand cars on the forecourt.

The dealer where I bought my car and get it serviced - gave me demonstrator GTD with only a few miles on it, for a few days. My wife also had a new Mk7 Golf demonstrator for a day. Audi loaned her an A3 for a day also.

I know it is going to be more difficult getting an extended test drive in a GTI or R. Though I'm sure dealers can tell the difference between genuine buyers and time wasters.

If it makes you feel any better, I started paying for my Clubsport 2 months ago and haven't even seen it yet let alone collected it..

I think you can rest assured you can't go far wrong with a golf Gti.

Could try VW CS and ask them that you want extended test drive period, and maybe they will put you in touch with a dealer that could accommodate you?

Cheers for all the advice guys and it good to know I am not the only one who has been in this situation

@a9wyn, great idea, I will contact them Monday and see what they can do.

@drisser, wow, thats seems a bit strange to me, handing the full balance over before collecting the car.

@kalimon & @falconmick,  :smiley:

@Daz Auto, hopefully contacting VWCS will help

@NewCsS, They are a bit out my way, but cheers for the link

@p3asa, cheers for the recommendation

@madmark63, think I am leaning towards your way of thinking , so may end up waiting for the 7.5 GTI PP and ordering on May the 4th

Hi James,

I am sure if you agree a price and place a deposit with a dealer they will make things happen for you.

Where abouts are you based?

Regards,

Lee

I just noticed that you also drive a Mk6 GTD. So I am in exactly the same position as yourself.

The GTI PP and R were also top of my list. Reviews don't help as a lot of them conclude that the GTI is very good, but the Golf R is simply the better car - and no doubt it is!

However, some of the reviews hint at the GTI being the better daily driver due to less turbo lag, smaller turning circle and less weight resulting in sharper, more responsive steering.

There have also been a few issues with the Golf R. Early models had turbo problems. A few people have had issues with the manual clutch slipping. Also there have been issues with the hadlex clutch pump which mean that people have had a 300hp front wheel drive car  Though hopefully all these issues will have been fully resolved with the Mk7.5 :undecided:

I have decided to buy a GTI PP. One of the main reasons is because I have never had a Golf GTI before. Also, it should be a nice improvement in performance over the Mk6 GTD.

... and the money saved can go towards a Mk8 Golf R.

Think I will go down the GTI PP route and upgrade to the R in maybe 3/5 years time

Gonna try and organise one more test drive of the GTI PP to make sure tho

I'd always look to get the test drive before I committed myself to buy via deposit (except when I bought the GTD blind, but I knew I wanted THAT car) - if you're undecided between 2 then your dealer should get you a test drive in both without commitment.

i bourt my last gtd blind it was a 2015 the car was great apart from the ride was so hard in the end this made me sell the car as it didnt have the dcc
i then went to a golf match that 125ps 1.4 engine is great and does go well but it just wasnt me and i needed the extra bits the gtd had so i bit the bullet and bourt a new gti
so far i love it but i havnt used it much as i am allways working and dont get time to go anywere but i have noticed so far the car rides much better than the gtd even in normal setting ,i think the gti is a real good allrounder dont get me wrong if the R was the same price i might of bourt one but for me i need to keep my licence if i can so the R would of been to qwick for me ,the good thing is clarkson loves his gti and if he says its good it but be very good
the only other downside for me is i wanted a carbon grey but had the have a black one but i am getting uesed to it
