On the way to work this morning I got a warning light on dash telling me that my right front dipped headlight bulb has gone. Checked when I parked up and it has indeed gone.
Now then, which bulb do I need to replace it?
Code number?
Can I replace it myself?
Thanks

You need a DS1 xenon bulb www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/replacement-d1s-xenon-hid-bulbs/
To replace it you need to remove the headlight and in order to do that, remover the bumper.

Thanks Dubber.
Bloody hell I've got to remove the bumper to get to headlight!!! Know any good how to guides on the interwebs?
I've got my MOT on Saturday morning and if I don't change the bulb it will fail. Arrgh

Best of luck sorting it HF0, hope it is less hassle than it sounds.
If I ever have this issue, do you need to use a Vag.com to reset or align the headlight, or just to clear the warning light on the dash?

Cheers fella. It's a bummer for sure.
Do most people just take it to the dealers?

Can't remember 100% which one but I'm pretty sure they are either DS2 or DS3 bulbs from when I changed mine...

Hope that helps!

Just checked, they are D3S bulbs.

It seems that it's best you check the bulb type before you order, as Autobulbs and Powerbulbs show different types.
-
My local dealer doesn't charge to fit bulbs. You might want to ask yours...
That probably means that a 60 quid bulb from the internet is 100 quid from them, but...
-
Bumper does not need to come off - you can remove wheel arch lining. Not even the headlight needs to come out.
I would swap both at the same time.
Look here for a guide:

Or alternatively you could take the word of someone who's swapped out the bulbs and actually knows what type of bulbs they are.

Thanks so much for all your help and suggestions. It's what make this forum so good
Get this, just had a call back from my local VW dealer. They said the xenon bulb is covered under warranty so will replace FOC. Result!
Funny as I was just in the process of translating 'itavaltalainen' German pdf self-help guide on how to change a xenon DS3 bulb without taking the bumper off!
Phew

Glad it's under warranty - I suppose that it's different from a normal bulb as the life expectancy of a xenon bulb is so much longer than a halogen one. Wonder if the LED tails/fromt fogs are the same?
-
Surprised they cover under warranty on a car that is at least getting near the 3 year old mark..... happy days thou if they do
-
I'm surprised they'd do anything under warranty for a blown bulb!
But nice to see someone is winning on the warranty claim front!
-
Yes I do feel like I'm winning (for once).
It's booked into my local VW dealer to be fixed under warranty this coming Friday. Still pinching myself. But won't look a gift horse in the mouth.
It's my MOT next day too. Double win (as it would have failed otherwise)!!
Thanks again for all you help and guidance. Invaluable.

I had a bi-xenon go on my Polo and was done under warranty, ironically they put it in and the other side blew so both done
-
I've always changed bulbs in pairs after a mk4 I had kept blowing a tail light. Once the pair were changed it didn't blow them again.
-
Just as an aside, my xenon keeps going on and off (3-4 mins on),then a few seconds off (low beam). No dash warnings. Could it be a faulty bulb or the ignitor? Any ideas!!

Similar to how mine started it then got worse

This just started happening to my passenger side bulb. My warranty was up start of November. Guess I'm going to have to fit the bill for this one.
