My PP GTI will be 3 years old in November, and VW have just emailed me to remind me that it will be coming out of warranty and asking if I'd like to extend it.
This came as a bit of a surprise because I thought I'd bought at least 1 year's extra warranty when I bought the car, but I can't see anything on any paperwork to back that up so I guess I've just been imagining that for 3 years
Is the extended warranty a good choice? Does having extra manufacturer warranty increase the resale/trade in price for the car enough to justify it?
Any advice would be useful - this is the first car I've had from new, so it's the first time I've had to make the decision.
Thanks all!

How much have they quoted you? When I had my mk6 Gti I took the extended warranty it was around £300 I think and I'm sure it included breakdown cover.I for one will be taking it out when the time comes as these things are expensive to repair.
It would be more attractive to a potential private buyer having a VW warranty for a few months at least.

This is just via an online calculator, so I guess the numbers are the same that anyone would get at the same mileage.
Named component cover, <15k/year, £100 excess = £303.72 annual.
I think we'll keep the car for another year at least, and it seems very plausible that if something goes wrong it'll cost more than £400 to fix, so I'm swinging towards taking it.

I'm sure that the warranty I had did not have any excess,it just worked much the same as the warranty you get from new.

Just buying a new VW and was offered an extra 2 years VW warranty for £495 (no excess). Since I now tend to keep my cars for about 5 years seemed a reasonable deal. Warranty prices will keep going up.

I'm in the same position as you, my PP GTI is 3 years old next month.
I've not had any contact from VW though.
Looking through previous warranty work receipts for the car the last owner had to get a partial engine rebuild done when the car was 1.5 years old 12k miles ago, I dread to think what that would've cost without warranty.
So I think I'll be renewing the warranty for another 2 years.

When my Mark 6 was coming up to three years old, I didn't have any contact either. I was told that they didn't get in touch because I'd ticked the "no marketing" option on a form somewhere.

Make sure you find our if there are any exclusions with the warranty. When I bought my car I could either spec it with 5year factory warranty which gives the same cover as the standard 3 year one. Or I could choose an extended warranty once the standard 3 year one was up but this didn't cover as much.

I purchased the factory warranty for an extra two years when I bought . It was good value and peace of mind as I will be keeping the car for five years .

Yeah, I thought I had, too.
Looking back on it now I'm actually surprised how little paperwork there is confirming exactly what I purchased from the VW dealer - I can't actually confirm whether I did pay for the extended warranty at the time of purchase or not. VW's records obviously say not.
The T&Cs for the extended warranty are here for anyone who's interested : https://insurewithvolkswagen.co.uk/library/pdf/28684_VW_Extended_Warranty_Policy_NAV.pdf
They don't seem too evil, though they do have the usual exclusions and limitations you'd expect.

The factory extended warranty shows on your order confirmation form as: EA9 5yrs 90k extended warranty.
