THIS IS A VERY COMMON MK4 GOLF/BORA PROBLEM!!! IF YOU HAVENT SUFFERED FROM IT YET THEN IF YOUR WINDOW REG CLIPS HAVENT BEEN REPLACED WITH METAL ONES, YOU WILL AT SOME POINT BE CAUGHT OUT BY THIS BLOODY ANNOYING PROBLEM!!!
ALL THE GOLF/BORA/JETTAS IN THIS SHAPE IN THE USA WERE GIVEN A RECALL AND UPGRADED, PAID FOR BY VW USA, UNFORTUNATELY VW UK, DONT SEE IT A WORTHY RECALL AND ARE THERE FOR FLEECING YOU/US THE MK4 DRIVER BY HAVING TO HAVE THEM REPAIR THEM AND AT A SERIOUSLY HIGH COST!!
SO HAVE A LOOK, IF YOUR HANDY WITH A FEW TOOLS YOU CAN DO THIS!!!, ABOUT £30, A TORX DRIVER, A 10MM SPANNER/SOCKET AND A SCREWDRIVER AND YOU CAN UPGRADE YOURS BEFORE THIS HAPPENS!!!
(£30 PER DOOR!!)
, i got me new metal window reg clip kit today to repair the fooked passenger side on me 99 gti, had this repaired by vw at the cost of £195 over 2 years ago and its gone again,me drivers side wen last year and i replaced with metal clips and its been fine, so when i did the passenger side to today i did a few piccies so i could do a step by step how to, as it really is easy and can save you lots of money!!
window regulator clip replace ment...
1) first off you need the part to repair the window thats failed, i will list the part numbers when i find them all!!
2)right, 1st off check to make sure your window hasnt smashed, give the door a shake back and forth if you get a bang bang noise your window is ok.... if you get a broken glass kinda noise, id order a new glass before starting this as youll need it!!
3) open the relevant door....
4)right you need to remove a few screws to get the door panel off, use a flat blade screw driver to prise the cover off the door handle
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window2.jpg)
behind here theres 2 big screws, use a phillips screw driver to remove them.
there is also a smal phillips screw in the top corner near the a post this needs removing too
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window17.jpg)
then there is 3 torx headed screws at the bottom of the door panel remove these
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window3.jpg)
5)Right, now its time to remove the panel, pull it out at the bottom and youll feel some popper studs come undone, now you have to push the panel up to get it to come off, it takes a bit of a shove but it will come, once its come free totally, be carefull as theres wires and things what youll need to disconnect, dont worry about labelling any plugs etc as they wont fit anywhere other than what they come off of, unplug the electric window switch plug, and the green plug that goes to your light on your door, youll also have to un hook the cable from the door panels door relase lever, it just un hooks then you can pull the cable out, you should now have a totally free door panel
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window5.jpg) revealing something like this
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window4.jpg)
6) there is about 10/12 m6 bolts that hold the shiney galvanised panel on to the door its self, remove these, now before you try and loosen the regulating panel disconnect all other plugs, window motor/speaker and so on, also pull the cable holder poppers out of the holes now pull away at the panel from the bottom, the seal will break and it will slump down a bit this is the angle to get it out, on a car that hasnt had any window repairs before you may need to drill out two plastic rivet heads holding the panel to the locking mechanism for the door.these dont need replacing on reassembly so dont worry. now the door panel is loose so to speak push the door release cable and the 'button' shaft along with there grommets through the panel, you should now have enough room to get to the locking mechanism inside the door, unplug the plug and pull that throught the panel along with its gromment also.
7)(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window6.jpg)
theres your glass look hidig in the bottom of the door, the offending broken white clips are also there too!! use a 10mm socket and remove the glass clamps from the glass, and clear any other crap from inside your door.
-
8. now you have your panel removed, take a look as to how the cable set up works.. its quite easy really..
remove the old cables and white pulley unit, youll need to keep and reuse the main cross over cable, undo the motor from the back and remove the old white pully unit and old cables and clips
get your new metal clips and place them on the slides just so you get an idea of what your doing..
place the new white pulley unit in its place, but make sure you leave the cable ties and metal clamp on for the time being....
9) fit your cables etc in the reverse way you removed the old ones, youll understand more when you set about doing it as words and pictures dont really describe it too well!!
once all done should look similar to this^^^^^^^^
now refit you window motor, not to tightly , then remove your cable ties and metal clamp, now tighten the motor on fully.the panel is now ready for fitting to the door, move the glass carriers up the slides till the line up with the 2 access hole, this will make it easier further on...
10) right lift your glass up into the window as though it was fully closed, get a an assistant to hold it in place whilst you fit the panel, feed your door lock cable through, and plug it in, then feed the button shaft and the release cable through also, now put the sliders into the top of your door and refite the panel, but only use 4 bolts for now. not get you assistant to lower the glass, it will then fit snuggly in the glass clamps, using a torx driver clamp them onto the glass
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window14.jpg)
tighten the 4 bolts firmly, then reconnect the plug for your motor, then switch your ignition on and using the drivers side control move the window up and down to confirm its ok and seating correctly.
then fit remainding bolts/plugs etc
(http://hometown.aol.co.uk/TheDubFather2000/window/window16.jpg)
make sure everything is plugged in, then fit your door panel in the reverse way you removed it and bingo job done!!
job done and now i havent got to worry again.....
hope this helps any one thinking of having a go them selves!! these mk4's arent that scarey, get your tools and and get crackin!!

