Hi all,
Last week on a few occasions I heard a whirring, humming coming from my power steering when on full lock doing a slow turn. I've been told it may just need some oil, is this a possibility and if so where do you top it up. If not is it going to be expensive.
Thanks in advance.

Yes. Left of the engine in front of the coolant if I remember correctly.
-
9/10 times you are going to need a new rack
-
Thanks for the info.
Oil level was only just touching tip of dip stick which is well below minimum.
hopefully it won`t get any worse other than a slight whine on the cold mornings approaching

Make sure you put the right fluid in as I have just picked up a mk4 that the owner thought it was ok to just throw brake fluid in
-
For fluid its the green mineral stuff.
Apparently normal fluid or atf fluid will kill the pump off quick
-
If the normal or ATF are bad for the pump, I shudder to think what brake fluid would do.

Not worthe thinking about really is it

No, probably not, but one wonders where the owner gathered enough brain cells to ever get a drivers licence...presuming he ever held one.

Back of a cereal box
I cant quite believe someone would think brake fluid will work

A little ironic actually, I told the wife I needed some oil for the lawn mower a few years ago and she brought back some power steering oil
I new I`d seen some in the shed somewhere
