Title: 1999 golf mk4 gti 1.8 t
Post by: Azza1234 on 27 October 2016, 11:15
Brought a mk4 golf and the center screen that displays the mpg etc doesn't work the immobiliser kicked in and wouldn't let me start it then suddenly worked and haven't had any problems since the odometer now has stopped working until you turn the engine off then the miles go up is this a common fault? Or any easy fixes?

Where are you in the country?

I would first check that connector is plugged in at the back properly.
If that is all in the speedo might be acting up - which is why I asked where you are. I can help you with either repairing speedo or fitting a replacement, including matching immobiliser etc.

On the back or if you have a diagnostic system you could read it via OBD.
If you have a CAN bus speedo things are much easier - i.e. if it is 1j* 920 *** * it will be CAN. 1j* 919 *** * does not have CAN and they are rare and quite a lot more expensive.

Also went to the petrol station filled up reset the odometer, started driving and said I done 10 miles when I had only just left the petrol station I then noticed the heater dials light went out until I reset the odometer then the lights came on again could this be related to the speedo /immobiliser issue?

Might be a wiring issue. Though it showing 10 miles after a short distance sounds like there is an issue in cluster.

You have a CAN bus speedo - which is a good thing. Do you have a KKL cable and diagnostic software (VCDS lite or wbhdiag)?
Then could send you a spare speedo (it's a diesel on but would work for testing but trying to get a petrol one back that I lent out).

You can with some speedos if you have a kkl cable, but I would go down modding the EEPROM itself.

I should get a loan speedo back this week, could program your mileage into it and send it to you. Might be able to loan a cable.... need to see if I have a spare.

I do have a speedo, my cheap kkl cable does not work anymore.

Think about getting one, e.g.:

This is the speedo in case you are after one.... you can get it off me outside eBay for much less.

Send me a PM - I should be able to loan you a simple KKL cable too.
