Hi there, just picked up a 2014 tornado red golf GTD, having owned both a 2011 rising blue scirocco (1.4 122 slow) and after that a 2011 indium grey scirocco (2.0 tdi 170 dsg) which seemed a nice car at the time and much improved from the previous one but this GTD really caught my eye so I had to try it. Enjoyed the test drive and purchased it next day. Didn't think I would like 'downgrading' to a golf but to me everything seems like an upgrade - the interior, the power, the handling, the appearance, the lights, seats, wheels, just absolutely love it. It even has petrol characteristics unlike my previous diesels as it has plenty of power in the higher revs which is nice. I've downgraded in the essence of back to a manual and no DCC but so much better in other ways.

I was originally going for the Gtd but then decided on a new order own spec Gti I threw everything at it part from the PP and tbh I'm loving it.
Wife's car is still the 2.0 Tdi scirocco I still get a buzz when I take it out but the Gti is definitely ny cuppa lol :whistle:

^ The PP is by far the best value for money option on the GTI, if I were getting a GTI it would be top of the list for me. You'll barely notice the extra 10ps, but for the better brakes and the LSD it is a relative bargain amongst the overpriced options to add to an already well equipped car.
The Scirocco still feels a bit less polished than the MK7, and for that it feels quicker like-for-like, my 170TDI Scirocco felt quicker than my MK7 GTD, but it's getting on a bit now and is begging for a new MQB based model.
If I were after a Scirocco replacement right now, i'd probably get a new TT instead.
The Scirocco used to turn heads when I was an early adopter in 2009 but now there are so many cars out there that copied the styling.

Wonder why the Scirocco has been such the poor relation, as it was obviously a good seller, but think its been passed by many cars not least its own brands, so in definite need of the MQB love, though given the transferable tech the next Scirocco could be quite a car.

Scirocco has it routes back to 2003 in terms of the chassis and it shows, I still ask myself why I bought one over a three door tungsten blue Mk5 Pirelli and new one will be at the end of the MQB lifecycle

I'm also changing from a Scirocco to a GTD and I agree the Scirocco needs a good update.

I went from a Rocco to the Gti PP, looks wise I think the Rocco looks better.

Very rarely see new or even new(ish) Siroccos these days. :sad:

Don't like them because of one thing, and that is the tailgate hinges are prominent on the roof line. I think it looks terrible and I could not own one as I would be looking at them daily. When I took one for a test drive a few years ago it was a bit "Meh" as I drove it after driving the GTI, I expected more. :sad:

I'm guessing that the GTi was MK7? The difference between the old and new MBQ platform is huge.

Refinement went up hugely with the MQB platform, but with that and more linear power delivery, I feel they are a bit less fun (they feel slower than they actually are). The Scirocco is long in the tooth now, Scirocco vs MK6 Golf and for me there was no contest (had 2 Sciroccos myself) - the MK6 lost the aggressive front end the MK5 had (bonnet creases and grille, as well as the oversized front and back light clusters).
My Scirocco 170TDI GT was to date the only car i've had where I wasn't thinking about the next one after a year of ownership. Great car when it first came out.

That's a bit like when i compare my old Ibiza 130tdi Sport with my GTD.The GTD is faster but you just don't get the same buzz feeling of torque.It is only when you look at the speedo that you realise how fast you are going.No fun in that. :sad:

The current generation cars are all so well developed that none of them feel as fast as they actually are.
I had to modify my R just to give it some kick. Nor for the extra speed, just for a bit of extra feel as the car catapults forwards.
The only downside of that is to get your kicks you're having to do speeds that aren't really recommended on UK roads.
The cars are just becoming too good.
a faster car isn't always the more fun car.
Such a shame they don't do a GTD 4Motion as that would be a useful bit of kit and with a tuning box its performance and boot up the butt from all that mid-range torque could be great USEABLE fun.
I love Sciroccos still, hinge bumps and all.
The styling quirks just add character.
The only reason I've never had one is my piddly garage wouldn't accommodate the fat derrière or long doors. I'd have to exit Dukes of Hazzard style.
I borrowed a TDI Scirocco when I had my mk7 GTI PP and although not as dynamically sharp in some circumstances the handling of the 'Rocco is still very very good. It's not a night and day difference like a mk4 and mk5 GTI.

Seems VW are set to gradually walk away from diesel.Big commitment to electric and petrol/hybrids announced.Not even an announcement on the facelifted Golfs with regards the diesel engine.Like it is being shunned. :sad:

When the Scirocco first came out, I saw one and had to have it. I had an 18 month old MK5 Golf GT Sport 170TDI that had been clouted by a bus at 2 weeks old and a piss-poor repair had been done on it by my local dealership's VW approved bodyshop. I hated that car and it had to go.
Saw a pewter Grey Scirocco 140TDI in the showroom and bought it. It was a real head turner before all the copycats got in on the design, lots of people craning their neck to look at it. Not sure why the dropped Pewter grey for the dull Indium grey they have now, the Pewter had very noticeable violet hues to it. The 170TDI wasn't out when I got the 140, and I was in such a rush to dump the tainted Golf. The MK6 demos were just coming through and I didn't like the look of them at all compared to the MK5 - the 20% hike in RRP vs the outgoing MK5 prices like-for-like were the MK6's nail in the coffin for me.
I got a 170TDI Scirocco in Rising Blue as soon as I'd had teh 140 long enough to just ify the change and got an exceptionally good p/x price as they were in such high demand on the used forecourt (it was sold within 2 days of me picking up my new one).
I really like the MK3 TT from all angles except the back end, the MK2 has a far nicer and more rounded rear, if I was after a coupe riight now, it would be a TT - but nobody calls a Golf R a hairdresser's car! :grin:
