Title: Newbie needing advice
Post by: Lensey on 27 January 2017, 12:45
Hi all, I'm new to the forum, I've had a few GTi's in the past, Mk1, 2 x Mk2's & Mk4 so true to say I like the brand :)  I'm currently looking at trading our A1 up to a MK7 GTi, I went to look at this one in Sawston VW

http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-GTI-230-PS-DSG/Cambridge/3708610-605938485-42149.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_

But ended up liking this one better:

http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-GTI-230-PS-DSG/Cambridge/3708610-606119449-42149.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_

After going away and looking for similar spec'd car, this one has DCC, Keyless entry, sunroof, car-net-app etc, I couldn't get anything spec'd the same, cars that had some of the specs, mainly keyless entry car-net and lower miles were priced at about 24-26k.  If this car was up for between 25-26 I think I would've bought it by now but I can't get over the fact its £26990 with 9k miles.

My question is, do people think they are asking too much for it or with the options is it reasonable?

Lensey, I don't live too far away from Cambridge, I can tell you from experience (both buying and selling) that the dealers there are tight as a7seholes, their prices are inflated and they just don't budge with discounts.  Hence why I've never bought or sold a car from them!

My advice would be to give Steve Surridge a call at Lancaster Letchworth - I've bought & sold a few cars off him and he's really good, and he's more realistic in terms of price and discounts.

You might be lucky and find a dealer still has these on order and able to change to your specification.

I've just specced up a 5dr DSG sunroof, car net app and DCC and it comes to £25,591 from https://www.drivethedeal.com

I wouldn't pay what they are asking for a car with 9k miles when you can get a brand new one for cheaper!!

Not possible anymore. All pre facelift models are made or passed the point of being able to change the spec.

Thanks guys, my Mrs called the dealer in Chelmsford and they have a some cars on order, going to have a look through them tomorrow and see what specs etc, they are giving a £3250 discount, I could get a new one for a little bit more than the one in Sawston!  Think they are going to have trouble selling that one :)

Next question, what are peoples thoughts on 18' v 19' wheels?  I like the look of the 19's but do the 18's drive better?

£3250 is a VW discount, nothing from the dealer in there!  Use CarWow to get some comparative quotes, and then canvass a few local dealers.  I got over £5k off list.

You can get more than that dude.  Carwow & Drivethedeal are your friends!

Sawston are awful - but they do sell cars as it's an area whereby people have a few quid and therefore don't care about a few grand here and there.  I once went there for an R and they offered me 0% discount   Suffice to say I didn't order from them!

I had 19's on both my GTI PP and R, and they rode just fine (without DCC too).

Sorry, I wasn't clear about that, they did say VW are giving £3250 off, they did say they were offering more deals by taking their finance etc but I'm not interested in all that, thought I would see if there are any cars I like then try and push the dealer for a discount. I've never used carwow or drive the deal so I will have a look at those sites

You'll get a better discount by taking the vw finance and then you can pay it off a few days after getting your car. The 3250 might be dependant on you taking the vw finance.

Look on carwow dealers are quoting same price for cash as finance because VW have cut price don't think there any deposit contribution are available now. Some cars on carwow advertised for £21500 and £22000 basic spec . .

Well, I went into Chelmsford and I got offered a £35k GTI for £31k, didn't really press anything further as I was a bit taken by the Clubsport they had in the showroom :)  The one in the showroom was a three door but they had a five door that had been delivered.  The five door didn't have buckets but they can get hold of one with them, price wise was about £35k without any discount and they are not allowed to discount them.  Am I mad to spend that sort of money when GTi's have got such good discounts on them?

If you can find one you could pick up a low spec R for £27k.

I know where I'd rather park my money.

GTI's are great value right now if you're just going for absolute basic spec and can get one for sub £23k. There are a few in the system still (just a few mind you) but not for much longer as they've all pretty much been built now. 7.5 production is ready to roll very very soon so 7's are just about finished.

stay glued to the VW used car search. I picked up my GTI PP DSG 3 door for 20,999 with 5800 on the clock.

That doesn't give me a lot of confidence in retained values

I know what you mean. I commented on signing for it that it was a bargain he said it was'nt his decision!

Well I decided to go for a cheaper GTI, got a good deal with VW Ipswich and pick it up on Saturday :)  My thinking is I'll keep an eye out later in the year if any clubsports come up although I really enjoyed the test drive so hopefully I'll bond with the GTI.
