Title: Clubsport S Cup2 Tyres
Post by: Sean G on 08 December 2016, 22:52
Are any of you guys who are intending using the cars now going to change the tyres - at least until the weather is a bit milder and we don't have the risk of snow ice or frost
I've a new set Pilot Super sports here and a new set of Pilot Sport 3's and will probably fit the PS 3's until temperatures rise a bit .  I know still not ideal but I've no real need to fit winters as if it too bad I can use the other car and to be fair we rarely get a bad fall of snow.
I have a set of 18" Nokian winter tyres but would need to buy a set of rims and ideally I want to keep them and if really needed fit them into my wife's GTD.

Tyres don't seem too bad or at least nothing like the tyres on my CSL

Though if I do get some different rubber I'd probably buy a set of wheels to put them on to make the swap easier

I had a set of sport cups 2 on my R last year and tended to stick to the dry days, did a wet track day on them and should have put the super sports on as the slowest two cars were a 4wd R and a GT4.

You can get heat in them but when warn they just hated the wet, issue on the R is it just sends the power back to the rears which are even colder and so its even more lairy

I have a set of Michelin Alpins on my R this winter as i do 25 miles each way across back roads and have to say just loving them

Super sports did cope rather well when I finally had to take the Cup 2s off last year

Personally I'd just get a set of 18" TD Pro Race 1.2s with the super sports and then you get the best of both worlds

I thought that VW didn't supply the appliances to remove the wheels with CS-S ...?

In the cold weather, my Pretoria shod R is running great on Michelin PSS, in the mildly moist, the properly wet and the dry at temps as low as minus 2°C. I'm sure they'll do well for the CSS too.

I was initially thinking of putting some different tyres on, but have been convinced otherwise by others with Cup 2's, including some Clubsport owners.  Generally they don't appear to be too bad in the wet with the Pistonheads video of the car on a wet track day worth a watch.

I will mostly be using mine on dry days though. Think the latest ring record was set at a temp of 8 degrees so they can't be too bad at low temperature.

Well after commuting in the light snow today I've decided to put on some different rubber. It simply doesn't make sense to use low tread expensive tyres in this kind of weather so I've ordered some Yokohama Advan Sport 105's. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'll save my expensive semi slicks for the summer.

I read a trustworthy review of the Cup 2 (actually it was a Pistonheads thread and the chap from Michelin who deals with these tyres was posting), apparently they are much better than the original Cup tyre and work OK on the road above 7 degrees C.

Any 'summer' tyre stops working properly below 7 degree C anyway hence why that's the temp at which winter tyres start to work.

The Cup 2 has around 5mm of tread from new so a new/less worn PSS will work better at displacing water.

Mine have been acceptable so far but when the weather is this cold and icy/slushy/snowy I don't expect any non-winter tyre to work too well.

Oh I completely agree they are far from a disaster, in fact I've been pleasantly surprised by how good they are in the cold and wet. I was expecting them to be horrible. What made me decide is exactly what you point out - the fact that they can't do their thing most of the time due to the cold. The yokohama's are £116 each and the Cup 2's are £230. The Yoko's have 10mm of tread and the Cup 2's have 5mm. It simply doesn't make any sense to use the cup 2 at the time of year when conditions mean that 80% of the time they can't do their thing. May as well stick the Yoko's on, if it does snow they have twice the tread and if it is sunny then they still reasonable enough to have some fun. In may I'll stick the Cup 2's back on til late sept. No point in using up expensive rubber when its not doing its thing anyway. PSS tyres are £175 so quite a premium over the Yoko's.

Going to change the fronts on Thursday to continental contisport 5p, don't like these slick tyres in this wet and most of the roads with a film of mud on them, keep them for summer use or sell them on, may change the backs also but they should be ok.
Did anybody else made the change.

Personally I'd change all four given the differential in performance and operating temps as they are not exactly like for like

I agree, you would be crazy to just change the fronts. On any kind of corner your new tyre at the front will grip and the rears will potentially let go.

Just get a set of 18" wheels and put winter on them, that way you have the right tyres for the 2 halfs of the year. Proper summer tyres for April to September and winter from October to.... whenever.

Putting high performance summer tyres like continue 5's and having cup 2s seem a little too close in design.

If I had one, I'd be taking the original tyres off and keeping them in storage. They are part of the cars provenance. I saw an RS1600i at a show a few years ago, and he had a set of wheels with the original Dunlop D4 tyres just for show purposes. I see the CS S been similar to the RS1600i, so even if you don't plan on keeping the car, you will be doing your bit to help owners down the line who might want to pamper it.

3000 miles already, and every one of them enjoyable I bet. I don't see the point in buying a car like that and not driving it.

Yes. One of the best cars I have ever owned.

I changed to Yokohama 105 tyres. Makes the car more stable but turn in isn't quite as good, quieter and wheel spin is more predictable and less frequent - especially in the cold. Car rides better but doesn't feel as sharp.

The continental tyres are really good, car feels so much better and no wheel spin ,better ride all round as the slicks had reinforced side walls which made the ride a bit harsh. Still running car in,350 miles so far but confidence to give it a bit of gas in the rain has returned.
