Title: Going from MK5 to MK7
Post by: Zayd on 04 November 2016, 21:09
Hello all, I've been a long time fan of all things GTI.  I've had a MK4 and presently MK5, which will be giving way to my new MK7 which, I understand has been scheduled for build week 49.  When do you guys think the car will be delivered to the dealership?

Its a 5 door, DSG in Metallic Carbon Grey.  Everything else is standard, but when I say standard, it appears to have almost every option as my current, very well specced GTI.  From reading some posts on here, it seems that VW are giving a lot more options as standard, compared to when the cars first started going on sale three years ago.  I'd hazard a guess, its to entice new customers as the model is midway in its life cycle.

There's a facelift due early next year,I believe production of the current mk7 ceases very soon.
You've got a nice vehicle arriving there,I wish I'd missed out the mk6 and saved a few quid as on reflection I preferred the mk5.Carbon grey, lovely colour.

Zayd: I wouldn't get too hung up on missing out on extra equipment the facelift may have - if the equipment levels do go up, the list price will go up accordingly - VW don't give anything away.

The facelifted Audi S3 gets an extra £1300 worth of equipment but went up by more than that. Similarly, when the GTI and GTD got more equipment, including Nav as standard, the list price went up there too.

You never know, VW's facelift might involve hitting it with the ugly stick - plenty of Seat enthusiasts don't like the facelifted Leon pics.

Hi,
I went from a Mk5 SE TDi 105ps to a Mk7 TDi 150ps Match Blue Motion recently.
The difference between the two cars is simply astounding.

Quieter by 85-90%, fuel consumption up by 10-15mpg, acceleration that pushes you back in the seat, closer mesh gear box, interior finish up by 15%+, and the infotainment system  it is something that wouldn't be out of place in the cockpit of an F16

My only advice would be to have it professionally detailed, its worth every single penny and the two days the process takes.
(Dont let the dealers do anything apart from the PDI and sticking on the plates ie; no drilling)

Finally, finally, finally got a build week allocated - "Your order has been confirmed for production week commencing 05/12/2016."

It's taken 6 weeks from placing the order to getting to this stage

I would double check that it is still carbon grey as I believe that colour was retired from BW45

Still showing as Carbon Grey Metallic on the VW order sheet and it was confirmed several times by the lease company as well as the supplying dealer.  I'm pretty sure if there was a problem with painting the car this colour, I would've been notified by now, to choose something else.

My order was placed in week 39, hence they maybe honouring it as such.

Does it always take that long to get a build week? What is the average length of time and how long after you get a confirmed build date is the build date? The more I'm looking into this the more I'm thinking that my car ordered last week is going to be a facelift.

Think it was something like 5 or 6 weeks or so before I got my build week, but that was 2.5 years ago. I think its been a bit quicker recently...

It will be 6 weeks from the time of order to the closing of the current model being built. I'm getting the feeling I should have waited to get a build week before I started buying bits for it.

I ordered mine in August and got it in October, twelve weeks from memory, the exact dates are on here in a similar post.

You should have specified the bits when you shopped around for your best price, all mine (well those I remembered) came as part of the price package, even rear carpets which I demanded two weeks after collection because the dealer didnt tell me the car came without

Didnt manage to screw a safety triangle out of them to fill the void in the boot lid however.

The VW boot liner I requested is only suitable if you want the floor set at the upper level, its a feeble thing anyway so it now adorns my garage wall (US made WeatherTec being delivered this week).

Should have also added the sill protectors because now they will cost me £55 plus parts to have the dealer retrofit them (and clear the prep work with my detailer well beforehand).

Hope this helps?

The bits I ordered were not dealer parts except for the GTi rear valance to go with the Milltek exhaust and all the other parts are aftermarket.

Ah, I understand.

Are you having a special exhaust instead of the standard VW model and if so wont that invalidate the warrantee?

I fancy fitting a pair of chrome/stainless tail pipes but thats another story!
Title: Re: Going from MK5 to MK7
Post by: GTD22 on 16 November 2016, 18:54
Yes I have bought a Milltek exhaust and not it doesn't affect the warranty at all. For something t invalidate the warranty they(VW) have to prove that it was caused by the modification.

It is like if you put a set of lowered springs and later you had a problem with your engine they would not be able to prove that the problem was caused by the springs.

Sorry, my fault, just a bit worried that I'm going to get a facelift car.

My Golf, well its not quite what you'd expect.
I originally went into the dealers to buy a GTD, and more importantly, paying cash with my own money.
However I drive quite a bit on estate roads and tracks and didn't want low profile tyres or a ground clearance lower than my TDI Mk5.
The salesman eventually guided me off the GTD on to the 150ps Match (only loosing 30ps afterall) when we realised it wasnt possible to upgrade the GTD wheels into tyres with a higher wall and I refused the Tiguan alternative.
So I ended up with a debadged, night blue, black leather, warm bum, super comfy, country trolley!

And only today fitted my specially imported, US made, WeatherTec boot floor cover (lower level).
Im a practical guy so all foot spaces have VW fitted rubber mats, to me fluffy carpets are for bedrooms

If it fails to meet my requirements then I suppose it will have to be the Tiguan, but I have loved Golfs for years and years so wont give it up without a very fair trial.

I just did a 200 mile trip to pick up my new 5 Door DSG GTI in Carbon Grey.  It was a revelation letting the car drive itself home with ACC!  This car is like something from the future, compared to the MK5 I've just sold.

The refinement is very noticable, as well as the fact the boot has also bloody shrunk!  I'm also glad that they didn't wash it, as I don't trust their grit bucket onsite valeters.  The car is covered in road grime from the long journey home from Bradford to London.  I'll be giving the new girl a thorough was, polish and wax tomorrow.

Having spent the last three years at the wheel of mk7's I took out a friend's newly acquired mk5 GTI the other evening.
Just a basic spec 2005 GTI and all the better for it, I'd forgotten what great cars they were and they still look really good too.
It felt like a proper GTI devoid of a lot of the needless gimmicks.
No radar, no silly driving modes and certainly no gesture control.

A driver's car.

Mind you, the ride felt a bit hard. I must be getting old (or the bushes and dampers were worn out).

Very nice, did you not consider waiting until the new plate? I could of had my car a few weeks ago as it is sitting in Grimsby for weeks.

I wasn't too bothered for the new plate to be honest.  I'm truly amazed at how much kit is given free.

I've driven MK3, MK4, MK5 and I've got to say by far this is definitely the best so far. The handling and grip are very assuring and inspiring to push on.  I can feel how taught the chassis is and the steering is quite good for an electric system.  The damping is great and much improved on the MK5/MK6.  I can see how they've improved and refined the DSG box from previous iterations. It has less lag and I'm yet to experience any serious hesitation.  The needle can just about keep up with the rapid gear changes.

And all this critique is coming from someone, who's other car is a 911. (MA)
