Title: Shock absorber leaking at 26k!
Post by: mistertee on 30 January 2017, 15:00
Hello all,

I've just picked up my GTi after some new tyres and I've been advised that a need a new shock absorber.  I've seen the video and it is leaking, but at £370 it's bit of surprise for a 3 year old car that's only done 26k.

Anyone else had problems with this part?  I'm going to try the warranty or some good will, most shocks I've had have lasted over 50k!

Thanks

You'd expect a good few more miles than that so a goodwill gesture should be forthcoming so long as there's no signs of other damage that they could use to wriggle out of it such as bent wishbones etc which could have been from hitting a huge pothole or kerb at speed.

I had a leaking rear shock absorber on my mk6 GTD at 2 years old / approx 16k miles. Replaced under warranty.

Had mine go on my old mk7 - nearer to 60k miles thou but still covered under warranty (car was well under 2yo then).
Hit a pothole hard?

No, it's the rear so unless I backed over it really quickly then I can't say that it's anything I've hit.  Everything else under the car is fine.

The current state I'm in is that they are going to see if I'm covered under warranty.  However, even though I bought the extended warranty through VW (drive the deal) so I thought it was a factory option there appears to be no record of it.  Luckily I've found the original invoice.

Hopefully you can work something out on the goodwill warranty front.

If and when I have to replace shocks on mine I will fit Bilstein B6, considered an upgrade and can usually be found at a favourable price compared to the stock item.

Usually its misting on the shock which is normal. I had a dealer try this on with my mk6 GTD (low mileage somewhere between 20-30kunder warranty), took it to a second vw dealer they said it was fine. Did 80k and never had any issues even after 2 mot's.

All sorted now.

It's covered by my manufacturers extended warranty, so I'm happy with that.
