Driving to work this morning behind a van and an audi, I am following them for about three miles at under 50mph on a 60mph road and the audi isnt over taking but hasnt left me space...a little further down the road the audi falls back to about 30/40m so the road looks good ahead and pull out get alongside of audi only for the driver to put his foot down and close the gap...ended up having to pass the van too...mad.

Not paying attention then getting pee'd off

Audi driver... simple

I feel your pain being a hgv driver I can guarantee 99% of the time as soon as my right hand indicator cokes on to overtake or even if I'm pulling in I can see the bonnets lift n some a- -e hole puts their foot down to close the gap not much fun when ya trying to keep 44t rolling
-
That goes two ways thou.... the number of times I had to brake harshly because someone in a 44 ton lorry decides to change lanes right in front of me while I was driving 70 (not accelerating) is frustrating (and dangerous).
Now if you then flash these black sheep you get fingers.... but if you pull in front of them and just lift off so you gradually slow down to 50mph mark oh you so get the flashes and horns, even though he has just forced you to slam your brakes on because he was doing 15-20mph less than you were
Back to topic I don't understand either. But keeping reasonable distance to car in front of you is not really enforced in the UK. In Germany they give you fines and points; with regular checks on motorways and even A-roads.

Hey!

Many people do seem to have lost the art of overtaking on normal roads, too many dual carriageways and motorways perhaps. I have noticed that if you do overtake, you get signals (that I am sure are not in the Highway Code) or horns sounded, or as others have mentioned dangerous actions.

I can see the points from both sides iv been doing this job nearly 30 year's I have seen that done many times when a car van coach or even other trucks get pulled out on but i was on about in general but with your point of being pulled out on again 9 out of 10 it's because sum smaller vehicle has forced it's way in front of a truck closing the gap.
Again this discussion wud go round and round but I think the awareness has very much diminished especially from our EU peeps

In my opinion overtaking should be part of the driving test. I'm sure people thinking its illegal and/or dangerous. (its only dangerous if done dangerously)

Or even how to allow others the space to overtake even if you don't wish to.
I tow a caravan, so am limited to 50mph on single carriageways. I've often got a long line of traffic behind me. No doubt I'm been cursed for causing the queue, but more often than not, it's the one or two cars directly behind me that are causing the problems. They are far too close to be able to see clear road ahead to be able to overtake if they want to. If they don't intend to overtake, then they are lengthening the line of traffic for those further back in the line who can see clear road to get past.
If I'm towing and am following a slower vehicle, there's probably not many opportunities for me to be able to overtake, so I'll always hang back, giving those behind the room to pull in front of me if they overtake me.
It's not difficult to comprehend, but so many people have little understanding of considerate driving or spacial awareness. We just need to appreciate that and not get worked up when they do something stupid.

Limited to 50 with a caravan - you must be one of the few then
On the M40 last week - I swear, near Banbury, Trucks in lanes one and two (doing exactly the same speed as each other BTW - yes gtiaps, I'm talking about another little "trick" from your brethren ), Nissan Duke in lane 3 with a Caravan in tow doing over 70mph AND followed by a BMW X5 with a boat trailer right up his boot.
They both stayed in the outside lane doing well over 70 for at least 2-2½ miles before pulling into lane 2 (even though at that point all 3 lanes were clear). Never Police around when you do actually need them.
Now that's the sort of thing we expect from Audi drivers...........(sorry matchboy )

I'm pretty sure that the Juke has a towing limit of 1200kg, so chances are it was overweight and out of control too.
-
Almost certainly the Juke is not up to that job. Most modern caravans are ridiculously heavy. I remember looking at some and deciding my Ford Mondeo estate wasn't capable of (legally) towing nearly all of them.
They must all have granite worktops in the kitchens and lead lining to resist radiation or something.
-
You must have been looking at some fairly hefty vans. We have a Bailey Unicorn Cadiz which weighs under 1500kg loaded. My Passat tows it very well and falls well under the 85% suggested weight match for towing.
-
Transit tows a covered Brian James/racecar combo at 80.
Swapped the diff to drop the revs.

And whats the speed limit for towing any trailer on the motorway or dual carriageway?
-
60, same as the truck.
Wont tell you what we got out of that on the way back from Knockhill dipping the clutch :lipsrsealed:
-
What sort of Audi was it,I'd have thought you'd have the momentum and upper hand to pass him unless he had dropped down a gear in anticipation in which case he's a tool.
I bet he was annoyed though when you carried on past the him and the van.

Not in my work van..lol and because of this closing the space I ended up getting flashed from a car coming toward me, I had the space just but was only planning on passing the Audi a3

Every night without exception, when leaving Scotswood Road to go to the sliproad to the A1 above, there is always some sh!t-head trying to occupy my space from the other lane on the roundabout - Some people expect to run a straight line across 2 lanes of traffic on a roundabout rather than going around it. 50% of the time it is some ditzy tart in a Nissan Juke.
When i'm out in the wife's A1, people look at me in disbelief when I let people in or use my indicators and I get let in far less often than when i'm in my R.

Lol yeah iv had that done to me way way too many times to recall I myself if the vehicle being overtook picks it's skirt up and starts staying level I myself drop back n await a nice downhill stretch or vice versa if a truck has a little more than me and traffic is heavy il ease off so as nor to hold up other vehicle's but then guess who gets the horns lights etc lol.
Maybe my old school driving trains but that's just me lol

Not sure if it's my farts and crackles (DSG with Remus quad exhaust) or just the fact I drive a GTI that attracts all boy racers in corsas or fiestas but every day lately especially during these cold and foggy mornings I get one of these kissing my bum on the road. Don't they see that driving that close is dangerous? If I didn't care that much for my car these lot would be a target for my brake testing. There was a pr@t tonight on my way home which joined the main road behind me to then slow down to leave a gap and then accelerate and brake violently close to my rear then leave the gap and do it again. Obviously 200 m later he left the main road at the first roundabout. I mean, what is the point in driving like that?
Another annoying thing I have noticed in my morning commute to work is people not stopping or slowing down at roundabouts to make sure they can pass. I drive every morning on a short straight road with 3 roundabouts on the way and every time I have to slam my brakes because some just fly through the roundabout without even a sign of braking.
And speaking of overtaking, I have noticed also that a lot of drivers flash you if you overtake them. It's almost like they feel offended if they are overtaken. I am talking here about normal, safe overtaking, not extreme situations. What I have also noticed is that most of the times is the ridiculously slow drivers that flash, example doing 25-30 mph on a 40 or 50 zone. One morning I even got flashed by a truck for overtaking him and he kept flashing me and even speeding up to stick with me. He was lucky I had another car in front but then the road opened up and I left them behind. Well excuse me for living on the same planet as you and for not sitting behind your big rig doing 20 mph and be late at work.
LE: Another thing: what is with some people driving with no lights on especially now with shorter days? Or with just parking lights when it's foggy?
