I love my R but the other half complains about the harsher ride and road noise compared to the previous GTI on 18" rims (and the benefit of DCC). I currently have Kuhmo's fitted, which came with the car. Do you think a different make of tyre would change the comfort and noise level and if so, which tyre would you recommend?
-
Not too much in it. On 19s the tyres are almost like painted onto wheels....
Maybe try a slightly lower tyre pressure.
-
Most the 225/35/19's I can see are rated at 71 or 72db.
The only ones I can see less are:
GOODYEAR 225/35R19 88Y GOODYR F1 ASY2 XL which are 69db (I doubt 69 vs 71/72 is much of a difference)
DUNLOP 225/35R19 88Y DNLP MAXX GT DSST XL* which are 66db
The latter is definitely a run-flat. I always thought RF's were more noisy.... they certainly will be less confortable ride!
-
I'm running 235/35 R19 Eagle F1 Assymetric 2's and whilst I can't compare them to anything else apart from the Continentals, they aren't overly noisy and definitely not intrusive, even on lowered suspension.

Kumhos came with the R? Was it used? Can't imagine Kumhos coming from the factory. With budget tyres like that i'd expect a harsher ride. The factory fitted Bridgestones were hard on mine but swapping out for Michelin PSS and the ride is a lot nicer. Above 10mph my R on 19s is just as comfy as my MK7 GTD was on 18s (Bridgestone). For me DCC on 19s was not required.
-
Perfectly happy with the ride quality and noise levels with my 19s, mine are Pirellis. Also don't have DCC.
-
Latest Mini GP comes with these 'budget' items.

Same with me - totally happy with the Pirelli P-Zero's on the 19" Santiago's on the GTD. Only marginally more noisy (if at all) and harsher than the 18" Goodyear Asymmetrical units I had on before (with the DCC set at Normal), and miles ahead of the Bridgestone's the first GTD came with.
To be fair though, the "R" has a slightly lower profile (35 as opposed to 40 on the Santiago equipped GTD's and GTI's), so not sure if that makes a difference ?
-
I have Michelin Pilot Super Sports on 19" wheels without DCC.
These were changed from the OEM 18" Cadiz with Bridgestone S001's and I swear the ride difference was negligible and definitely quieter.
-
Thanks for the replies which are very useful. Yes my car was second hand and the Kumhos were fitted by the garage, I'm sure as a cheap alternative. One of the reasons for changing is I very gently scuffed a curb recently at no more than 2mph and it took a big chunk of sidewall out. Think I might go and try Pirellis or Michelins.
-
I'm on 19" Pirelli Zeros on my santis and tbh I'm very happy all round with DCC quiet at speed and superb hold
-
If it's any use, Costco are just launching £50+VAT discount on 4 Michelin tyres.
I run 18s and the price for PS4s was very competitive last time I looked before thinking about this offer.
Can't vouch for their fitters though.
-
As mentioned in a previous thread, i inadvertently ended up with 4 Kuhno Ecstas fitted and they are simply awful. Hard, skittish in the wet and terribly noisy. As soon as i had them changed out for a full set of continentals it was like driving a new car, refind, grippy but most of all quiet.!!
I would never recommend Kuhno.

Pirelli P Zero have arrived on mine and having read more than a few comments to harsher ride on the 19" on the R then stumped up the extra for the DCC.
Was expecting a fall off from the GTD 18" with DCC but not too much
The reality is proving that there has been no noticeable drop off at all, the R is comparable to the ride for GTD, nice and soft in comfort and normal, and firm but again not crashing (as the tech in the dampers are active and are still compensating) on race.
After having once selected S Line suspension and regretted each and every day for 3 years am more sensitive than most to poor ride and for me DCC is money well spent.
Not sure there is an answer for 19" on standard suspension other than putting a good quality tyre on with low noise rating, but its an expensive punt if difference is marginal in reality.
Tyres do make a difference though as wifes Mini on run flats that came with car was awful, but when we changed them to decent budgets the difference was night and day, it was like driving a different car. Pure Luck though as was not expecting improvement
-
^ It all depends what you are coming from - i think that the standard suspension set up of the MK7 and other MQB stablemates (I've been in a Skoda VRS, A3 2.0TDI and S3 from the current ranges, as well as a MK7 GTD and now R) is miles ahead of the last gen VAG cars in terms of comfort. My MK5 GT Sport TDI170 was properly crashy in comparison, and the 2 Scirocco's I had after the MK5 were more comfy than the MK5 due to the standard DCC, but no comfier than a MK7 Golf without it.
I was expecting a harsher ride when swapping out my 18" shod GTD for a 19" shod R, the difference was marginal, and i'd say now that swapping out Bridgestones (RE050) for Michelin PSS, the ride is better than the 18" Bridgestone (S001) shod GTD. I do think that the far smoother ride (and linear delivery of power) is one of the main reasons the MK7 performance Golfs don't feel half as quick as they actually are.

