Hi All, 1st time poster but been lurking for a while since I purchased my 63 GTI PP back in April. Looking for a bit of advice if possible. My car is on 19" Santaigos which seems like a big mistake for me now. The single road into my village is strewn with potholes. About 4 weeks after getting the car I hit a pothole at about 30mph which blew the front nearside tyre out instantly. The car was on crappy cheap Chinese rubber so was a good excuse to upgrade to Michelin Pilot Super Sports which Kwik Fit had on good deal at the time. When fitting, the 4th tyre would not seal and it was apparent an alloy was buckled. I managed to find an alloy wheel repair company who fixed the buckle whilst I waited and they also found a smaller buckle on the rear where I had gone over the pothole. The same thing has happened to me tonight, I hit a pothole going no more than 15mph approaching traffic lights in the same unlit road. Great swapping to the spacesaver in the sleet but I did have my daughter with me and we had a torch. Apart from chopping the car in which I don't really want to do as i will loose a lot of money, I was thinking of getting 18" alloys and quite like the look of the Racingline wheel at Awesome GTI
https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-brand/racingline-performance/racingline-8j-x-18inch-alloy-wheels-satin-graphite-grey/
or something from OZ but I am probably looking at about £1800 with tyres.
Does anyone know if running 18" would give me more protection ? A couple of cars ago I did have a MK2 TT on 245/45/18 and never had this problem but maybe the road is worse now ? TIA

You'd be better of getting a second hand set of Austin 18" wheels and tyres and selling your 19" santiagos.
In fact you'll probably be a few hundred quid up.
I've also managed to buckle a Santiago alloy, found out when I was getting them refurbished and powder coated
I'm running 18" MSW type 19 wheels with winter tyres at the moment and I like the more comfortable ride.

Your question is something I'd like to know the answer to having been told I have 2 buckled Santiagos today  Those wheels look great but there are plenty of alternatives at a more reasonable price, just depends on your budget. Mine are still useable so I'll stick with them for now but it might just be a matter of time as my local roads are getting really bad
-
Welcome RDC.
Santiagos do seem to be buckle prone going from people's experiences on this forum, which is a shame as they're lovely looking wheels.
Have a look in the classifieds as Cossieian is selling one or two (take your pick!) sets of very similar wheels to those in the AwesomeGTI link for considerably less money.
I ran a different set of 19" wheels to the OEM Santiagos on my GTI but also suffered a low speed blow out and buckle on a pothole. I think it might be something to do with the rear suspension of the GTI/D 2wd cars being unforgiving when it comes to sharp impacts even at low speed.
When I hit similar bumps, gulleys, cracked Tarmac or potholes in my R there was less of a noisy suspension crash from the rear of the car and the wheels and tyres survived completely unscathed.
A month ago I drove a GTI and GTD back to back and both hit a bit of cracked Tarmac with a sharp crash from the suspension which my R drove over with just a dull thud.

Thanks for the advise so far and 2nd hand wasn't something I had considered. May go down that route if I see something I really like. When tightening the wheels last night the wrench slipped off one of the locking wheel bolts and I think I may off knackered it and rounded off the bolt as the locking wheel nut wont grip
By coincidence the car is booked into VW for a DSG service 1st thing today so hopefully they can sort. I also have a spare Santiago which I picked up cheap on Ebay after looking regularly on there after the 1st blow out, so hopefully can get that fitted.
I suppose what I really need to know is if anyone running 18's has had similar blow out problems or is not going to make much difference. 18" tyres are a hell of a lot cheaper with more options and more readily available.
-
Best thing to do with locking wheel nuts is to take them off and throw them in the bin
Had a similar situation last year and had to take car to a local tyre centre so they could use air gun to remove locking nuts, once removed threw them straight in the bin
As Mr EX mentioned I have similar wheels to above in 18s, 1xset in Gloss Black, 1xset in Satin Black.
Both sets come with Michelin tyres
-
I had a similar issue with a locking wheel nut on a previous car I couldn't loosen and was afraid of it slipping and rounding the nut off. Took it to my local tyre place. He put a long bar on it and applied pressure, while someone else kept hitting the socket with a hammer at the same time. This worked for loosening it. I then applied copper grease to all of the wheel bolts...

