Title: Mk7 golf fuel costs?
Post by: Davey2017 on 05 January 2017, 20:20
Hi all new to forum an maybe going to ask the most daftest question ever, looking to purchase a 6month old mk7 golf gti non performance pack, I just wanted to know some realistic mpg figures and how many miles people are generally getting to a tank of fuel? I'm currently driving a 2008 Mini Cooper s getting around 35-38mpg and 350 miles to a tank any help would be appreciated

Depending on your driving I reckon you'll see similar to your Mini. I've the PP on my GTI and see 36 to 39mpg average with a lot of town driving, some spirited country road driving and the occasional 150 mile motorway slog. Up to around 40mpg for the long motorway jaunts at around 75-80 indicated mph

Edited to say, I get between 350 to a touch over 400 to a tank

Mine averages 35mpg . Motorway journeys see 40mpg especially if on average speed camera infested roads ! I run mine on higher octane fuel but not sure if it makes a difference in mpg but it does run smoother. Also use eco mode when in heavy traffic .

Pretty much as above, long term average is usually 35, 40 on a long motorway run, 45 on a slower steady run and 30+ on short commutes. Mine is a manual, a DSG may not be quite as good from what I've read. Biggest factor though is just driving style, I'm at a more relaxed and steady time of life, if you're a bit more energetic then perhaps not so good!

Oh and welcome to the forum!

Im driving a 2014 Gti PP manual and get an average of 31-35mpg .  Its always is sport mode but i am driving sensibly . Had the car only since Christmas eve but covered 800 miles.  This is not the mpg i had expected but perhaps if i ucse eco mode thet will be better .
Last car was 2012 Golf R doing 28mpg

Hi and welcome I have a manual 2016 gti non PP as above I average 34 - 39 mostly town driving and of course a cpl spirited drives " well its a gti after all " its all about the grin  factor not so much the mpg.
U can drive modestly and get 40+ but I personally didn't buy a performance car to worry bout fuel returns lol

MPG is dependent on so many things - driving style, how busy and long your commute is, what gearbox you have, what road speeds you are generally on etc.

I average 32mpg in my Golf R manual at the moment, on a 20 mile each way commute with relatively uncluttered roads. I have a heavy right foot to get to my desired speed but drive intelligently to preserve my momentum and minimise braking when i'm there. DSG is 10% thirstier in real world driving. If I was stuck in inner city traffic with DSG i'd be thinking that 25mpg was a good result.

On my commute i'd expect to get 32mpg in a DSG GTI and 36mpg in a manual one.

If mpg is of huge concern to you and you want more that 35mpg without driving like a nun, you are looking at the wrong car - a GTD with a tuning box would be the better car to have (240ps, 500Nm, 50mpg). The GTD manual clutch is very resilient, the GTI and R clutches are not.

Hi all thanks for the warm welcome, I know the gti is a drivers car and I perhaps shouldn't worry so much about the mpg, I've driven both the gti and gtd but find road tests are never quite long enough to get a true representation of mpg etc... gtd drives well but not as well as the gti, so everyone seems to be around mid to late 30s mpg what range will a gti do to a tank? anymore opinions or inputs will still be greatly appreciated

How many miles a month/year are you doing? The difference between 30mpg and 35mpg over 10000 miles is only £249

If the tank range is important it holds 50 litres (plus a little in the filler neck) so that will give you some idea of potential range using the real world figures of mpg already given.

As above, if you are buying the car to save money on fuel keep the Mini as spending £?000's to save a couple of hundred a year is not good finance. If you just fancy a new car then go for it and don't worry about the economy as it will be similar to the Minji.

I'm doing roughly 12,000-13,000 miles a year?

So Mini Cooper S, same sort of engine and performance (ish) and a slightly lighter car than a Mk7 GTI PP, slightly better MPG.

Not really any surprises there.

I don't know if you were just curious for total cost of ownership calculation or definitely trying to save money.

A manual GTD would give you excellent fuel economy, but so would a Cooper SD if that was your only thing you wanted to sort out.

Oil burners aren't for everyone though, some because of driving patterns, others because they think they don't like derv :)

I wanted to get a GTi but because I do at least 50k miles every year it had to be a GTD and I know it will be more than happy with it.

I'm not looking to buy one  to save money but I don't want to be at the fuel station every day, so I just don't want to be worse off, I drove the gtd and found it just seemed to loose power around 70-80 mph if that makes sense

No not really.

Slightly lower mpg, 25% bigger fuel tank. You will be financially worse off and at the fuel station less.

Well of course unless you are on a German Autobahn this should not be a problem in the UK.

On *ahem* a German Autobahn I can assure you it pulls just dandy up to quite a bit beyond 80mph.

So it doesn't matter if you are in Germany or not ;-)

I've owned an r53 cooper s, r56 cooper s and a r56 JCW.

My mk7 GTI was better on fuel than all of them, even better with DTUK box fitted.

It was better all round car but certainly not as fun!

My long term average after 5000 miles is 35mpg with around 40% city, 40% motorway and 20% countryside.

I'm content with that, I've given up trying to get the best mpg I can as even when I have tried I haven't managed to increase it that much compared to my normal driving style. You just have to enjoy it as unless you're driving a ridiculous number of miles it doesn't make much difference to your pocket.

My car seems to be getting less than the figures quoted here .. I'm at 31-33 mpg . but iv just fitted a pipercross air filter and removed the plastic guard under the filter .. early days yet but mpg seems to be up to 34-36mpg
