Hi all! I'm new to this, so be gentle!
I have a 1990 mk2 16v which has a cutting out fault I can't get to the bottom of.
It will start up fine and run great. I'll take it out and quite often return no problem (with a big smile on my face!) But other times, usually after it's warmed up it will just completely cut out. The rev counter drops to zero and the ignition lights stay on. The car will not re start. It turns over but does not fire. After some amount of time (30-60 mins) it will fire and run as if nothing happened. Quite often I can get it home, but it will usually cut out again. I have replaced the following: Plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap, ignition module.
Your thoughts and any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm at my wits end!! Cheers

Fuel pump relay?
Is there any pattern to it cutting out at all

I had a similar issue with my 8v, turned out to be a dodgy wire that ran from the connector in the back of the boot to the underside fuel pump. Replaced the small section of loom and it's been right as ever since.

Rev counter immediately dropping to zero indicates a lack of sparks.
Cutting out when warmed up, then working again when cooler points to a heat related problem.
I'd suggest the hall sender on the distributor.
To check if it's a fuel-related fault, carry some Easy Start with you and next time it happens try injecting some into the air intake to see if it will run on that.

Bosch distributor? If so they have a habit of intermittent faults.