will do some more how to's, i did take a load of pics when i stripped the oe front grill and painted the badge black... but ive wiped em so i cant do it
how to fit hubcentric wheel spacer guide soon
how to upgrade to audi tt brakes guide soon and a few others

-
Great tutorial. I actually had a similar problem with my mk3 16v - one of the wheels had just worn away my only solution was to replace the regulator completely. I regretted allowing the cable to unwind from the centre wheel for about 50 mins as thats how long it took to figure out how to get it back on.
-
brill guide thanks. i am just waiting for mine to go. have got some history in the receipts for the drivers side, but don't know if they were steal or original plastic replacements. i just try not to let the window crash all the way down when i open it, it makes a horrible thunk. that way they might last till the summer and i won't get frozen doing the job. ta
-
Nice one Gaz. I've been reading a few reviews on the mk4's and every owner has mentioned problems with the window regulators.
-
Just ordered the kit from VW as one of mine has gone. Just an update on price as it appears they have gone up, kit now costs £65 + VAT. Same price at GSF, so as far as I'm concerned, might as well get it from VW.
-
Now that I have received the kit I can tell you why it has gone up in price. It all comes ready to fit.......secured to a new backing plate. Just needed to swap over the window motor and speaker. I've taken some pics so will update this guide later on.
-
As I mentioned earlier, the repair kit from VW is now more expensive as it comes already mounted on a new backing plate. This is a later modification state and different part number to the one that Gaz bought and showed you in the guide earlier at item '8'.
Here is what VW now supply you:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/3.jpg)
and here is my removed backing plate:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/2.jpg)
Note: I've left my boken plastic clip on the backing plate, top left corner, so that you can see what happens to them. Look at the difference between them and the stronger metal clips on the new one.
-
So, what Gaz tells you to do in item '8' is now a lot easier. Lets flip the plates over and you'll see what needs to be done:-
Old backing plate:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/4.jpg)
New backing plate:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/5.JPG)
As you can see, the window motor and the speaker need to be swapped over. Window motor is a straight swap. Speaker is riveted so I had to drill out the rivets and I fitted it to the new plate with small screws, nuts and washers that I had in my gash box.
-
And here is the new backing plate fitted to the door. You can probably just make out the screws that I used to secure the speaker:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/6.JPG)
And just for reference, here is the old backing plate prior to removal from the door:-
(http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10478/1.jpg)
Good luck. as Gaz says, if you own a mk4 for any length of time and this mod hasn't been done.....it will need to be! I was unlucky, it broke on my drivers door the day after I bought the car
-
Where do you get the new metal regulators. Is it from any vw dealer or somewhere else
-
VW, GSF and probably Eurocarparts but from what I have seen, all same price so might as well get it from VW.
-
 I have just bought a 2001 X reg 1.8 GTI T 150 bhp for 7000 in jazz blue, 2 door, 52000 miles with full service history, 3 days ago and what a beauty of a car
Just bought the repair kit for my driver's door and it was 28 pounds +vat from VW dealer in Dunstable.
Sooooo easy to fit it took less than a hour all you have to do is to pay attention to what bits you remove and put it back the same way, the instructions that were given on this thread is spot on.
-
I knew mine was going so been telling every one not to touch it so i could do it on a nice leisurely day. So today i take my dad to the dump just about to tell him not to but it was already half way down. Tries doing it up and clunk, NOOOOOOOOOO. Got mine from VW £70 + vat so £80. I was suprised to see my dealer in croydon is open to 5 on a sat instead of 1. Cheers for the guide Gaz was a massive help.
-
Mine went as i left the office this evening.. an hour drive home with the window in the bottom of the door, thank feck it wasnt raining. Pulled the door apart tonight and propped the window closed with some bits of wood wedged to the centre bar in the door. Hope it lasts till saturday, wont be able to repair it properly till then !
-
hi there i seem to have this problem with my drivers side window.
one of the plastic clips have broken and i have in the mean time got the glass holding on one clip.
where can i buy the metal clips from ??
please help :-)
-
I have the manual regulators on mine, yes the crank handles . anyhow just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone's in the same boat in the future.
My Mk4's a 2001 year model and they still have those crap plastic clips fitted to the regulator, to cut a long story short there was no official kit available for the manual winders so VW (couldn't get the from a motor factors) said that'll be £92 sir for the complete carrier  I said "what about the kits with metal clips available for the electric winders", "don't know" they said "theres nothing to say they'll fit so we cant recommend you attempt it", I said "well do you have a kit on the shelf and if so I'll bring the old regulator down and we'll see if the clips are the same".
Well they are all the same (except the actual electric motor drive fitting) so £28 + vat is a lot better than £92 and the fitment's quite straight forward. So if you have manual winders you can still use the motor drive kit for the metal clips rather than get stung for £92 :smug:
-
I turn off my 1.8 t for a short period then it doesnt start for about 20+ mins sometimes and if i get it to bump start the idle is rougher & the revs go up & stays like it for about 10-15 mins drivin at low speed.. can any dubbers help?

