Hi everyone
Just wondered how many of you were contemplating putting a Paint Protection Film on your pride and joy? And if so what suppliers and Cost ...??
Andrew
-
I had it on my Mk7 Golf R front end (3M)
Wished I hadn't after a trip to Italy in July when the bugs stained it
3M's response was "what does he expect, it protected the paint didn't it?"
It did save some big chips I suppose but I think I'd rather repaint the bumper when the time comes as I had to replace the damaged sections which costs too.
Viper GTS is having his done with Ventureshield...
-
Asked about it but for full wrap it was over £2k. Don't want a part wrap as it gets dirty round the edges. Not gonna pay £2k so it's a no go.
-
Yes, mine is booked in for next Tuesday 29th
No chance
I'm only having the front end done and the leading edges.
Not sure on cost tbh but they use the new gear that self heals. My Woman has it on her M3 and works well. Well no bug marks which I know I've had on previous jobs
-
I got my GT4 done with PPF and protected with gtechniq before pick up - the cost was £3200 I think ... expensive but worth it - it cleans with just a blast from the Jet washer with the gtechniq coating - Here's the GT4 getting done ...

Had my GTI done at Topaz with their self healing PPF. A bit pricey but worth it. After owning my previous 2014 GTI for over 2 years I managed to get a lot of stone chips on the bonet and front bumper so didn't risk the same with my 2016 GTI.

When the film treatment costs more than a corrective respray at the end of your ownership, I can see why not many people go for these films. It's like having a buildings insurance policy that costs more than the rebuild cost of the house. If I could get the bonnet, front wings and front bumper done for £200 then i'd be in, but the prices you see for this treatment are ridiculous IMO.

The problem is that it's difficult finding a decent paintshop coupled with the fact you then own a car that's had paint and will always make the next owner suspicious.
Personally, original paint is best and I'll do anything to maintain it

I would say it depends on how long you intend to keep the car 🚗 I agree with viper that original paint is important on a collectors car but you never get your money back on the PPF come re-sale time - you just make it an added feature for the next owner so really he gets all the benefit. I am in two minds, after all this is not a Ferrari only a humble VW so does it really justify the £££ and will the kind of person buying a Cs-S in 3 years time really be bothered about PPF versus and few stone chips that can easily be blown/touched in ....???!!!!!!
-
Doing track days the chips can be brutal, especially if its wet
For me it would be like walking down the high street with your flies down and your willy hanging out....very exposed

Viper - I like you analogy ... and I do see your point - if I was doing a track day I would take the GT4 Clubsport

Have you had a Mk7 Golf before?!
Had to get my R front bumper done after 300 miles as lacquer looked sand blasted.
Repaint at VW's expense was way more durable.
Might just have been teething problems with the then new Lapiz Blue but I think plastic doesn't get heated cured as much as metal so paint was still soft
-
Had VW before, but not for a long while although I have a MK1 GTI that I've had for 23 years which is a track weapon soon to have 400 horses, about 350 too many
My last track toys were a 997 GT3 RS and an R26R both of which were protected but I only had to look at the windscreens to see the damage that was saved from my paint
-
If you are not doing track days with the car and do not want to pay the amount for PPF what about trying a glass coat.
It's obviously not as good as stone chip protection but will help and helps reduce scratches and general issues. I have had one on mine and been very impressed over the last 2 years especially on a carbon grey car.

James .... what is a glass coat may I ask ...? Andrew
-
Best I can describe is that the car is prepped to ensure the surface is clean, then you apply a single coat or coating system to the car so it acts as a topcoat which is the layer that takes the surface issues.
Topped and washed in the right way can last for 2-3 years
Here is a video of one type of coating and depends where you live to which detailer can do which coating.

Fair point, for a track day car it's a good idea.
I had a look at a Driving Experience R8 the other day, 3000 miles and the only bit of the front end that wasn't PPF protected were the very expensive laser headlamps which were heavily sand blasted
-
Yea ... it's interesting how they don't PPF the headlamps - something to do with MOT I believe ...?

I've always had my headlamps done

Quite possible that it will affect beam focus on the headlight housing, might not quite be as transparent as the casing itself.

Amazing car, awesome colour!

That's got to be one of the best looking cars I've seen in a long time
What the hell are you doing buying a Golf

Thanks for your kind words ... The GT4 is a beautiful car and with the Gards red and Satin black makes a nice combination 😍
I agree the Golf pales into insignificance next to the GT4 but still a great car in its own right and just as collectible - after all there are around 2000 GT4's in the world and only 400 CS-S so will be interesting to see which car holds onto its value better ...???!

All I can say is enjoy them all, especially that beautiful GT4

Clunky plastic headlamp protectors don't seem to affect MOT.
I wonder if heat affects the PPF, the laser lights might be a special case.
-
I had the lights done on my old Pork, it's also on my FGT and there's no issues at all with MOT

Here's a youtube video of Reep actually doing a PPF on the bonnet of a Clubsport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It8fKeanEcw

Only took 52 seconds to install so can't believe they charge so much 😁😂😁

That's what I thought, they do work quite quick though.
-
I think it is a total racket - £2k for a plastic film .... I am sure in time will prices will reducer as demand grows so costs reduce and competition from fitter increases. Dealerships like Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren should really do it in house rather than farm out and lose added sales
-
Not really sure why everyone's bothering, nothing will stop stone chips!

Your money is much like that film made for 17 year old Halfords enthusiasts - "Gone in 60 seconds"!
Way too much money for what it is and how much labour is(n't) involved. I suppose their point of view is that the typical buyer is bringing a £80k+ car in...they can afford it!
-
Got quote for front end PPF and swiisvax polish at £1200 plus vat .... any thoughts ???!
-
Mine is currently in for full frontal inc roof and side prone parts
Not sure on cost but I dare say I'll find out when I collect it