Santiago come with 35 profile - 225/35/19.

I just changed from Bridgestone re50a to Michelin PSS and the ride it's softer than the Bridgestones, noise is similar but grip is better.

Steer clear of these tyres,i had them on my car and the fronts just managed 6,000 miles before they needed changing and the rear needed changing at 3 years old {7500 miles} because they had cracked so badly it was picked up on the first MOT.
Drive and handling are ok just expensive and longevity is rubbish.
-
^ One of the things you have to take into account with tyres - how long do they last and are they good right down to 2mm tread depth? I've found Contis go right off beliw 4mm from past experience, but haven't tried them recently and Michelins have been good rlthroughtout the whole life of the tyre, with reasonable wear rate. Find the same with Dunlops, but my first Scirocco shod in Dunlop had 3 tyres with sidewall bulges during the first winter, no significant pothole impacts and Dunlop would not entertain a QC investigation or claim - never will I buy Dumlop out of my own pocket as replacement!

Not so, my P Zeros are at nearly 13k miles with 4-5 mm left. Perhaps there was another factor in yours going so soon.
-
Thanks for all your responses which have been very useful. I have now decided that I will go and replace with Michelins. The preferred choice is the SS but has anyone fitted the Pilot Sport 3 and if so, is it a superior/inferior tyre?
-
Both are good, had plenty of PS3s in the past, but Costco don't stock them above 18", so I went with the PSS. If the PSS were coming in at more than £30 a corner more than PS3 then i'd buy the PS3 personally.
-
The MPSS are softer than the Bridgestones, road noise is similar.

Thats interesting now you have me wondering the tyres came with the car from new ,the fronts only lasted 6000 miles and the rear cracked all around the tyre wall and we're changed at 7500 miles.
My wife drives the car 99% of the time so it's not being thrashed maybe it's lack of use as it only does short journeys and has only done 10000 miles in just over 3 years.
I replaced the rears for continental as I had them on my MK6 and they were fine.

6k and 7.5k miles is really poor, alignment issues for the fronts, incorrect pressures perhaps? Maybe they had been sitting around in stock somewhere too before fitting. My OH's Lupo is coming up to 14 years old and has only recently gone over 40k miles - she's never worn out her tyres only had one new set which is now cracking up as did the first set so they should last 6+ years.
-
^^alignment and pressure was fine and tyres only slightly older than the car, they do different variations of the p.zero maybe they were different to yours although your spec looks very similar to mine.
My touareg has done 13000 with goodyear tyres fitted and there is still plenty of tread left on them.
-
The CS came with P-Zeros. I'm impressed, sticky in the wet and not much road noise.
I'm a big fan of Continentals which is where I'll be heading when the Pirellis are ready for the bonfire.
-
Just to keep you up to date with this post. Two weeks ago I had four Michelin PS3s fitted and they have now done about 400 miles. The tyres have transformed the car and the wife is happy again. The ride is now smooth and the nervousness felt before has gone. For the majority of road surfaces the noise level is considerably quieter and on a par with my old GTI. I will bed them in a little more before trying the limits, but I am now a very happy owner of a Golf R.
-
Glad you are a happy bunny :)
People imagine that tyre choice is something that only really matters when you are trying to get tenths of seconds out of lap times on the track.
Thats definitely not the case - speaking as someone who does tens of thousands of road miles a year for over 30 years (mainly) obeying the speed limits and only ever done 5 laps of a race circuit!
-
I feel like the Michelin tyres are quieter and ride a little softer than the Bridgestones re050a
-
Dorset - how have the tyres settled in now? I'm preparing myself mentally now (car just shy of 14k miles) for the financial shock of 4 new tyres and not sure where to place my money. Happy with my Pirellis but fancy trying something else, Michelin PSS, Goodyear Eagles or Continental 6s at the top of my list.
-
I am extremely happy with the Michelins. Did a run last week of over 120 miles and didn't want the journey to end. It has cured all the pattering I used to get with the Kumhos on our wonderful Dorset roads, and the road noise is greatly reduced. I was thinking about changing my car for the revised model, but I am now going to stick with what I've got. I brought the tyres from Black Circle Tyres which gave me the best price and I discovered the franchise was at my local garage only 3 miles from home.
