Noticed a strange humming/whirring type noise this morning and also this evening coming home from work. Was out all day in car yesterday and never noticed a thing. Can't tell if it's cold tyre pressure related or even maybe a climate control fan. Does anyone know what the pp diff would sound like if it had no oil?? Outside temperature was 1 this morning and 1.5 coming home.
-
Was the noise only there when moving and did the pitch vary with speed? I had a small stone trapped between one of the brake callipers and the disc once and that made a row.
-
Hum seems to get noisier with speed. It's a bit like when you drive on fresh tarmac just after it's been laid.
-
Dare I say check the tyre pressures and what does the tread look like? Are they wearing evenly?
-
Pressures were checked earlier this week and both fronts look ok. Cars only got 1400 miles on it.
-
Chris,
Have a look around the wheel arches, maybe one of the plastic liners are loose?
-
Going to have a quick check at lunchtime. Hope it's just tyre pressure and the cold weather and not the diff!
-
Or a wheel bearing failed prematurely
-
Sounds wheel bearing related. If roads permit turn steering and see if noise goes away
-
Went out at lunchtime and turned wheels lock to lock to see if anything looked funny. Could see bugger all in the snow! Drove home tonight and wasn't exactly certain it was humming but did notice temperature was above freezing. Think I'll check tyre pressures tomorrow and maybe pop along to my local tyre place and see if they can spot anything untoward underneath.
-
Does it sound like its coming from below and as you accelerate...?
Red
-
It just sounds like tyre hum but only seems noticeable at around 40mph.
-
Could be rear wheel alignment? I've got the same noise and told its rear wheel tracking.
-
Chris: You got the wrong car - paid for a GTI and ended up with a Hummer!
Best get it back in for warranty if it's not a wheel bearing, there's nothing rubbing in the wheel arches, and it is speed (not gear) dependent, it probably is wheel alignment. Check out the inside and outside rims of your tyres - just in case you have a sidewall bulge already.
-
Been to local tyre place first thing and has the car up on the ramp. Nothing untoward to be seen so checked the tyres and they are fine also. The tyres all look square with no bulges but they did say they've had two other gti's with Bridgestones on in the last fortnight with same complaint. I think the problem is more temperature related with the bridgestones but I'll wait to see what happens when the temperature rises (hopefully it will at some point this year ) and if the problem gets worse I'll book it in to get wheel bearings checked.
-
Chris: Temp will have to rise a lot to see a big improvement in the Bridgestones. They're hard at the best of times, but they get a lot harder and grip drops off noticeably below 10C. For most non winter tyres that's 4C before performance drops off.
-
Yeah but I'm too skint at the minute to be able to change them out for Michelin 4s

When you have the money, it'll be the best £400 you'll spend on the car. I don't regret spending the £600 on mine, I just bemoan the fact it was needed because I lost out on the VW tyre lottery twice on MK7s.
If/when you are ready to buy, I can get you in at Costco Gateshead one weekend.
-
Yeah that'll be good Matt cheers. Maybe should have bought some winter wheels and then wouldn't have noticed haha. They do seem fine in normal temperatures or at least when warmed up.

This is one of the reasons I put winter sport 5's on standard rims for the winter the ride and temp drops they seem spot on for the ride and handlings not too bad.
don't get me wrong the 19 inch santis with P zeros on were ok but aswell as the ride wanted to protect the rims from salt etc etc etc roll on the spring wen I put them back on

Definitely think this is wheel bearings now. Noise is getting worse and outside temperature had made no difference to tyres (balmy 8° here today). Booking in tomorrow.

Mine is getting really loud now too, not due to go in until next Tuesday but I called the garage to say I thought it now a potential safety issue so I'm going to try and get it in either tomorrow morning or Friday. That and my dangling door mirror  - not a happy camper.

Anyone in the north east got either two spare 18" wheels or a set so I can at least change over the front wheels on my Gti before the dealer starts changing wheel bearings. It would just be for 10 minutes and then I can rule bearings out and change tyres. Can't think of another way to to check. Do we get full size spares or just crappy space savers?
-
Chris - We get space savers. Th e Bridgestones are a bit noisy, as they are rock hard, but considering the miles on your car, if the noise has gotten worse rather than being just as bad from delivery to now, that won't be the tyres unless your tracking/alignment is absolutely miles out to cause rapid development of an abnormal wear pattern.
-
Got a work colleague with a gtd so I'm going to borrow his spare and put both on the front of mine. This should eliminate tyres and confirm it's wheel bearings. If the hum goes then it's hello Michelins
-
Put two spare tyres on the front and the noise is still present so I can virtually rule out tyres. Likely to be now either wheel bearings or diff of maybe even gearbox.
-
I seem to be having similar issues, did you get a resolution for this in the end?
-
Our A3 had a noise like this. It sounded like there was a plane flying above the car. I thought it might be the tyres. I once had a similar noise caused by a flat spot on a tyre. So we had the winter tyres fitted and the wheels balanced. The Audi garage thought it was a wheel bearing. It turned out to be the 7 speed DSG dry clutch. Thankfully, it happened under warranty.
-
Had a front wheel bearing changed and noise gone.