You would be better starting this as a new topic rather than tagging it onto the end of a window regulator how to guide.
-
So how do i check if i have crap plastic fittings. Any way with out taken stuff to bits lol. I am a newb when fixing stuff on cars so bare with me lol.
After looking at the images i guess i wont be able to found out. Unless i hear an odd noise.
-
You'd have to rip the door trim off to do a physical check. Not sure if later mk4's come with the modded clips as standard but its a possibilty.
-
Yes i will keep a check on this. I surpose its a cheap thing to fix but an annoying one.
-
go to VW and tell them to do it for free; reading an earlier post your car falls under the 6 year and 90K mark with which VW will fix the window clips for free!
I've had both my front doors done in the last 12 months and mine was 2 years outside the standard warranty!!
-
Well as i have 100 miles untill i have done 90k and its 4.5 years old. I may as well go get it done. What if they start saying its not free. As i am sure they will try it.
-
Unfortunately mine didn't fall under the 6 years/90000 miles stipulation.
No doubt VW will find every reason not to do it

don't let them fob you off!!! do you have a couple of dealers in your area?? I'd phone both to check one of them knows about it. If not contact VW UK direct and pester them until they admit it.
-
Know since ive been in this thread and talking about a problem i dont have. I just drove to tesco and i could here some odd kinda of crackerling noises comming from the driver door.
No is this what happens before the window reg goes??
-
generally yes; i take it you used your window??
-
Not at the time its been raining here. But during the day when in the car both front windows have been down.
-
yeah crunching sound is normally the sound of the clips failing! Get it done to your local stealers and get it fixed!
-
Its an odd noise hard to explain really. Ringing up 2moro and going probley afternoon bloody work gets in the way of it all lol.
-
Well i visited the vw dealaship today and they said they can book me in for it underwarrenty and if its broke it free.
But if its not broke its 58 quid.
Thing is i have 20 miles left untill 90k and this probley really has not happend to me yet. So i am in the sh!t lol.
So i have left it. If worse comes to it i buy the kit of some site and do it me self.
-
just push down on the glass and break it  shouldn't take too much effort if its crunching already.
though a safer way may just be to sit and move the window up and down; it will eventually give way!!
-
Just to let everyone know that you can still get the Window Regulator Repair Kit from the dealer if you request it. It is not necessary to buy the whole panel section for £80.00 when you can still get the repair kit for £32.00.
I got the kit last week and had it fitted to my front passenger door.

