Title: Golf R and Clubsport to close for ordering
Post by: evo1986 on 08 October 2016, 21:49
By the middle of next week at the latest the current Golf R and Clubsport will be removed from ordering.

Volkswagen have enough orders in the bank for these two models to fulfil the factory quota until the facelift next year.

So if you want to get one ordered I would urge doing it probably by Monday/Tuesday at the latest.

Can someone please share on the Rforum

Regards,

Lee Evans

Presumably this is to run out the 300ps R unit and bring in the 310ps unit and 7 speed DSG box on the facelift?

Lee - obviously the R will appear again as a facelifted model, but will the Clubsport?  Thanks.

The ClubSport was only ever marketed as a 'limited production run' so I'd hope not.

What VW might do is give the FL GTI a boost to try and restore some sales credibility for the model so possibly the detuned Cupra/ed40 engine (265bhp) might make it into the regular GTI, or the PP might get a hike using the existing engine retuned for maybe 240 or 250bhp keeping torque levels more or less where they are now to preserve traction and (manual) clutch life. Pure speculation on my part.
I'd guess the new GTI nose will be half way between what it is now and the ClubSport - so the funny CS sideburns will continue as per several of the Worthersee specials but in a toned down form.

Yes, I'd expect something like that.
The hints have been there for a while with both mk7 and mk6

Going back as far as

Much nicer than the muttonchops CS style IMHO

Agreed, I sold my R last week as I have a Clubsport on order.  They may not be the all round package an R is, but they are very special in my eyes and as you say, they are going to be rare, which the R is certainly not.  And I've got to keep my record going as I've had all the GTI anniversary models - 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th!

what is the current delivery timescale for a clubsport order if one placed soon ?

My local dealer said he expected ordering to go into next year but that might be out of date info now..

We placed an order 2 weeks ago for a customer and it is week 50 currently so I would expect an order now to arrive by March.

evo, do you know that the current lead time is on standard GTIs? I was given an SLI number on Friday but it isn't showing up on the tracker as yet. Wondering if they are more than likely to be BW45 or later.

If it's not showing on the tracker page then it's only just been ordered then so will most definitely be built after BW45. If it's one of the crazy lease deals then expect delivery early next year.

Can't quite put my finger on the reason, but that's looking a little less aggressive to me than the current model, somehow looks less angry.

Today is my 1 year  ordering anniversary.

Might call VWFS and make a withdrawl from the interest on the deposit.

Picked mine up on Friday, ordered 5th April.

Long wait, but well well worth it.

To be honest, I hope they do a Mk8 Clubsport as separate model in future, it feels more special to me than a regular GTi or R, and glad we went that way.

Yours must be one of the first Dave.
Forgive me, but I seem to have missed the ten page thread on your thoughts and all those lovely photos you took...

Will be interesting how many there are made, the fact it is not the all round packages is why it appeals.

I think like the Ed35 it took me some time to get the Clubsport was about

I get the ClubSport, and it does look like a proper special edition, and as owners delight in telling us - it has special front discs and 'improved handling'. It can also be specced with a sunroof and rear doors which will negate all handling and weight saving benefits! Not that i'm cynical or anything.
The ClubSport has given the GTI a much needed boost.

As for the ED35, five years on I still don't get that one. A real half arsed effort by VW.

I have to sa ythe 35 was a cracker, i actually regret that one going, trick they missed was the ROW spec 35 seats

Funnily enough we are going out to dinner tonight in our old Pirelli as a friend has it and that car still tugs at the emotions

The club sport S picks from TG from above make that car looks sport on

Just caught an old episode of 5th Gear this afternoon and it featured a white Edition 35 which I for one thought looked superb!
I'd happily own one

I'd have to agree, my ed35 was a fantastic car and a very worthy upgrade from my ed30

Having the alcantara '35' seats would have finished it off fantastically and made it even harder to part with!

Doesn't the end of the CS show you that it was just a run out like any other "special edition"?

As for the R, I'd guess you are about to see a facelifted one with 302BHP and a 7 speed DSG... I don't think they will bin the R, I see more Mk7 R's than any other type of Mk7.

Yes, closed last Wednesday for factory orders.

As said I really hope they do go for a Clubsport in future generations, as the regular GTi now seems a bit too tame after moving to the CS, but still subtle enough for everyday use.

The comms surely didn't get read by all the dealers..  my local dealer emailed me today to say they are expecting their first car soon and probably demoing it.. and that they still have build slots available to order !

Clearly this isn't the case - I have emailed him to double check and ask if any of the cars are spec amendable or not.  I guess they will have a few coming through although it sounds like they aren't actually customer orders..

Oh well if they don't have a home it might be a blessing and possible to pick up a good spec car at a good price.

That said with PP GTi's on the market for £16k now I am also wondering if that is a bit of a bargain !
