It's just a standard USB port.
You can plug your phone cable right into it.

USB to Lightning cables - genuine Apple ones get from Apple Store.  Lots of third party ones but be careful, quite often they don't all transfer audio data, on,y good for charging, can be a false economy.  It's one thing I never scrimp on, I always buy genuine apple cables.

Very true this. Apple's prices make looking at unbranded stuff very appealing but I've done this in the past and just wasted money on a cheap cable as I ended up having to buy a proper one anyway. I bought a cheap cable for work that I could plug into my PC to charge my phone and it doesn't work (it only works if plugged into a mains charger).

That said the cables in the mid-range are mostly probably ok, just the super cheap ones that are a waste.

Amazon basics Lightning cables are superb.
A 10cm one is about £6.00, a 6ft about £6.50

If you haven't got a USB slot then you will need a bespoke cable to connect to the car. If your car was built after June 2015 then you will have a USB slot.

+1 for Amazon Basics. Seem very reliable cables, in a sea of Oriental crap.

As said, though, if your car is MY 2015, or earlier, you will need a VW media cable.and they're not cheap.