Snap (I bought mine on Sat) and another one done (Yesterday) with the asstance of the thread :-) Thanks guys. VW Couldn't confirm if it could be done under warranty as I dont have the service history for the car so ended up doing it myself
-
Just had this happen to my car last week !! Hadn't noticed this thread ..got it done at the stealers but my friend works there an did the job an parts for £110 ..defo might look at changing the clips !
On top of that ..both headlamp bulbs went this week an now my windscreen wipers have stopped working !! Swear i had less go wrong with my MK's 1's than my MK4 !
-
i can't see your pic rich looks like is happening again........
-
Any chance of uploading the pictures again, I can only see white squares with red crosses. Planning to fix mine this weekend so if you could that would be great!
-
i find the weight of the window and the aggresive nature of the windows dropping fully is the main culprit(also attempting to lower windows when frozen!!!)......ive found i never fully lower my windows always leave bout 1" showing and this seems fine!...........try lowering the window fully and listen to the clunk and u can see why over time the flimsy plastic clips would break!!!
-
Pics not working for me and i need help

that will do it but i reckon it will be cheaper from the dealers :undecided:
-
Repair kit from VW dealer is around 30-40 pound just ordered one and i forgot already. Replacement kit is around £80 and they charge £80 pound a hour so its best to roll up your sleaves and give it ago. :undecided:
-
a day after i bought my car, this has happened to my drivers window.
luckily i got it up before it completely went.
any chance of getting the pictures up in this thread, the links to them seem to be gone?

-
blimey them pics were from 5 years ago!! im going to be upgrading both window regulator panels on the mk4 20vt i got in jan later in the spring so ill take pics and re host n post, will buy the parts and upgrade the cables / clips as i did before. its easy really, going to check in the next few days that i havent got the metal clips already!! , hopefully if there plastic ill get them done in a few hours, there worth doing as a bust plastic clip can seriously screw your day, week or holiday because if its going to happen its going to happen at the most pants time!!
will take pics as and when i do it and edit the original posts so they go on that.
:)

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find any of the photos I used too.
I'm sure I will still have them somewhere.

My passenger side window just snapped on Friday night! I had a quick look yesterday thinking it had just came of the runner's then realised the mount had snapped off the regulator? I've been thinking i was needing a new regulator untill i came across this thread, is it just a simple fix by changing the clips to metal ones? Can somone just clear this up for me, as i don't want to be buying a brand new regulator for no reason! Cheers
-
Great instructions in the link posted  I may need to refer back to them later. My regulator went yesterday, Ive stripped down the door already now just waiting to collect the reg kit from GSF after the bank holiday, so I'll have to wait  £29.50 GSF on line price  not too bad I thought! One of my plastic glass clips broke and this meant the cable got chewed up in the cable take up wheel so ive got a little more work than just replacing the glass clips. I knew this was a common problem and was expecting it to happen sometime. Ive done this kind of thing on other cars and it can be complicated, so at least the link posted will help me if i get stuck.
-
my drivers window just collapsed - how bloody annoying - always at the wrong time :(
not looking forward to repairing and for now i'll have to put it in the garage for i don't know how long :(

just to let everyone know this happened to me and i read all through this thread i got the repair kit from GSF £24 plus vat (trade).
kit isnt any way as hard as in the tutiorals it came with all cables and runners all i had to do was drill the 4 rivits holding the rails on to the metal plate and undo the reg the bolt the new one in eazy peazy took me 10min to install so GSF kit FTW!!!
-
Well my Golf managed 13 years before the window dropped, which has happened today.
My girlfriend was using the car at the time, so needless to say I'm holding her personally responsible
