Hi,
Having some trouble getting the car to go in a straight line, I've taken it for tracking and they've told me I have the incorrect wishbone on the N/S/F of car, as its leaning in at the bottom
https://imgur.com/oBE5gPc
Last weekend I bought another wishbone to put on, and it was exactly the same. I got the part from euro car parts so figured they may have the incorrect info on their systems, I called VW and they haven't got any info on ther systems for a wishbone for this car*
(*for those that don't know, I converted this car from 2lt 8v auto to 2lt 16v manual, using whole GTi donor car)
The parts guy told me as far as he could remember, the 16v GTi andVR6 wishbones were the same, and the only different ones were for the lower models, he also gave me a number for VW Heritage, and they advised the same!
So, it's looking like i HAVE the correct wishbone for my car, but it still seems to kick in at the bottom, the guy managed to track it up, but it's still not great, still pulls to the left
Is the subframe any different on the Cabrio and GTi?
-
Did you swap subframe, maybe hes a little off to the left.
Theres a touch of play on them.
Also have you gone to a diff place for tracking. See there oppinion
-
I didn't swap it no
I probably really should of thinking about it, might be worth measuring the difference really, seeing as the Gti has a wider track than the standard car..
-
Saying that though, the 'standard' subframe hag a AGG bolted to it...the engine they used for a 8v Gti...so WOULD it any different..be interested if someone could measure for me, a 16v subframe...ball joint to ball joint, as that's where it's kicking in at the bottom.
Thanks in advance
-
Id have thought the subframe is the same throughout. The widetrack is in the wishbones.
Is the subframe square?
Maybe thats the issue and its kicking the alignment out because of it.
Another thought on it wandering are the front tyres different makes amd tread patterns
-
It was ok before I started the conversion...don't think I even unbolted the subframe to do anything, apart from change the anti roll bar, but that's only loosening off and placing the bar in

your camber is not set up correctly.
Once you undid the 2 bolts at the bottom of each strut it went out.
Once you alter that your tracking changes as well.
Garage should have known that.

Done!!! Excellent advice!
Now goes in a straight line and the wheel looks 100% better!! I must of been lucky with the o/s then as its bang on!
Thanks

It's going to be stunning though so worth the wait

Glad someone is getting use from my ramblings! It takes time doesn't it, I'm a year behind on mine, but I really don't care lol, it will be perfect when done.
Good luck with yours, I will take a look at your project thread if you have one