That is where an impacter tool is helpful.
A lot of problems with locking nuts come from the locking nuts being torqued the same as the other nuts.
-
Well the VW dealer was able to sort out the damaged wheel locking nut easy enough. A couple of the pins in the locking nut were slightly bent, the mechanic was able to straighten them out.
Took the damaged wheel to a local tyre indy. The tyre had a pinch type hole in the wall so that ruined that. The wheel has a slight buckle so I have ordered a mid price tyre and will use as a temp spare. They think the tyre will seal to the rim and I will get the rim repaired when I have time.
Cossieian thanks for the heads up for your wheels but would prefer a grey or anthracite set which I think would suit my pure white car better. Seen some BBS SR in grey for about £750 plus tyres, I'll probably go down that route.
-
The BBS SR's are a lovely wheel..
-
I like the BBS XA and AEZ Raise wheels, have a bit of the Santiago about them plus the angular look is more in-keeping with the MK7 design in my eye. Very modern.

Not biased or anything
-
Managed to hit a pothole on my 19" BBS SR's - blew a front tyre and a tiny nick out of the alloy.
Without putting a curse on it, they look to have stood up well with no buckle/structural damage. Just waiting for a tyre to arrive - luckily got a full size spare.
Lowered as well which doesn't help lol.

I told my dealer that the standard GTI/GTD suspension was too firm for the terrible roads we drive. He told me that the Golf R seemed to have more forgiving suspension. The Golf R must have a different suspension setup.
However, I don't want a test drive in a Golf R as it may change my mind about getting a GTI PP :undecided:

So I bit the bullet a bought a set of 18" BBS SR alloys with Goodyear F1 3's from Wheelbase Alloys. Wheels turned up in a couple of days and I had them fitted yesterday.
They are a lot easier to clean than the 19" Santiagos and I have coated them in Gtecniq C5 to help with cleaning.
So far the ride seems much better than the Santiagos though not hit any potholes yet, touchwood.
They do show up my rusty brake discs more so need to get that sorted soon, and probably look better with lowered suspension but don't think I'll go down that route.
so far pretty please though

Looking nice and they really suit the white car. What are you going to do with your 19"?
-
They look really good
-
Nice wheels. BBS SR's really suit the mk7 and the anthracite wheels / white paintwork is a nice contrast.
-
Thanks, going to keep the Santi's. They do need a refurb as each wheel has various degrees of minor damage. I think when the time comes to sell or part ex it would be easier with oem wheels.
Might use the Santiagos as a summer wheel eventually.
-
 They look awesome
I like the close up in the first pic, very nice indeed and makes me even more eager to get mine fitted.
Stunning

Sorry RDC
But yeah I know, 10 more painful days. and you just know there gonna go slow.....

I like those BBS wheels but having tungsten silver it may be a bit much and I think I'd lose the colour of the wheels against the car.

Na...I think the SR's would look stunning on any colour MK7 but then I would say that...
Have a google and see if there are pics out there with tungsten and SR combo, I'm sure there is.
Go on you know you want to...

Hope you don't mind RDC but seeing your pics of the SR's fitted yesterday it really made me want to wax mine again. Obviously it was to kill time too.
So here they are with the wax on them. There's no pics of them all buffed up as I didn't have time to take pics due to me having to pick my little man up from nursery but rest ashored they are.

Even with them pictured not buffed up they still look like a awesome looking wheel.
That's just my biased opinion.

Biased opinion or not Mr GTD, I agree; they are a really nice looking wheel, and they'll be really easy to clean too. Just need the car now to put them on . Not too much longer to wait though!
-
^^^ Yes I found waxing them a doddle so cleaning them shouldn't be any bother.
-
Looking good Mr GTD. I thought I would be all legit and rang my insurance company One Call, to inform them of the change. I currently pay about £500 full comp per annum and they wanted to increase my premium to over £1000 !!!! They also said there would be a cancellation charge of £50 odd if I were to cancel. I went to a insurance comparison site and found a similar rate to my original insurance spoke to them and no extra for aftermarket wheels. Now cancelled with One Call but there saying the cancellation charge is now £160 which I am disputing the bunch of tos**rs.

An additional £500 premium is taking the p!55. When I changed the wheels on my mk6 GTD my insurer didn't charge an additional premium. When I changed them on my current car (Polo GTI), the same insurer charged me an additional annual charge of £18.
Insurers are entitled to charge an admin fee for cancellation, but the fee must be 'reasonable' in relation to the work they need to do to cancel your insurance. IMO, £160 is not reasonable and I'd be asking them to justify it. The cost to them of processing your cancellation must be significantly less than £160. I'd also check the small print in your policy document to see what it says regarding mid term cancellation and admin charges; I suspect it'll be quite non-specific and say they are entitled to charge an admin fee without stating what the fee is.

Thanks
That's a crazy amount to charge esp as you went down a inch.
Hope you are successful in your dispute.
