I think my gearbox is on its way out. Mr Brokevw reckons its something requiring a rebuild but there is only one gearbox specialist on the Isle of Man and he is expensive. This leaves me looking for a new box, im currently running a 2.0 8v block with an AUG. Ive had a look in my local breakers and he has a mk3 8v gti with a DFQ. So what do i need to make it work? Is it just a 16v clutch kit? Im aware that 3rd to 5th is a tad longer. Cheers

you could get away with just a mk3 gti clutch centre plate. how much for the rebuild on iom?

Whats the issue with current box?
-
I take you have the 8v box. From a mk2.
What is the actual issue with it?
If going mk3, as already said you need the centre plate so that the input shaft will match up with the splines and go on. Although the 1.8 8v has 3 different clutches so yours could be the right centre already

Im lead to belive something in the range of 1500 as the repair man has to take the box out the car.
Cost of getting a box over here is a minimum 50 quid plus shipping to lancaster. Or if i go away to pick it up, 250 quid plus time/fuel
Couple of videos of the noise, happens in a straight line. Gets worse going round one direction of corner, better the other way (cant remeber which). Ive changed the front wheel bearing on the loaded up side when noisy. In these vids the only thing i did to make the noise more noticable is dip the clutch to reduce exhaust noise. Also The speed/pitch of the noise changes with the wheel speed which made me think, wheel bearing/driveshaft/worse.

Thrust bearing on the clutch?

about £500 is the going rate for a rebuild. and the boxes take about an hour to remove. so that would make it £500 an hour labour . have you checked the gear oil level? also the driveshaft cv joints?

Are you not very good with the spanners? Could you not take the box out and attempt to fix it yourself? When I took the box out of mine yes I was slightly nervous I'd f**k it up, but with the help of Mr BrokeVW (the guy is a legend!..) and the guide on his site, I did a fifth gear conversion, slapped it all back together, and it is still running as sweet as.
-
you don't have to remove the box for the 5th gear conversion. if you take off the front engine mount, you can lower the whole lot down enough to get the 5th gear housing off.

.......changed the clutch and push rod bearing too so took box off ;-)

So, mk3 gearbox is in. I tried shifting through the gears but 1st to 2nd doesnt seem to be in a straight line and i can easily engage reverse without pushing down and left. The gearlever in neutral and all of the gears seem to be too far right. Do i need a different shift rod or is it a case of aligning it up?
The chap who deals with transmissions over here is an arsehole from what i've heard. He aint getting squat from me! This mk3 box came up cheap so it seems like a bit of a no brainer.

Just need to align the linkage properly. Put it in reverse. Then loosen the 2 thirteens and then get a mate to put reverse where it should be and tighten the 2 13s up again.
Test it and maybe adjust up again. Had to do mine a few months back. Took a few atemps without the lock tool on the selector
